Monta Ellis suspended 5 games

Suspended 5 games for the anti-drug program. Big opportunity for Joe Young or a draft pick or whoever gets those minutes those 5 games.

Ellis definitely not helping his cause with anyone wanting him around long-term.

I don't think he has long term potential here no matter what. It's more a matter of if we trade him before his contract is up or not. And I still think it makes more sense to keep him around as an overpaid backup that's comfortable starting if need be. I still would rather eat that money for a year than trade him away with a draft pick that could be worth more years down the line

With the clause in his deal nullifying his final year if he's cut before the end of the season, I think we'll try like hell to get someone to take him and either pay a 2nd round pick or if we can't move him we just buy him out. He's due about $11.2 million for 2017-18. I'd offer him $8. That could be stretched but I wouldn't I just live with the $8 million dead money for 1 yr rather than $3 million for 3.

Why would he take a pay cut? Would you take a 30% cut if your pay was guaranteed?

If it's August and you know you're getting cut in March and you're full year pay check is gonna be $11.2 million and I say here is $8.5 million today, you can stay home and watch TV if you want. Or you could find another team to sign with maybe get $2-3 million for 1 more year. But the time value of money comes into play. You have $8.5 million in your hand Now not spaced out over the season and end up getting cut in March. Who knows he might be able to sign for the league min in Golden State and end up winning a ring. GSW is where he started out.

I think guaranteed contracts provide for an offset if you're waived and make money elsewhere. So if we renounce Ellis and he gets a minimum contract elsewhere, it should reduce our obligation.
