I went to UT as well. The guy was certainly hard to miss on the court lol. He really came on strong as the year went on, we didn't really have many shooters around him so his real big impact was on defense and finishing plays inside.

I think if we had had a better season and if we had played the way he did at the end of the season from the get go then we would've likely went quite a bit higher

Yep proud longhorn here. Allen is a project but he has everything to be the perfect C under Kenny's system. Our Defense will improve next season for sure. He is just huge and still growing. Very high IQ defensively which will be massive under Kenny's defensive schemes... offensively he is a great lobs n dunks center who can run the floor with a surprisingly decent touch inside. He has solid shooting mechanics but no confidence yet. I think we will need to be patient with him but he has high ceiling.

Yeah top 15 talent for me. I think we might have pulled another Levert type deal

Just read up on his draftexpress profile... And now my expectations have been tempered

I'm still okay with the pick, but I have a feeling Allen will be seeing a fair bit of time in the G-League early on.

First reaction to the pick was meh. Didn't do a ton of reach on him because I thought he was going to be long gone. Didn't like the brief stuff I saw on him because I read he had no offensive game other than dunks and what he should do well rebound and block shots he was average at. Add to that he wasn't aggressive and his IQ was lacking and I wasn't impressed.

So as soon as we draft him I start watching more film and I must say I am extremely impressed. The frame and athletic ability are top notch. He is a modern day center with great movement ability to defend the PnR. Even if he has to slump off the elite guards some his length will still contest shots. He needs to build up strength but at 19 that will come. Still though there are very few back to the basket pound the post type players so his weakness will not get exposed night in and night out. That brings me to his average rebounding and shot blocking numbers. If you look deeper into it though there are signs to hang your hat on. One he played PF in college which is a joke. Covering stretch 4's in college certainly hurt his positioning. Playing closer to the basket in the NBA should help in that regard. With the right coaching (which we certainly have) he should flourish as an anchor to our defense with great help defense and solid rebounding.

Now on to the weakest part of his game offense. He has little range but he's got an effortless stroke which gives hope for at least an elbow jumper and good FT% for the future. KA is a developmental wiz and you never know if he can get him shooting three's in the future but for now if a K-Mart consistent elbow jumper comes and he hits a good clip from the line that is more than enough. Offensively inside he is nearly elite finishing at the rim already. He obviously can throw it down with his size and vertical but he is very underrated with two equally solid baby hooks with either hand. Add to that a soft touch on the move and he should not be a Drummond/Jordan type offensive player. Right now outside of the jumper with some added strength and learning how to keep the ball away from swiping guards down low he should be an immediate contributor on both ends.

Projections
Ceiling - Rudy Gobert - Elite defense and shot blocker with good offense and a nice FT touch.
Floor: JaVale McGee - Athlete with no IQ bench big at best
Most Likely: Tyson Chandler - Chandler would be a great comp for him. Chandler was a very good finisher around the rim and worked very nice in the PnR. He was a mini double double guy with 10 and 10 with elite defense. If Allen can become Chandler I think we'll all be thrilled with a 12 and 10 with 1.5 block career even though we hope for closer to Rudy with 15, 12 and 2.5 blocks.

Fact is his ceiling is high and despite C's not being a major part of the NBA game his movement ability makes him a modern day C. I love this upside of this pick and I think he has the drive to reach his ceiling. Can't wait to watch a lineup of Lin, Russ, Levert, RHJ and Allen play next year.

Lineup:
Lin/Dinwiddie/Goodwin
Russell/IW/Harris
Levert/SKIL/KJ
RHJ/Booker/ACY
Allen/Moz/Nicholson

I can see the Marcus Camby comparison too...

For me that would be ironic. Personally I felt Brook Lopez was our Patrick Ewing(not as good i know) .... now Allen possibly being our Camby, that be crazy for me.

Now we need an Allan Houston...

Presser just ended, with Kenny, Sean, and Jarrett. Couple observations:

-Kenny loves his versatility, his speed. Side note: I love the transparency and color that Kenny provides when he discusses his team and players. His insights are night and day compared to Lionel hollins' stupidity and cliches. You can tell he gets it.

-I love Jarrett's self awareness and humility. Compared to top picks like josh Jackson and his dumbass Rolex last night, he seems to understand he's part of a unit and he's only gonna stick if he improves. He highlighted the fact that he needs to bulk up and increase strength, and overall needs to work on his game. Seems like he has the maturity of say... a Tim Duncan.

I love this pick even more, and can't wait to see him develop.

NyCeEvO wrote:I prefer other bigs like Bam and Pasecniks over Wilson. A lot of the stuff that he did at college won't work in the league. The two biggest boxes that need to be checked on my list for a desired big are agility, then toughness. (Pasecniks doesn't provide elite agility but his combined height and mobility presents other problems for the defense.)

I want someone who can hedge, or even blow up picks. That's a major deterrent especially in today's league which utilizes PnR so often. It's also why someone like Noel is an underrated yet still dominant defender.

Wilson's ability to stay in front of college guards might have been ok (although it was a bit shaky IMO), but it won't not hold up in the league.

So far, I like Allen's freakish measurements and his good east-west agility. That's exactly what I was referring to. What made T.Chandler so great and Noel great at present is that they they can stay with the ballhandler for a seconds after the pick because they were/are agile enough to do so. They are also long enough to deny the entry/lob pass to the rolling big.

While I'm a bit concerned about Allen's weak base, I can definitely see the potential there. If he can build up so his lower body so he has a bit more vertical explosion and a stronger stance, he can be a big time NBA defender.

So I guess we don't need to fret about Noel anymore?!

Yeah, it decreases the need for him dramatically. Noel still possesses great diagonal movement as well but the good thing about Allen is that he's longer than Noel and will be on a 4-year rookie contract instead Noel's soon-to-be max offer sheet.

Allen's potential is all in his legs. If he gets stronger there, watch out.
