Re: Wizards Summer League/Training Camp thread
I know Ochefu is listed at 6'11", but man he looks and plays like he's 6'9" or 6'10". Did he take a quick trip into space before his official measurement?

Re: Wizards Summer League/Training Camp thread
I like Kris Jenkins from what I've seen.
He has high character, is coachable, can hit the three, and post up.
Of all the players brought in I was most excited about Marcus Keene because of his high scoring average, but I think Jenkins has the best shot to make the team of them all.
He needs work as they all do but he strikes me as being the closest thing to pro-ready.
He does not appear to be the defensive liability that he is being made out to be. Definitely better than Bogdanovic. Perhaps shedding ten to fifteen pounds over time helps him gain quickness, but from what I saw he has active enough hands and good enough lateral movement to bother perimeter players and smaller PF's. Definitely a willing defender. You can not teach that.
He has good enough handles, nothing mind-blowing, comparable to maybe Glen Rice Jr. or slightly less than Bradley Beal's earlier on in his career.
Has good basketball IQ. Was praised by his coach for his intelligence and having the ability to either play or defend multiple positions.
Is also a very good free throw shooter.

I mean if he can be glenn rice with a decent character he could be a star. The difference between his D issues and a guy like bogz is its his physical ability and weight that keeps him from being a decent defender, not his ability, skill or willingness. Bogz doesn't have the IQ or the willingness. This guy just needs to hit the gym and get on a good diet plan. Honestly if they preform the way they are supposed to I look for Young(total under the radar PF prospect), robinson(young raw athletic, big 3 and D potential) and jenkins (big time shooter potential) to make the team. If robinson went back and had a good senior campaign he could be a first round early second round pick next year. If young put up those numbers in a bigger program he could have been a late first first early second this year, jenkins to me should have been a mid second but has some issues with weight and defence and the last few weeks of the season hurt him. I think these are three good young possibly NBA caliber guys who, are definitely nice grabs. Just like I think Ochifu and Mac were decent grabs last year, I think Mac had late first potential and Ochifu could have been a second rounder for sure, IMO. Im not turning this into an EG defence but I at least appreciate that someone one the team is doing home work and trying to get guys on the back end like this.

I think Ochifu, deserves a chance to develop. he was not given much of a chance to play in summer league last year, and obviously behind Gortat, smith, morris, porter when he played the 4 and mahinmi when healthy and nicholson while he was here and brooks pension to play who he wants to play when he wants to play them he did not have the chance, Lets give the kid a chance and see what he can do cuz maybe he will surprise us.

I just don't see it. He doesn't have the lateral quickness and isn't going to be much of a defender, even if he loses 15 pounds. That's why he wasn't drafted. Can he make a team if he shoots light out? Have to root for a local guy but I would have said the same thing about Melo Trimble. Defense and lack of quickness is going to be a problem for both.

Definitely hope they sign Beachem -- got to see whether this guy is what you say he is, nat!

I don't know why he went undrafted but I would've assumed it was because of a lack of the measurables looked for to play at both forward positions.
I don't see his defense or lateral movement as being horrible, we'll just have to disagree there.

I hear you, but at some point we're gonna have to get a GM with some confidence in evaluating talent. I don't believe Grunfeld is confident that he can pick out less heralded players with real potential from the bunch.

Here is a scouting report from DX
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kris-Jenkins-64110/
At first glance, Jenkins also known as Big Smoove has an unorthodox physical profile for an NBA prospect. For one, Jenkins is a 6'6 combo forward with average length and a stocky 240-pound frame. Jenkins is a below average athlete,as well not particularly quick or explosive, despite displaying quite a bit of savvy at times to overcome these limitations.
Jenkins guards perimeter and post players in Villanova's small ball lineup, and will likely continue to do so as a senior. Unfortunately, his subpar physical profile makes it difficult to project him defensively at the next level at either forward position. He struggles to stay in front of quicker wings due to his below average lateral quickness, and lacks the length to disrupt passing lanes. Furthermore, he is likely neither strong nor long enough to make a consistent impact in the NBA post. Despite his physical limitations, he is a consistently engaged defender with solid fundamentals and rarely quit on plays, ultimately playing a key role on one of NCAA's top defensive team

I've read this already, I think you could play him as a SG off the bench primarily and let him take advantage of his shooting and size/ post up game against guards.
If paired with Bogdanovic, no one's convincing me that Jenkins isn't the better perimeter and overall defender of the two on the court.
I never said Jenkins was an elite athlete able to match elite atlhleticism, I said his defense isn't horrible and suggest this lateral movement is good enough to be effective.
He could be no worse than Bogdanovic defensively.

Kris Jenkins has no chance whatever to play in the NBA. He'll showcase himself & presumably get a job playing somewhere overseas.
But, Devin Robinson has the potential to be an NBA player. Still, when a guy with his physical attributes & jumping ability & a 39% 3-point % gets projected @51 & then drops & goes undrafted, you know scouts are seeing some problems. Watch the DR video analysis -- start with the weaknesses video -- http://www.draftexpress.com/video/12032/ -- then watch the strength video -- http://www.draftexpress.com/video/12825/ -- & they jump out at you.
On the other hand, he has a lot of positives, looks to be a terrific kid, & I'd say he has a pretty nice upside. If he shows promise in SL -- & I think it's likely he will -- I'd keep him on the team.
We have a guy a lot like Robinson: his name is Chris McCullough. They are the same age. They were Freshmen the same year. McCullough was drafted at the end of R1 after a single year, & he hasn't shown he can play in the NBA. Robinson came out after his Junior year & went undrafted.
That should provide some perspective.

It really bothers me that Kentucky , at team known for big man development could not get this kid moving and get him minutes. hes perfect for a G league contract, why not 19 7'0 sure, but I doubt he makes the team or plays much in summer league, I mean Ochifu is going to be playing center for the most part and Chris and Michael and going to be getting most of the burn at pf. Hopefully Ochifu balls out for a few games and they see enough of him and let the kid play to see what they have.

The guy I see in those highlights is under-sized, under-athletic, and under-skilled for the NBA. He's not a pick and roll threat, he's not an above-the-rim finisher, and he can't spread the floor. I can only see two paths for him to becoming a viable NBA bench player: a) attend the Garrett Temple School of Improved Athleticism and transform himself from a slow plodder into a big with reasonably average NBA athleticism, or b) get extremely skilled extremely quickly. And he'd have to be *extremely* skilled: oafish bigs with skills simply can't survive in this league, as we learned last year with Nicholson. Now, Ochefu's a little more spry than Nicholson (who's as athletic as Sam Jackson in Black Snake Moan) -- but he's not *much* more spry. So, unless he transforms his body, I think he better update his passport and prepare to see the world.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Isaac Humphries is enormous -- that's a good start. You can't teach "enormous." Unfortunately he may lack some other desirable qualities which you can't teach.
Still -- enormous & only 19: definitely worth signing!

Pretty pathetic that some of us are talking about Kris Jenkins as our best hope for a rookie to make the team. If there were 4 rounds in the NBA draft, I doubt he would have been picked. That's an indication of how talented I think he is.

He definitely made a mistake going to Ky. You wonder what kind of player he could have been had he gone to a lesser school like a Md. Could use a year in the weight room redefining his body.

Actually, I think most here see Devin Robinson and/or Michael Young as our best hope as rookies. Not Jenkins.
