Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
Yeah that's bull. If they liked him that much they wouldn't have risked losing him by dropping back.

ESPN alert says Bacon is an aggressive scorer with potential to be a good defender.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but this looks like they had their heart set on someone at 31 (Swanigan, White, Hart) and when they were taken, panicked and moved back. Adding cash to move back 9 spots after moving up 10 is a sh*t stain on 2 previously brilliant offseason moves (D12; Monk at 11). IMO, it weakens the trade we made to get Howard because we essentially moved into the latter part of the first round.... only to move back to where we were prior.
MJ is a few million dollars richer though, you're forgetting to take that into account.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
Possible wrinkle: I wonder if we put feelers out to see which prospects would be receptive to a two-way deal. Doubtful Frank Jackson or anyone actually worth 31 would be, so we moved back and took the top guy that would be. Could be crucial with as close as we are to the tax line.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
I know I poo-poo'd the selection, but that was more about the FO than the player.
I agree that Bacon has G-Boro written all over him for a minute, but he is intriguing. He averaged 17ppg vs. Isaac's 12ppg for FSU and shot similar 3pt and FT numbers.
By no means am I trying to relate the two, but Bacon did put up some points. Watching a few of his vids he appears to have great size, athleticism and an ability to score in transition a lot. Seems to be good on the boards too. Maybe he's what we wished PJ would have turned into. Just have to wait a few years, but he could be a great off-the-bench guy.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
I think Bacon gets a lot of hate because he's got a very 90s basketball game. Mid-range, isolation, and lacks great 3 point shooting. The truth is, this guy has good size (if he's a SG), athleticism, and can flat out score. I do agree, if he was their guy, then they should have taken him at 31, but if you pull back the curtain you'll see he has potential, and maybe more than Frank Jackson. You just need to ignore all the dis-info. This pick really says a lot about what they think of Weber, and that not a bad thing.

Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
More on Bacon from a Duke fan that lives in Tallahassee (so he goes to FSU home basketball games) from the Duke Scout board:
Now that I've had time to remove emotion from losing Jackson, I can see why Cho (and MJ) like Bacon.

Body like a linebacker, excels at attacking off the dribble and finishing through contact, but very inconsistent from the perimeter....when he's locked in, he can carry a team (he scored 26 points in the 2nd half to beat UVA in C-Ville), but there were too many games in which he disappeared....

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
I'm going to defend Cho in this one. When it comes to the second round, barring someone like Giles or Anunoby falling, the possibilities of an expert and a casual NBA fan guessing who would be the hidden gem (if there's one) in the picks 31-60 are practically the same (I have been reading too much of Kahneman/Tetlock recently, I believe :p). For every Isiah Thomas there are hundreds of PJ Hairstons. So, if they really wanted Bacon and believed it was the right pick (I'd rather have Harsenstein, Ojeleye or a PG) let's give the guy the opportunity to prove himself. I highly doubt he will be more than a filler for having a 15-men squad but, hey, low risk-high reward.

I get what you're saying and it could even stretch back to very late first round picks too depending on the draft class. My thing is that this was a deep draft class and 31 this year seemed more like picks 24-26 in previous years.
Totally agree with your assessment though... Bacon has the potential and tools to carve out a niche here, and with some seasoning, could be a valuable depth guy on the wing in a few years.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
Again, this is Cho the moron drafter. He runs his analytics program and, no matter what spits out, follows it right down the drain. He thinks he is so clever and cunning. His draft record proves otherwise.
A stupid move and sour taste at the end of day of good fortune, where Monk fell into our lap and Cho didn't f*** it up.
Bacon has some skills but, per the previous scouting report, has fatal flaws for the NBA game. He either gains a tremendous willingness to change habits and learn or he will be outta here in a year.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Highly unlikely. Cho likes high character guys. Bacon has the skills to foot hold a roster spot with the Swarm as long as it takes for him to develop. He is much likely to one day become a rotation player than to bust. After all we are talking about a second round pick here not the guy we took number two back in the days.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
I was disappointed in the pick because I thought we could get someone special (more so than Jackson too) at 31. But honestly, what I'm most disappointed in is all these undrafted rookies who have been snatched up by other teams for their summer league squads (e.g., Dozier with LAK, etc). That is where you can find another potential difference maker as well. I remember Cho doing his pressed last year during the second round thinking WTF dude you can still make trades and talk to agents of potential undrafted players to get a commitment for summer league.
IMO, that (and seemingly trading most second rounders for cash) goes to show how much the organization values the second round of the draft, which is close to Nil. Which is mind blowing considering you're financing the Swarm.

Who knows? Maybe we did get someone special. We all know the Hornets don't like second round picks, but they decided to keep this one for some reason.
As far as the Summer league deals go. They are not training camp deals. Teams usually scout players from other teams often signing outstanding players to their training camp.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
I am most disappointed because we could have gone after the 35 with a future second and still drafted a 1st round slip at 31 while taking Bacon at 35. Oh well still thrilled with Monk and the Howard trade so I guess I just hope Bacon is better than we think.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
Realistically I don't think the Hornets were ever going to take two 6'3" shooting guards in the same draft.
6 6 wing, good size with potential to be a good 3 & D player seems like a decent 2nd round pick to me. I would still prefer Frank Jackson or my homer pick Blossomgame, but I don't think the sky is falling. Who ever we took in the 2nd was spending most of the year in Greensboro either way. Bacon has the potential to be good nba rotational player if he can develop a 3 over the next couple years.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: The Dwayne Bacon Thread
Bacon got one of the corniest highlight vids I've ever seen from a wing player. Lol. It'll be interesting to see if he'll make Treveon expendable. I liked Treveon as bench fodder that can come into the game and not look lost. Treveon was better than PJ Hairston.
