Steve Alford didn’t hesitate when asked about Lonzo Ball’s enthusiastic and controversial father, LaVar.

Was LaVar Ball around the team much?

“Zero,” Alford said.

Was he ever at practice?

“Never at practice,” Alford said. “Never at practice; never called me.”

Did he ever try to meddle in your coaching?

“Never,” Alford said.

The Lakers will do their research on Lonzo’s vociferous dad.

When they call Alford, he knows what he’ll say.

“I’ll talk to them like I’m talking to you,” Alford said. “He was terrific. I had no dealings with him at all. He let me coach his son, didn’t get in the way at all.”

Great article by Tania Ganguli, who is quickly becoming by favourite Lakers beat writer. Quotes from Jeanie, Magic, and other players from UCLA.

This actually makes me feel better about his dad. As long as he lets Luke coach and not meddle with anything Lakers wise, I'm all for Ball at the #2.

i don't understand why that would even be a concern in the first place. playing for the Lakers or any NBA team for that matter is a job. why would Lavar interfere at his grown son's job. The Lavar distraction would be in the media not on the court or the training facility. if Lavar gets involved and distracts with the coaching Lonzo would become the laughing stock in the league because "he needs his Daddy" to fight his battles and that is NOT good for the Baller brand.

Haven't been following this thread but can someone enlighten me:

Josh Jackson = Justise Winslow, Stanley Johnson, or Jaylen Brown?

Agree, but I would love any one (or two for that matter) of those four on the Lakers.

Stanley Johnson would be the most realistic but even he would cost us a fair bit.

Wait, wait I meant who's the closest prospect going into the draft who's comparable to Jackson.

Well the ceiling I've seen discussed is Paul George. A 2 way SF.

The more I watch of Lonzo Ball, the more convinced I am that D'Angelo Russell is the perfect back court teammate for him.

Defensively -- they're going to have some issues. But with that said, two guards with that size closing out on shooters will help in so many areas. I also think Lonzo should defend 2's. He's better off ball so he can use his athleticism and jump passing lanes. Russell, through a large portion of the season early on, actually defended PG's pretty decently and that was even with the knee issues. Hopefully a summer of Russell getting into "world class shape" and adding some strength will help him in that regard.

Offensively -- Lonzo isn't very good in the pick & roll whereas D'Angelo excels at that. Russell is good at using picks, putting defenders on his hip and either finding shooters or pulling up from mid-range. He was also a lot better in the second half of the season at getting to the rim using some of his in and out dribbles. Against a slow team where the pace isn't what we want, that's where Russell is going to have to do his damage if we draft Ball.

When it comes to Lonzo on offence in the half court, he'll be doing a lot of what Nick Young did, except he can actually create for a teammate and break down a D instead of kicking it back to the PG or hoisting up a difficult shot. Lonzo is so good going to his left, imagine him doing those dribble hand off's with Randle going left.

In transition, that will instantly translate for Lonzo. He'll push the ball up court and get Russell, Ingram, Randle early opportunities to attack. I imagine Ingram and Randle will be doing a lot of leaking out this year.

Tempo will be hugely important, but even in times where it bogs down, there's definitely ways Lonzo can still be effective and a big reason why will be because of D'Angelo. And Lonzo will get better at his weaknesses over time, he's too smart of a player with all the tools not to be successful.

Could absolutely see him as an option at 28.

Been reading alot of Lakers fans thinking Jackson can play the 2. He is a SF that is closer to a 4 than a 2. This is why he will be undersized and exposed at the next level.

What do you think separates a 2 from a small ball 4 in terms of skill set?

Perimeter game, ability to create for himself, more offensive game than in the paint. He can grow into a useful 3 and D player, but taking him away from the paint really hurts his effectiveness.

He will end up being a 3.5/4 because he is so limited offensively which will lead to him getting abused on the defensive side, supposedly his biggest asset, because he lacks weight and size to guard the post.

He is terrible with his handle even at college level and consistently makes bad reads.
