So I'm going to the game today.

And it's Roy Halladay and Felix Hernandez.

ZOMG...

Hell of a game to go see, though Hernandez didn't really live up to his end of it

Halladay was back with his best stuff today, and the attack took advantage of Felix' lack of focus.

Hernandez was great except on the Glaus HR. He was mad at the homeplate umpire and was right to be...

Also, Beltre made one of the plays of the year and the runner was called safe...even though he was clearly out.

Anyway, good win but it could've been tighter.

No, Halladay definitely didn't have his best stuff... he had major control problems and was behind on 80% of the batters he faced or more.

He did induce a lot of ground balls and pop flies though, which was nice.

And no, Beltre dropped the ball, that's why the out wasn't called.

EDIT - Wow, that sounded super pessimistic... Halladay generally had good velocity but he was missing the corners a lot and getting behind batters, so it's inaccurate to say he had his best stuff. He did a FANTASTIC job of inducing easy plays for his defense (which game through in fine style) but yeah, this was not a game you could say he was hitting all his spots at his best.

Great game, and I loved that he 1-3'd it to end the CG SO (and anytime you post a 3H CG SO, it's a really outstanding effort no matter what I'm saying about control).

Not this play, the relay he made to 1st base.

I said CLEARLY out.

Oh, my bad, I thought you were talking about that play at first base, sorry.

You've got to be talking about that bunt single by... Clayton, I think it was (his second of the night, IIRC), the one that put two guys on base and eventually led to the Mariners loading the bases, right? Just before they walked Overbay so they could pitch to our best hitter instead?

EDIT - 'scuse me, that must have been Reed Johnson who got that friendly call.

Yeah I think it was Reed. Anyway, I was happy that he was called safe but at the replay we could clearly see Sexson reach out for the ball before Reed stepped on 1st. I just felt bad for the guy after he dove and made that great throw from the ground.

As for Felix well, he couldn't stay focused after his coach defended him which was the only thing he could do to help him. That's something he'll have plenty of time to work on - since he's just 21.

Yeah, Beltre deserved that one.

As for Hernandez... he pitched four really great innings in terms of not giving up hits or walks and then fell apart in the fifth when his lack of control finally caught up to him. He threw over 100 pitches and that fatigued him and his control was just gone by the time he finally got pulled. I wouldn't worry about it, I've seen Halladay have similar performances.

Hernandez needs to occasionally take something off of his heater and use more off-speed pitches; I only saw him use his changeup rarely, he was mostly challenging with his fastball and trying (and failing) to locate. It worked early but his control was too erratic...

Much like a young Doc, actually. He's also lost a lot of weight, I've noticed, which is promising. Hernandez is going to be fine, this just wasn't his night.
