No PG at 12 in this draft, what would you do?
so draft night is very unpredictable, but the mocks that I've seen, it's highly unlikely that one of our biggest needs get solved on draft night. and to be clear, our needs are a PG that can push the ball like Ish, but also DEFEND! between Reggie and Ish we are slowing any PG production. so what do you do? who do you take? personally, i take a Center, which is our other big need area. namely a shot blocker with some offensive potential. I would take Jarret Allen, I think he is the missing BigMan piece in our future rotation. he's mobile, good shot blocker has some post moves, but the biggest thing is he looks like he can knock down that Mid-Range shot. plus I think we can find our Point guard next year, either in the mid-round selection like a De'Anthony Melton or packaging and trade up into the lotery. but what are your thought if we can't get a PG, who would you take that's not in most top 10's?

Frank Jackson will be there but I guess Van Gundy is gonna pick Kennard or Mitchell.

If all the PG's are off the board: I'd go Collins
If he's also off the board: I'd look to trade back for an extra pick or just take Mitchell if not.

I'm not too sure about Mitchell, I like how he can get to the rim, but his shot concerns me. and I don't think he would be a great fit for Van Gundy's system. I do like the idea of trading back, but hopefully for future picks, no extra ones this year.

I think Collins is going to be a bust, and with Ellenson on the roster, I'd take him over Collins. I hope that Frank falls but I don't see him getting past the Mavericks, unless Harry Giles or Jarret Allen go in the top 9.

Collins
Mitchell
Kennard
That's pretty much where I'm at at this point unless one of the obvious drop.

I really don't want an SG in this draft, maybe next year. but this year we need a quality PG or center prospect (one that can move his feet, block shots and hit free throws.) both would be amazing, I'd give up Ish Smith, Jon Leuer, Morris, this year pick and a future to walk away with Dennis Smith and Jarret Allen in this draft.

I really like Frank Jackson. Not sure if he will ever be a legit PG but that kid is going to be a talented scorer. He's got the athleticism, speed and first step to get to the rim and can shoot as well. I think people are going to be surprised when he gets drafted much higher than expected.

oh, I suppose you could add in Diallo from Kentucky who never played. I could be ok with him I guess.

Frank is gonna be far better than Fox. Better athlete and shooter. The only problem with Frank was that he was in the same team of Tatum, Kennard, Allen and Giles. For some reason after an amazing beginning of the season Coach K decided to sit Frank in order to give the PG to Allen. I had the feeling that they wanted to hide Frank and persuade him to stay.

Diallo withdrew from the draft before the deadline last night.
As for the topic, I wouldn't go with a center until Drummond is traded or the team is actually looking to trade him. There has been no indication whatsoever the Pistons want to move on from Andre despite a few of us wanting him gone ASAP. The rumors about them not saying no to trading him and offering him to Sacramento for Cousins were out there, but that's far from wanting to get rid of the guy.
A guy like Allen would be playing very little minutes with Drummond still on the team. I tend to believe in actual on-court time being one of the biggest factors in development. Guys aren't getting better sitting 20-30 minutes on the bench during games. That drives down their trade value too. Unless the player is absolutely killing it on the court in a small window they're not going to hold a ton of value for other teams. Especially for centers with the way the NBA is trending towards shooting and mobility. More traditional guys at that position just aren't that huge of a deal even if they can hit the occasional jumper. Teams need more than that. This is specifically in regards to Allen, who I don't think has all that great of a translatable jumper. He's a guy that has a questionable motor too and after going through the Drummond experience I don't want the team to add any player at any position with that negative. I get wanting someone who can protect the rim, that's definitely a need for Detroit with Baynes likely gone, but I don't think Allen is that guy with his lack of toughness and motor nor is Patton.
Now if we're talking about Zach Collins that changes things. I think he is the type of center teams are starting to value highly and he could find minutes at power forward alongside Andre too. Zach also seems to have that tough mindset and actually plays that way on the court while being a legitimate presence at the rim.
If it isn't a point guard or center, my choice is shooting guard. Caldwell-Pope will likely be re-signed even if the money is ridiculous. I wouldn't like it but I don't see the Pistons letting him walk either. But even with Kentavious back the team needs some more juice in the backcourt. Shooting is a big need but also some more players who can attack the basket. For years now the Pistons have been settling for bad jumpers after pounding the air out of the ball. A healthy Reggie bucks that trend and I think that's why some are still fans of his, but the current iteration of Reggie stays as far away from the rim as possible. Hopefully a defender too since Jackson and Smith are terrible on that side of the ball.
So yeah, Donovan Mitchell even though he has to get better efficiently shooting and driving too. But that's a gamble worth taking with his tools. Kennard fills the immediate shooting need and I would be okay with him. But he projects to be a big liability defensively and I don't know how much he would help overall. Still, there might be some other offensive skills to bank on with him. Justin Jackson could make sense too. He's more of a wing but can play the two just fine. Might be a guy Van Gundy is high on too as a team defender. No thanks to Terrance Ferguson. That's too much of a gamble on a guy that doesn't really make sense to gamble on.
Not really feeling any of the forward prospects that aren't Jackson, Tatum, and Isaac. And with the current stockpile of threes on fours on Detroit's roster this is close to the center situation too. Don't want to see Detroit take a player who has no path to playing time. Anyways, OG Anunoby doesn't do anything for me. Jonathan Collins is a dinosaur at power forward and probably needs to find a team that believes he can play center. Even then I'm not sure he's more than a role player with a small window of opportunity to take advantage of matchups.
That's about it aside from the Euro guys like Kurucs, Jeanne, and Hartenstein. I'm not familiar with them but the latter two are centers that the Pistons shouldn't want anyways.

Re: No PG at 12 in this draft, what would you do?
Take BPA regardless of position...which likely means Collins or Mitchell
Deals I'd be looking to make:
Sending RJ & a protected future first to Brooklyn for Booker and one of their firsts (#22 or #27) this year. Let's say #27.
Tobias to Minny for Rubio has to happen simultaneously...out goes RJ & Tobias, in comes Rubio and #27 plus we'd create some room under the luxury tax
Dre - Bobo
Jon - Booker - King
Mook - SJ
KCP - #12 Mitchell
Rubio - Ish - #27 Frank Jackson
Got Rubio to control the offense in a way RJ will never be able to & is a better defender...picked up 2 athletic guards to develop...opened up playing time for SJ & Kingy...created room under the tax.
Use Ish & Booker as trade bait for a better big man
Maybe I have too much faith in SJ & Henry...

This. Taking BPA when you're out of the holy top 5 range is usually yields better results. Regardless of positional need.
Plus, we need to try to at least hit some homeruns this year since our roster isn't fully set for next season.

I'm not worried about position, or fit, or "need" , especially with this roster. This team isn't good and doesn't have a high ceiling, we need talent, more than anything.

BPA, even if a pg is available.

I think the majority of the roster is set.
Dre
Jon
Mook
KCP
RJ
Bobo
Harris
King
SJ
Hilliard
Benji
Ish
That's 12 guys all under contract
Add the first rounder and we're looking @ 13 dudes & all positions covered by multiple guys:
5: Dre, Jon, Bobo
4: Jon, Tobias, Mook, King
3: Mook, Tobias, SJ, Hilly
2: KCP, SJ, Hilly, Benji
1: RJ, Ish, Benji
Benji & Hilly are cannon fodder or "practice players" or whatever you wanna call them but we're still 10 deep if you exclude them, 9 deep if you exclude Henry too
