Maybe we had his prime last year.

I don't think the Heat need to sign either of those players to deals that could jeopardize future moves. Especially since as you noted Waiters is still pretty unproven and Hayward is going to get a ridiculous amount of money.

On a somewhat related note, I think the new CBA is basically forcing teams to rethink the financial feasibility of assembling a super team. For example, let's say Hayward "settles" for $25,000,000 this year. That's still 1/4 of the salary cap space. Even when combined with the relatively cheap salaries of Dragic and Whiteside there isn't much room for any other talent. Especially since if you add TJ's salary in 2018, the salary number would be close to $90,000,000. Yes, the Heat could resign the much coveted McBob to another 4 year deal with the leftover money they would have, but not much else.

Would such a core be a championship contender? I would say a 3rd seed at best and more likely a 4/5 seed with elimination in the second round.

Furthermore, necessary role-player re-signings such as Richardson, Winslow, and Mcgruder could put the Heat into the luxury tax, a penalty that no team can afford to pay for long.

The Heat don't need to waste their time caught in the rat race of over paying for all star talent in this new CBA environment. Teams like the Warriors, Cavs, and even the Celtics will soon realize the pressure that comes with having to pay max deals to a team of all stars/superstars.

What the league is about to become is back to what it used to be, a league where the all-star talent is spread thin and championships are won by the one or two all stars a team has combined with great role players. It may take 3 years to reach that final point, but there isn't much the Heat can do to win a championship between now and then anyways. All they can do is keep developing their talent, not overpay for talent like Waiters/Hayward, and bide their time for that true FA that could make them a championship contender.

Big changes are coming. Stay tuned.

Not making the playoffs is not "very good last year".

I was listening to Zach lowe's podcast, and out of nowhere he went off on a Heat tangent, saying that free agents and their representatives have noticed what's going on in Miami. He says they wonder what Spo and the Heat culture can do for them and their careers, as far as making them a better player or prolonging their career. He says it won't land you a Hayward or a Griffin, but it will get you a meeting. Then he talked about potential good destinations for George and didn't mention the Heat at all. :smh:

Why would Charlotte be trading Batum anyway? Doesn't getting Dwight signal an all-in for making noise in the PO (ie trying to get out of the first round).
