You can announce prior, but all GM's involved need to PM me the deal.

How are trades that involve this years draft picks being completed on July 1st? That literally makes no sense whatsoever.

Basically the original team makes the pick on the other team's behalf. Happens all the time.

Maybe the verbiage should be updated when the picks are made (naming the picks). This will ensure that the "completed on July 1" makes sense.

No it doesn't and AFAIK it's actually illegal.

What you're probably referring to are draft night trades where teams make picks for one another but swap instantly (for example Phoenix at 4 drafts who Sac wants and then trades it to Sac for whatever was discussed). That trade is completed on draft night, not on July 1st. It would be illegal for both teams to do that if SAC is giving some sort of compensation that cannot be traded until July 1st.

Could be. I'm not completely sure how the CBA defines these type of deals.

It is completely legal. It happened at least 3 times last season - the Hill/Teague/12 three way, the Bellinelli/22, and the Thad/20 trade. See article below, dated June 23. All those trades show as completed July 7 on bball reference.

I stand corrected. Good to know. Thanks Aramada.

Very perplexed at how that's not considered illegal because you're basically discussing future compensation for a current move (ie. I give you a draft pick now, you give me something later because you don't have it). When it comes to player contracts, that sort of stuff is 100% off limits... why not for other moves?

hey sports,

On trade #24 it was a three way with the Grizzlies as Wade Baldwin IV was traded to Indiana and the Grizzlies got back Demetrius Jackson in return.

I did sent a PM confirmation earlier today just in case.
