I do think we should work on an extension. No need to let other teams try to offer him and then he could become and unrestricted FA in a few years. We need to try to sign him to a Steph Curry (bad ankles) type of extension. Hopefully Embiid signs for less than a max offer. I start out trying to get a bargain because he has been injured. He probably doesn't do that though but I would start there.

The future of this franchise both on and off the court rides with Embiid. You lock him up and if it blows up in your face, then it does.

There's no need to throw all the eggs in the Embiid basket. Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz should be able to form a contending core with any reasonably impactful rebounding, rim protector.

Yes there is, he has potential to be the best player in the entire NBA and one of the greatest ever. I mean, they have to re-sign him, he's a free agent at the end of next season. They either re-sign him or they don't, and they obviously aren't going to let him walk, and if they sign him it's obviously not going to be on a one year deal where he would be unrestricted the year after.

If he plays a healthy season, extend or match whatever offersheet he gets after the season.

Extending him now is outright negligible. Unless you can sucker him into a Steph Curry extension like Unbreakable suggested.

They didn't say they going to extend him now they said they are working on an extension as the next step. They never said when they'd come to terms, but it's always good to keep an open dialogue and keep talks ongoing. That's the healthiest way to keep a relationship with players and agents.

Can take this any which way, but Embiid seems like he's aware enough to understand situation.

If you put a gun to my head and said I don't have an option, I have to decide, max or nothing, right now, I'd say yes 100% of the time.

There is no gun. If there's going to be an extension right now today, it should be a team friendly deal. If he plays half the season healthy and is still eligible for an extension, he has regained a lot of negotiating power to me. But I need to see him healthy again. I freaking love Embiid as much as everybody else. But you can't let emotion get in to it.

We aren't going to low ball him and I don't think he'd leave for an equivalent max offer elsewhere. I think he wants to be here and see it through. He's also basically a recruiter for other players to come here. He is the heart of the process. We'll max him next summer.

We do what we can control and don't worry about what we can't.

That said, add center depth to limit Biid's risk of injury and extend his contract.

Embiid should, and will get a maximum contract when the time comes. I'm certainly not arguing that he shouldn't get one.

There is just no upside to doing it now, unless it is an under market contract. Hinkie always talked about making decisions at the last possible moment, and we have time for this decision.

He has already shown that he is a superstar talent wise, even if he hasn't played long enough for it to be generally accepted. He needs to complete this up coming season with no recurrence of the navicular injury. If he does that then he is on his way to being maybe the best player in the NBA, and he should be paid as such.

Let's not create problems when we don't need to. If he will take a max deal that voids on a navicular fracture then go for it, but I don't see him signing that.

It will be the same situation that happened with Steph Curry when it looked like he 1 was injury away from retirement. Both the Warriors and Curry wanted to do a deal.... but the Warriors obviously wanted to wait until the end of the season to see if his body could hold up.

Curry though wanted to get a deal done and signing for $44 mill guaranteed over 4 years would set his family up for life anyway.... even though it was at a massive discount.

Joel and the 76ers would be smart to do something similar. He could get $130m over 5 years... I'd offer him $90m over 4 years. That sets up Joel for life... and if he breaks down it doesn't completely destroy the team's future as it's unlikely we are going to be at our prime for a championship before then anyway.

I wonder if Embiid will set a precedent by signing a good deal for the team. For example, Durant says he will take a discount to keep the Warriors core together. If the team gives a fair deal but at a discount than they can keep or get better players.

Nah. Holmes is a PF honestly. You must start Saric this season at the least, off talent alone. Have to put the best players on the floor imo.
