2018 Pick Watch (Philly, LAL 1 or 6-30, etc)

Post#1 » by HartfordWhalers » Thu May 18, 2017 2:43 pm

New thread. 2018 picks in play

2018 Philly 1st (unprotected)
2018 LAL 1st (unprotected) If 1 or 6-30
2018 Philly 2nd
2018 Best of Brooklyn and Cleveland 2nd
2018 Best of New York and LA Clippers 2nd

Also in play, the year the OKC pick will trigger as a one time event. The OKC 1st becomes definitely in 2020 if OKC finishes in the playoffs picks 15-30.

2020 first round draft pick from Oklahoma City
Two years after Oklahoma City conveys a 1st round pick to Utah, Oklahoma City will convey its 1st round pick to Philadelphia protected for selections 1-20 in 2020, 1-20 in 2021 and 1-20 in 2022; in any year, if this pick is not conveyed because it falls within its protected range, then Oklahoma City will instead convey its 2022 2nd round pick and 2023 2nd round pick to Philadelphia (i.e., the 1st round pick will not roll over to the following year due to protection)

Does OKC owe a 2018 lotto protected 1st to Utah? And I wonder if owing these picks will sway Presti's thinking at all if he has a hard time extending Westbrook? Could they just throw it all away and start from scratch and tank, knowing that they save themselves from conveying picks?

As for the Lakers, those weasels managed to get the number 2 pick... for the 3rd year in a row. It will be very rewarding to finally cash in that top 10 pick.

I think it's relevant to also add Sacramento and Philly 2019 (unprotected) and 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Knicks second round picks, several likely to be top-40.

At some point, BC needs to package some of these second-round picks to move up in the draft.

Man, that Lakers pick next year will be nice. If we're lucky, another top 3 pick.
Truth is on the side of the oppressed.

Apparently the Lakers are going to wait to sign Paul George rather than trade for him

May just be a negotiating ploy with the pacers.

Clippers could perhaps blow it up (New York will be New York either way). Also Brooklyn will suck again, so those are some potentially tasty 2nds.

No, the fact that the Pacers can't sign him to the DVPE anymore seals it.

Yes, but if they hold on to him, and he makes All-NBA next year, then he would be eligible for the DPVE at that point.

I could see Indy just riding it out, making the playoffs as a one and done again, and then just offering the max they can offer and hope against hope he stays.

Never mind to this... OKC will almost certainly offer the DPVE to Westbrook now that he's eligible. And no way he turns that down. Hopefully this means the Sixers actually get a 1st from OKC in 2020.

I heard a recent interview where Magic said that he believes the major free agents this offseason will resign so he is looking forward to having enough cap room in 2018 to sign two major free agents.

We need a Sac '19 pick thread, whether it's merged with this one, or its own separate one. Never too early to follow the developments (like what they do with #3 and #5 in a month)

I want to know if Bamba or Ayton can play the 4. That changes everything if so. Bamba has a 7'8 wingspan and is advertised as a pretty fluid athlete with a smooth stroke, like Ayton. Have a whole year to scout

I feel like Ayton could be a special offensive player. Not sure about Bamba's range yet

Ayton has Jahlil's post moves and Embiid's range

Porter, Ayton, Bamba, Doncic

Let's hope Lakers fall into position 1-4

After several years in a row of disappointing big man prospects, I'm not counting on either of those guys until they go through a college season.

I think this is huge because if that is the case then they are basically going into next season with the same squad + the new draft pick, but without lou Williams

If that is the case I think they are legitimately in the running for the worst overall record. At best they will be in the bottom 5 IMO

Now that they've got their picks (2017 and 2019) there's no basketball reason for them to use the upcoming season for anything more than player development.

Practically speaking, they could cut Young (that's not going to give them more wins and part of his $5.6 mil will remain on the payroll), they could trade Brewer to a contender for a second-round pick (but will have to take something back payroll wise). Clarkson has some value at $11.5 mil. Deng can't be moved. Mozgov can be moved (but only to the Sixers).

They need three roster spots for the 2, 28 and 33 picks. And they need to give all three playing time.

So, (1) 2, (2) 28, (3) 33, (4) Ingrim, (5) Russell, (6) Nance, (7) Zubac, (8) Randle, (9) Clarkson, (10) Black, (11) Deng, (12) Mozgov.

Counting Young and Brewer, they're at $81.5 mil. In June 2018, they'll be at $47.5 mil not counting this year's haul - and have to commit to Randle or let him go.

I don't see them going out of their way to win games. We are in the East and have nothing to do with their future playoff prospects.
