Karl Malone was better than Tim Duncan

Post#1 » by Percentsign » Fri Jun 23, 2017 12:52 pm

Rings are a team achievement, so they cannot factor so heavily in a player's legacy. By all statistics, Malone was a better player:

Malone -- 25.0 ppg in 1476 games
Duncan -- 19.0 ppg in 1392 games

Malone -- 3.4 assists per game
Duncan -- 3.0 assists per game

Malone -- 51.6 FG%
Duncan -- 50.6 FG%

Malone -- 74.2 FT%
Duncan -- 69.6 FT%

Malone -- 234.6 Win-Shares
Duncan -- 206.4 Win-Shares

Malone -- 9 seasons with 15.0 Win-Shares
Duncan -- 2 seasons with 15.0 Win-Shares

Malone -- 16 seasons with 9.0 Win-Shares
Duncan -- 13 seasons with 9.0 Win-Shares

What statistics you want to use for Duncan's favor?

That Duncan got 2 more blocks per game?

Big fan of all 3 but if I had to choose 1 to lead my team I'm taking Timmy.

Wow good job OP, you sure convinced me

I mean really, this is your only argument? What, some raw stats and some win shares?

I agree. Garnett had a better peak; he at his best was better than Duncan at Duncan's best.

Duncan, however, held up better in his mid-late 30s. Garnett fell apart after his age 31 season.

He was better. Then Tim came into the league and put an end to that.

No. No he wasn't. This probably belongs in the player comparison board.

I wish to counter with my position on the matter - Karl Malone was worse than Tim Duncan.

There's nothing that Malone and KG could do that Timmy couldn't just as well if not better, plus he was a better leader.

I'm just amazed at how similar some of their personal accolades are

Both lead the league in WS twice
Both lead the league in +/- once
Both lead the league in VORP once
Both have two MVP's
Both won player of the week 23 times
Malone has 8 player of the month awards, Duncan has 9
Malone has 14 All-Star appearances, Duncan has 15
Malone was All-NBA 16 times, Duncan 17
Both never beat Michael Jordan in the Finals

They're both awesome.

I don't know, every single defensive impact stat in existence, maybe?

Garnett was better at passing, ballhandling, shooting and pick and roll defense.

I disagree. KG was capable of guarding guards as well as forwards but Duncan was a much better rim protector which is the most important skill for a big man on the defensive side of the floor. KG may have been able to shoot a little better outside of the paint but I honestly don't need that in my PF and I'd rather have someone with the skill set of Duncan as my PF instead.
