http://www.nba.com/lakers/news/170616-scouting-draft-jesse-buss?cid=tw

Mike Trudell: How did Larry Nance, Jr. first get on your radar?
Jesse Buss: His body of work overall as a senior was pretty impressive, and when we began watching him more on Synergy, that’s when we turned our focus to him more closely as a potential guy we could draft late in the first round. He then participated in the Chicago pre-draft combine and did pretty well, and we got him here in June for a workout that really sealed the deal for us. We just knew we had to have him on draft night, and we were hoping he was there at No. 27.

MT: So you had four years of tape on Nance, Jr. from Wyoming. … How much does one workout in your gym tell you?
Buss: For example, they don’t do as much pick and roll in college as in the NBA. We get to see more of that in a workout setting than in going to watch a typical college game. But at the end of the day, you have to take the entire body of work, and go with your gut decision. It can’t just be one game. It has to be multiple games, tape work, workouts and interviews to understand what type of kid he is.

MT: I understand you use a tier system as a part of your big board, which people who play fantasy sports intensely might understand. How do you utilize it and when did you put it into practice for the staff?
Buss: We have our board with guys ranked one through 60. We separate them in groups like a tier system, which is something I developed about three years ago with our staff. We group guys based on their talent level. And then, we have a discussion if we have a couple guys in the same tier. The 2015 Draft was the first time we used the tier system.

Much more inside, great read.

The only sports news source you can respect.

Of course it's this time a year Jason McLaed usually perks up with the real deal insider stuff.

My thought exactly, but I went on the Phily board and ask them if they would take Dloading for the 3rd pick and they all said no way. I think Russell's value is not as high as we Lakers fans see and this is not a good thing. Maybe adding the 28th pic would make the deal happen.

Philly is building a defensive juggernaut. Russell does not help that at all. Reason a lot of us want Jackson or Isaac is to maintain that defensive presence. BS/Covington/Embiid is a solid D core. Adding Russell is a huge weak link.

Philly fans have been salivating over D'Angelo ever since before he was drafted two years ago. That was when they thought they could get him with the 3rd pick but instead they ended up with OK4. Sorry, can't have him, he's ours, we're not trading him.

Embiid has played a grand total of 31 games in the three years he's been in the league. Enough said about that. Cool personality though.

Covington was being booed by his home crowd last season. What kind of player gets booed by his own fans?

Simmons at PG will be a disaster since he can't shoot. 35% FG at Summer League and then he was injured for the year.

Back to what this thread is supposed to be about, I hope the second workout in Chino Hills today goes well for LaVar and Lonzo.

yes he does and your name change is not fooling anyone, so I suggest when your RealGM ban is hanging by a thread, don't try to rile up the lakers board of all places.

D'Angelo Russell is absolutely worth this year's #3 +#28 ... a different year maybe not.

Recent # 3 lottery selections:
2016 Jaylen Brown
2015 Jahlil Okafor
2014 Embiid
2013 Otto Porter
2012 Bradley Beal
2011 Enes Kanter
2010 Derek Favors
2009 James Harden
2008 OJ Mayo
2007 Al Horford
2006 Adam Morrison lol
2005 Deron Williams
2004 Ben Gordon

As you can see there's some talent but the 3rd pick is far from any sort guarantee. At this point D'Angelo Russell is on a career path to be better than most of the players taken 3rd over the last thirteen years.

Who do you think are the top 3 of those top 3s?
I'm thinking it goes Harden > Horford > Beal as of right now

Deron Williams was really good for a few years but it didn't last long.

I would probably go Harden > Horford > Williams/Beal and hope Beal's peak lasts longer than Deron's.

And here come all the Fultz hype that had been missing since he had just been focused on Boston.

If they're that in love with him throwing in Randle is a no brainer, doubt its enough

If Fultz did indeed kill the workout I doubt Lakers brass would be trying to tell the world about it.
