I think there's a good chance Danny and staff have their own opinions that don't just track with consensus media opinion. It'll be interesting to see what happens!

Based off of Danny's interview that we need a scorer and shot creator/maker I think it's safe to say unless he was using misdirection that we're looking at Fultz at #1.

Danny has plenty of experience with the art of misdirection.
Was that interview talking specifically about the draft, or did the conversation include potential FA signings?

Good blurb on Fultz for those interested:

7) Let’s talk more about Markelle Fultz. It’s possible that his efficiency numbers be explained by the fact that he’s 18 years old. That’s the first thing. Secondly, his ability to get shots up has actually been better in conference.

In conference play, Fultz is up to 23.8 True Shooting Attempts per 40, with no notable decrease in his ability to make shots from any range. 48% From Two. 38% From Three. When we consider that Fultz’s lack of quality teammates provides him with less than ideal space to create for himself, these numbers are perhaps even more impressive. (Fultz’s teammates also arguably make it more difficult for him to wrack up assist numbers, since these teammates likely aren’t great at converting such opportunities.)

That 23.8 number would place him smack dab in between Carmelo Anthony/Kevin Durant and Allen Iverson, in terms of ability to get up shots as a Freshman. Seasons and partial seasons like this don’t happen often for players this young.

Basically, it’s difficult to imagine Fultz not being very good on offense. A +4.5 to +6 OBPM peak would be a fairly reasonable (and somewhat conservative) guess. In the scenario that Fultz commits to playing defense and can add value there (he’s definitely athletic enough to do so) it’s difficult not to imagine him as a Top 10 player. It’s only that I have questions about his in-game intensity, competitiveness and desire to play defense that keeps me from making Fultz the clear cut number one.

Being excellent on defense is a lot about the desire to be excellent there.

Why would he need misdirection with the number one pick? If he doesn't take Fuktz at one, Philly will jump for joy and grab
him before the clock starts. Should be reason enough to take him.

Yeah, it's Fultz.

I like Ball, I like Jackson. Don't forget the 1994 draft went Glenn Robinson, Kidd, Grant Hill.

But it's Fultz, post lottery buzz means it's him unequivocally.

Tatum, Giles, Collins, Monk, Isaac are all appealing if we go after a second lotto pick or a late 1st. I won't shut up about Giles, personally, until we hear his knees are busted for good.

I was decently high on Jackson until I read this article a few months ago:

http://www.deepishthoughts.com/kaisers-draft-notes-josh-jackson/

It's a very strong argument against Jackson, one I struggled to come up with a counter too. Personally, I think the guy is closer to the level of Jaylen Brown than he is Fultz.

For those interested, the article heavily referenced Pierce and detailed quantitatively on why he was an absolute stud.

Jon Givony just said that Fultz was 6'6 in a recent podcast. How in the hell is that small?

If Fultz actually grew to 6'6"..holy crap!

I'm too giddy..

According to google, his wingspan is up to 7'. I can't find their source, but if he's 6'6" with a 7` wingspan, and possibly still growing - "holy ****" is exactly my thought as well.

I've been watching the "My Life" videos and he comes across like a gym rat, which is to be taken with a grain of salt, but he seems to have improved at a rapid rate over the last 4 years. As a sophomore he was relegated to the JV team, and I believe he was 18th in the country as a Junior.

Here's a breakdown of his play on the U-18 team for those interested. http://www.sbnation.com/college-basketball/2016/7/27/12285436/markelle-fultz-nba-draft-2017-fiba-americas-u18

In theory, that makes senses 6'3.5 with a 6'9.5 wingspan a year+ ago. If hes 6'6, a 7'0 wingspan makes sense.

It also gets me as excited as I've ever been for a Celtics prospect.

So does anyone think IT will demand they trade the pick for a star? If so what do you think will happen?

Also what if Hayward says "I'll sign but you need to trade the pick for a star" what happens with that scenario?

No, as long as IT gets paid, I don't think he cares. After this series, I doubt he's delusional enough to think we're close.

And if Hayward says that we tell him thanks for hearing our pitch.

He also says that Lonzo would be ahead of Simmons as well. It's the bottom video at the bottom of the page:

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/celtics-will-trade-no-1-draft-pick-second-coming-155025040.html

Jonathan says he's 6'6" in the video. He's currently listed as 6'4" most places... did he grow or did Jonathan misspeak?

Out of curiosity, where do you guys that follow college ball think Jaylen Brown would project in this years draft?

There is a lot to be said for rapid improvement. Embiid was a guy that improved a ton extremely quickly.

Favorite quote from that article:

There's one thing those who have watched Fultz's progression can agree on: there's no obvious pro comparison for his talent. Guards with his vision do not have his size, and guards with his size rarely have his speed.

Yeah, I also really liked this one:
"There's a couple guys I've seen over the years who get better when there's more pressure and more at stake, and he's one of them," BJ Johnson, assistant director of USA Basketball, told SB Nation. "I heard a comment on the bench from one of the players to just put the ball in his hands. When you have that level of respect from a group of kids that can really play, he's in a great situation to be a natural leader."
"Danny Ainge needs to shut the **** up and manage his own team. He was the biggest whiner when he was playing, and I know that because I coached against him."

Yeah not sure if he actually meant that but he would know more than us for sure. He was measured at 6'4"75 in April of 2016 so it would not be shocking if he were to have grown. Either way, there's no doubt he can play the 2 guard

My favorite Fultz highlight vid that I've seen. He's just so gifted offensively. Our offense will be massively improved next year. Now, if we can get somebody to rebound, too ...

Damn kid can score anywhere and he's ambidextrous too. :o

I actually think kid can score 15+ ppg in early as 1st season as long as he's at least playing 6th man at best.

Return to Boston Celtics
