I love this, especially since OKC is my hometown and I love Russ.

So has he signed the new deal yet? It's my understanding we can offer it to him June 1.

He's not signing a new deal until next off-season.

Really? Why woulden't he sign it now? Can the Thunder really afford to let him hit the open market?

July 1st is the date. Not June.

Yes. While Westbrook has until July 1 until the start of the regular season to agree to the DPE, he could also wait, opt out of the final year of his deal in the summer of 2018 and sign with the Thunder as a free agent (although Westbrook would hit unrestricted free agency, a la Kevin Durant, and could be wooed by other teams).

Also, the new CBA doesn't go into effect until 7/1. It's July 1st when he can sign.

He can force a trade and sign the contract with a better team. He can go to FA and sign with another team and only lose around $10M over the life of his bball career earnings. He has said repeatedly he wants to win and he has a much better chance of doing that if he forces a trade to Boston. What little money he will lose in career bball earnings he can easily make up in local endorsement deals in a larger market.

The only reason Russ has to sign this off-season is if he is betting against himself staying healthy and a max player for the next 4 seasons or he really wants to be in OKC. He is in LA right now not OKC. I don't see him as the type of person who bets against himself. Maybe I'm wrong and he LOVES OKC, but that wouldn't explain why he is in LA right now and his son was born in LA.

Also it's about a $35 mil difference if he signs elsewhere then signs another max from what I've read.

If he does not sign the extension this off season I feel like they have no choice but to deal him.

It's only $35M if you compare a 4yr max to a 5 yr max. If you break it down by yearly salary it is minimal. That is assuming Russ would get another max contract after 5 years, which is unlikely. Russ could actually end up making more money signing a 3 yr max next off-season with a different team than a 5 year max, with bird rights, after that. Wade couldn't get a max contract last off-season and I don't see Russ getting one in 6 seasons, when his 5 yr extension would end, at the same age Wade signed last off-season. I could see him still getting one in 4 years at age 32, CP3's age. If I'm his agent I'm doing everything in my power to get him to sign a shorter deal in a bigger market, because my job is to maximize his money and that isn't limited to basketball income.

Most basketball players live in LA in the offseason. It's kind of the unofficial NBA capital.

Yes. He should be traded on or before June 22nd. This is one of the primary reasons I'm not looking forward to the draft. Presti either does the right thing for the organization and moves Russ or OKC is in a slow decline for the rest of his career due to their cap situation and limited assets.

Haven't run the math, but using this as my source.

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/04/26/thunders-offseason-moves-start-here-offer-russell-westbrook-220-million-contract/

It’s hard to imagine Westbrook walking away from that money — it’s about $75 million more guaranteed and one more year than any other team can offer. That’s a lot of cash to leave on the table, I don’t care how much you make in endorsements. (If Westbrook left, signed a max deal elsewhere for four years, then signed a max deal for that fifth year later, he still would get roughly $35 million less than signing with the Thunder now.) Once Westbrook is locked into place, Presti can start looking to reshape the Thunder roster.

Also, if Russ is traded on draft night I'll video tape myself eating a shoe and post it here.

I don't think you will be eating shoes because I don they deal him on the night of the Draft, because I think he signs a new deal with them this off season. But, if he decides not to sign the deal after July 1, they will start the process of trading him.
