Best offers for Klay

Post#1 » by jbent87 » Tue May 23, 2017 1:54 pm

So I was going to post this on the Sixers forum but figured it made more sense here if GSW opens up a bidding war for Klay which seems necessary after inevitably giving upward of $40M/year maxes to Curry and Durant this offseason. I've discussed this avenue with a friend over the last couple months but this Sixers blog dug into it today: http://thesixersense.com/2017/05/23/philadelphia-76ers-financial-times-klay-thompson-golden-states-gilded-cage/

Assuming Danny Ainge isn't offering up Fultz (1) for Klay and Lakers are head over heels for Lonzo (2), Sixers are up next at pick 3 as far as best available draft pick compensation.

PHI sends:
3rd overall pick 2017
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (2017 $ $1,386,600)
Richaun Holmes (2017 $ $1,014,000)
2nd round pick – Knicks (36th overall)
2nd round pick – Mavs (39th)
2nd round pick – Heat (46th)
2nd round pick – Hawks (50th)

GSW sends:
Klay Thompson

This offer may seem light, but after reading the link above and considering GSW cap situation this makes sense if they want to avoid luxury tax hell. They can pay their "studs" and add 3 contributing players who can help them continue to win now (3rd overall, TLC, Holmes) while not making much $. The 2nd rd picks can be used to fill out the roster if need be with guys also making pennies. Maybe they can convince JJ Reddick to sign on with a championship or bust vet minimum contract too to help replace Klay in the starting lineup.

GSW would surely want some kind of win now piece in any deal involving Klay. You mention Boston who could give up Bradley and/or Crowder in a package. That helps GSW far more than adding Josh Jackson or Fox or whomever, no?

Klay is such an integral part of what we do that I can't see us getting rid of him for tax reasons. Its very valuable to have a guy who's so feared as a microwave that teams dont usually let the man guarding him give any help on defense.

That said, your offer is pretty solid in terms of value in a vacuum. #3 would be Josh Jackson, but the problem there is that we lose shooting by a lot. Jackson is not only a poor long-range shooter, he's also a poor FT shooter. Meaning you are looking at a couple years to recoup value on him. Love Holmes. Not really sure about TLC. The 2nd round picks... they actually carry more weight if we keep Klay instead of dealing him.

Overall though, I'd pass on that offer. It hurts us too much in the now, and there's no reason to deviate from what we're doing until we aren't making the Finals. It's success would really depend on that last line - getting a high quality shooter for extremely cheap, and I dont know that that's realistic.

Why would Steph Curry or Kevin Durant want to re-sign with the Warriors when they're trying to win championships now? So you expect them to wait for the draft pick to develop when they're in a win now mode. Klay Thompson helps them more even when he's not shooting well with his great defense. Warriors would need win now pieces if they trade Klay and not draft picks only.

Even with Curry and Durant on 35% max deals, GS won't be that far into the luxury tax next season (the rest of their roster would be quite cheap in that scenario). Certainly well below Cleveland's payroll. GS obviously has the revenue to pay small amounts of luxury tax money for a title favorite.

Thompson has two more seasons on his current deal so even if GS is worried about how expensive things get when he's making $30+M/yr they could still comfortably wait until next summer before considering this sort of deal.

If it's a deal with GS Covington almost has to be included imo.

I don't think so. Covington needs to get paid this offseason. GSW is trying to move Klays 18M on the books to free up space. It doesn't behoove them to move Klay and bring back RoCo at the same/slightly less cap number.

Highly, highly unlikely the Warriors deal any of their top 4 guys. And even if they did, it wouldn't be for the 3rd pick in a two-man draft.

Pass.

I have posted this before but...

Fournier + #6

Fournier can take over for Klay in starting lineup and is versatile to play SG and SF. Yes they take a defensive step back, but when needed, Iggy can be re-signed to provide shut down D. Saves team money eventually considering how much more Klay will get paid and sooner (2 years left vs. 4).

With #6 GSW draft Monk or Fox...a guard to learn from Curry and as Curry ages, can slide him to SG. Also makes re-singing Livingston obsolete (frees up some dollars there). GSW can exception sign a vet guard if needed (assuming rookie might need some time).

Fournier is a 35% 3pt shooter (which is effectively league average) and minus defender. He can't "take over" for Klay except in the sense that he'll be physically present on the basketball court instead of Klay. Steph is only 29, it's going to be several years before we even need to start thinking about a succession plan for him. In the mean time, we massively downgrade both our starting SG position and backup PG position (Livingston to McCaw/Monk or Fox). Doesn't make any sense from our perspective unless the goal is to make Orlando better at our expense.

Klay will get max from a desperate team. Some will think he is a 25ppg scorer as a #1. He will be the Allen Houston of this decade.

I wouldn't make an offer. I would just wait for one year and then throw max at him.

Fournier is a 38% career 3P% who has never had the advantage of playing next to a PG like Curry. Succession plan for Curry? Where did I say the rookie would take over? What I said is allow for the versatility for Curry to play SG as he ages.

You do realize in a money ball move of trading Klay, which is what this whole thread is about, GSW will be taking a step back from Klay production and abilities on the court? That is a pill that needs to swallowed before even considering such a trade (or clicking on this thread).

Durant effectively is the Klay replacement, anyways.

Moving Klay would be a very smart long-term move for the Warriors if they can acquire young and future prospects in the deal. It's not like there's any lack of firepower in that lineup with him gone, anyways. That team, without Klay, but with Durant having had a year to get used to the system, is still a challenger for 70+ games in the regular season, and is still the title favorite.

Honestly, Boston could consider any of the deals that have been floated for Butler/George in a trade for Klay. 2018 BKN Pick + Jae Crowder would be good for the Warriors as Andre Iguodala starts to slow down.

If negotiations with Hayward go south, perhaps a sign and trade with GS would compete with an outright signing in Boston? Not sure if you folks would be interested in a Hayward for Klay deal if the goal is to cut costs.

Agreed. There's no rush. Even if you argue that GS probably loses some long-term value dealing Klay with 1 year left rather than 2, aren't the Warriors in a position to be making win-now moves?

Best offers for Klay

Post#19 » by bdpecore » Tue May 23, 2017 7:00 pm

What about Middleton and #17 for Klay?

GSW get a similar player who has a smaller contract ($14.1MM, $13MM) and get a mid-first to make up the difference.

Curry, Livingston
Middleton, McCaw
Durant, Iggy
Green, Looney
Zaza, #17/Davis

Bucks get another star player to pair with Giannis.

Brogdon, Delly
Klay, Snell
Parker, Beasley
Giannis, Telly
Thon, Monroe

TLC and Holmes would be absolutely studs on that Warriors team.

TLC is long, athletic, has a developing three point shot and plays D. He's ideal for the bench.

Holmes plays small ball 5, protects the rim, rebounds and does the dirty work.

They won't move Klay. But that package would be a very smart move. It gives them cheap depth and some shots at second round picks and a shot at a potential all star in Jackson, Fox or Isaac.

Value and fit is good. But GSW won't move Thompson yet.
