I'm not worried about the THJ situation. Should be an easy call. If another team drives up the price, he's gone. If he can be kept on the cheap; why not.

If another team makes a high offer and the Hawks stupidly match, there will be a very high chance of a bad contract. I have a hard time seeing THJ develop into even a league average starter

Bleacher Report ranks THJ as the 3rd best SG in Free Agency this summer:
:jawdrop:

3. Tim Hardaway Jr., Atlanta Hawks

Age: 25

Free-Agency Status: Restricted

2016-17 Salary: $2,281,605

Tim Hardaway Jr. took Kent Bazemore's starting job toward the end of the regular season, and he kept it during the Atlanta Hawks' six-game stay in the playoffs.

Depending on how the Hawks feel about the sunk-cost fallacy, that might make them reluctant to match the hefty offer sheet they must know is coming for Hardaway. The Brooklyn Nets are flush with cash, and they committed to spending $75 million on Allen Crabbe last year, only to see the Portland Trail Blazers match.

Hardaway isn't the marksman Crabbe is, but he's the same age, has more off-the-bounce game and scored more points in fewer minutes this season. In other words, if Atlanta chooses to keep Bazemore over Hardaway, it may not be because last summer's signee is better. It may be because he's cheaper.

A slight uptick in three-point accuracy (35.7 percent) and another step forward as a pick-and-roll ball-handler could make Hardaway one of the game's best bench sparks—the kind that can even singlehandedly win games down the stretch when he's hot.

THJ might become a legit 6th man in the NBA. He's far from there and about to get paid as if he were. If the Hawks stand pat, he might help them squeak into the playoffs.

You know Baze is set to make more than Shro. Got to stop with the bad contracts

Sac sounds like the perfect team to over-pay THJ. I don't see him as a viable (better than avg) starting wing, now or in the future. Rather Hawks sign lower level FAs to develop. They already did that with THJ, just forgot to sell high at the deadline.

I don't buy it. Sacramento is not going to overpay a guy to be their 6th man after trading DeMarcus frickin' Cousins for Buddy Hield. Any offer they give him will be tempered by that and well within the realm of getting matched by the Hawks.

Don't know how Cavs could pull off a run at THJ. But it'd definitely make them a stronger team next season.

Cleveland is already waaaaay over the cap with their guaranteed salaries - they'd have to clear a MINIMUM of $35 million in salary to have CLEAR capspace to sign Waiters, THJr or Simmons (assuming $12 mil salary on the low end). They have the MLE of $8 million to use but if THJr signs an offer of $8 mil that's an easy match for the Hawks. They can't do a SnT since they are over the cap.

I really wish we had just let Baze walk considering we drafted like 3 wings, and had THJ already. I would hate to let THJ because of Bazemore. Bazemore was just another DMC. At least THJ can create on his own and actually plays a position he is fit for. Even if he is just a 6th man, we could use that offense for a team that has troubles finding consistent offense.

It's official:

Hardaway Jr. a restricted free agent as Hawks extend qualifying offer
The Hawks extended a qualifying offer to Tim Hardaway Jr. on Monday officially making the shooting guard a restricted free agent. The move was expected and gives the Hawks flexibility regarding Hardaway’s contract.

Now, the Hawks have the right of first refusal and can match any offer sheet that Hardaway might sign from another team. The qualifying offer is binding as a one-year contract. Hardaway’s offer is for $3,335,707. He can choose to sign the offer and be under contract next season at that salary.

Hardaway and the Hawks did not reach an agreement on a rookie contract extension by the deadline last November, setting up his restricted free agency. There were talks but a deal was never close.

Last season he averaged 14.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 79 games. He shot .357 from 3-point range. Hardaway earned a spot in the starting lineup by the end of the regular season and for the playoffs.

I'm hoping we can match for $14 million or less.

But I suspect he'll see an offer or two at $17 million+. That seems too much for a flawed player best suited to come off the bench.

The Hawks and Tim Hardaway Jr.: To match or not to match?

The Atlanta Hawks extended a qualifying offer to Tim Hardaway Jr. This is a procedural move that will enable them to match any offer he might accept from another team and thereby retain him.

Question is, should they match/keep Hardaway?

Most of this rides on the answer to another question: How badly do they want to land in the 2018 lottery? Were I the Hawks, my answer would be, “Desperately.”

Hardaway turned into a useful player last season. That’s not quite the same as being a consistently good player. Kent Bazemore is a useful player whom the Hawks paid dearly to re-sign last summer, and I’m reasonably certain new management would dump that contract in a millisecond. My argument against Hardaway is the same as mine was against Bazemore: He’s just a guy. Every NBA team, even the lousy ones, has similar guys.

By season’s end, Hardaway became a starter. Come the playoffs, he became a non-factor.

If the Hawks could persuade Hardaway to take a reasonable salary on a short-term basis, that’d be one thing.

But if you’re not in playoff contention, do you need Hardaway at any price?

When it comes to THJ vs. Bazemore, THJ is at least good at something, and could actually become a starter. Bazemore was actually just a useful 7th man, with no real skill to turn to. If we wanted to give a 15 million dollar contract per year to someone, it should have been THJ. Bazemore was more like a 8 million dollar kind of guy in this era of new contracts..

So now unless we can get rid of Bazemore, we pretty much have to let THJ just walk elsewhere and take what we can get, unless Schlenk feels we can handle having both players occupying over 30 million dollars per year.

Edit: Also from Chris Mannix (that was in reference to a Milsap-story so not 100% sure that also applies to THJ):

Which teams still have capspace to sign him for more than $11 mil per.....I'd assume Sac, Philly, Brooklyn, LAL, Indy
