If he had left out that it has to be Lakers, sure, it would have been courteous.
If he is so keen on joining the Lakers, no matter how good/bad they are, why didn't he inform Larry Bird, I don't know, somewhere around february 23 of his intentions?
If I'm not mistaken, Chris Paul was courteous when he informed the Hornets he was going to leave. I don't recall him mentioning 1 specific team and first he was traded to the Lakers, before being traded to the Clippers. Dude accepted it because it made the Clippers a very good team.
He probably would have accepted the Lakers too and that's the bummer about George his plans to leave: if you keep mentioning you want to play for the Lakers, you are not doing your current team a favor.
He is giving all 28 other teams a heads up, that they risk giving up quality assets for a 1 year rental.
His current team gets to pay the bill for Larry Bird telling everyone George doesn't make the decisions around here: "look who is making decisions now, good luck with your decisions trying to replace me"
