The Vertical: 2019 Warriors Salary Cap + Luxury Tax Could Equal $300 Million
As per Bobby Marks of the Vertical. Looks like this team only has a year or so before they have to start making serious changes. Really puts things in perspective how much they need to win this year, it's all but impossible for them have a squad this deep again.

Luckily there will be ads on jerseys by then and they're the most watched team in the NBA

Re: The Vertical: 2019 Warriors Salary Cap + Luxury Tax Could Equal $600 Million
Misleading title as it's ~$300M/yr.
Problem is when Klay and Green move off of their current deals and on to 30% high-cap max deals. So trading Klay is a posibility next summer (not an immediate need).
Of course Cleveland's currently much more expensive then GS, and they've also got guys getting older and more expensive.
This is how the league is set up to work though. Teams can't stay dominant for that long before huge luxury tax bills force them to adjust/lose talent. It's the answer to all the 'Golden State (and Cleveland) are too good, what's the league going to do about it?' talk.

It has to be troubling for Paul Allen that his team is right up there with Cleveland in terms of cost and they aren't a contender and have noway to take the next step to get there.

Is that really true though? I find that surprising.
Given how late west coast games start, not to mention most of their games are over by halftime

Golden State and Cleveland are going to keep paying whatever they have to because it guarantees them a trip to the finals every single year. Hell, the warriors don't even need Klay. They can more away from him and still be a contender.

Re: The Vertical: 2019 Warriors Salary Cap + Luxury Tax Could Equal $600 Million
Im guessing ~$300 mil a year tax hit is assuming that they resign Curry/KD/Klay and Draymond all to max contracts. I wouldnt be shocked if Klay would be the first to go via trade next summer then Draymond the summer after that. This front office appears to be very cap savvy and they have been great when it comes to the draft. Im sure if Klay and Draymond dont take big paycuts they will get traded and this team will look to build around Curry and KD with young prospects and cheap vets.

Advertisers also care about how often their replays are on ESPN, how many times their image (in jersey) is on screen, and especially jersey sales.

Most NBA owners could afford that. It's a matter of whether or not they'd be willing to spend that kind of money. Even the owners who are more than willing to spend for a contender like Dan Gilbert have a number they'll finally balk at. At the end of the day, you still want your team to make you money, after all. These guys didn't get rich by losing money on hobbies.

Yup.
The total bill could wind up being $600 mil a year eventually if they really want to keep the whole group together. That's staggering.

No way any sensible owner will pay that luxury tax. I don't care If they have Bill Gates money.
Handsome.

Re: The Vertical: 2019 Warriors Salary Cap + Luxury Tax Could Equal $300 Million
This is absurd.
Dray is signed THROUGH 2020. Klay is signed through 2019. Projecting the cap for 4 years from now is idiotic. To have those two signed to deals for 4 and 3 years respectively at their outstanding cap #s is outstanding for the Dubs. To pretend this is all going to fall down is comical. KD and Steph will sign this offseason and they will have the best core ever tied up for years to come at salaries the entire league would kill for. Assuming max salary extensions for guys who are under contract for the next 4 seasons is downright stupid.

It will be interesting watching them make hard decisions about who is really important to that team out of their 4 all stars.

I would think Klay is the odd man out. Hes great and all but the other two are MVPs and Green is the lynchpin to their defense

Projecting the cap for 4 years from now is actually kind of what front offices try to do. And last I checked this year was 2017, which is 2 less than 2019.
It's entirely reasonable to realize that Klay can start working on an extension next offseason and McCaw's contract expires at the same time. Right after Curry and Durant get the super max. The full impact might not hit till the 2019 offseason, but it's not insane to have the discussion.

NBA contracts are only 4-5 years. Scheduling out your roster 4+ years from now is like asking what the weather forecast is for Jan 2018.
Livingston is gone. But its entirely likely Iggy will be extended this offseason and they will be at the apron (read: play in the NBA Finals for the 4th straight year without being in the Lux Tax once). After two more seasons, almost certainly remaining in the Finals they would have some decisions to make, but will have full Bird rights on them to make the choice. They would likely have been to 6 straight Finals at that point and have a dynasty the likes we have not seen before and they will have more revenues than they would know what to do with.
It sounds more like people wanting the absurd talent monopoly disbanded and are trying to figure out how long it will be. A long damn time.
