It's not ridiculous to think Ainge might one day go after him. It is pointless to continue discussing trading for him over and over when there's been no inclination whatsoever that the Pelicans are even listening to offers.
there IS A reason for the Pelies to listen to trade offers for Davis. That reason is very simple. To get better. They are stuck right now with Davis/Boogie and nothing else. They play in the West with no clear path to success. They are going to be linked to Seattle at some point coming up....these are the realities of sports. Demps is on his last legs. If Boston approached him with the #1, BK18, and some combination of pieces (there are many combinations), he would HAVE to listen closely with their big picture in mind.
this trade would be risky for both teams. but it could ultimately prove the right move for 2 franchises who are clearly at different junctures.
If Boston cashes in their asset pool for a superstar in Davis, they can sign Hayward and are ready to contend. The Pelies can develop a young core and aim to build a super team through the draft.
Fultz/BK18(Ayton? Porter?), Crowder (team control, friendly contract), Rozier, rights to Yabusele, Zeller (waive) and maybe even an extra pick (Memphis?)
Follow that up by dealing Boogie to Washington for Gortat/Oubre/1st round pick
they bottom out and develop their young talent. in 2018 they have TWO lottery tickets with their own pick and the BK18. Let's say they end up with #2 and #4.
draft Ayton or Porter at #2. Draft Doncic or Bamba at #4.
that's how you build a team from the ground up.
could work out really well for both franchises.
Again, there's no indication whatsoever that they want to blow their team up. It's purely wishful thinking on the part of fans trying to pry Davis away. Just because you think they would be better off going in that direction doesn't mean they do.
Yeah. Davis is still only 24 and arguably a top-5 player in the league. It's hard to imagine any scenario in which they would get better by trading him.
