Allen is so patient and calm with bodies aroung him at the rim. hesitates, takes a dribble if needed. smooth touch with either hand at the rim. dunks when he should lays it in when he should. really imprssive ball skills as far as finsihing, dribbling within 8 feet. stands out so much on film in that regard. its not just catching lobs. he knowns how to get the ball to the rim

Tyson Chandler was no. 2 pick for the same reason Kwame Brown went 1 and Eddie Curry went 4 - HS players were all the rage and everyone was looking for the next Shaq or Duncan. It was also a pretty crap draft that year.

As for why Allen fell in this year's draft I think it's a few factors that we've all heard in the "negatives" of his scouting reports. He's an unfinished product who didn't have dominant production and some question how much he loves basketball. Also, and possibly because of the 2001 draft and others like it, the trend since has been to go away from young bigs that need a lot of development and the center position has become de-emphasized. So add all that up with what appears to have been a deep draft and we got a guy who has a lot of tools.

i honestly dont think him falling had anything to do with him as a player.... i think it had more to do with teams not needing a center.... its the same reason it was so hard to trade brook lopez. not many teams have a big gap at center and if you look at the centers taken ahead of patton they are more guys who project to be PFs (Bam, DJ) or are high ceiling projects (
Patton/Giles)

Cool, interesting that Bam, Patton and Giles are lower in the Draftexpress mock draft but got drafted before him.

Bam is a PF... and will play next to whiteside.

Giles has #1 pick talent. he was a risk/reward pick

Patton has a higher offensive ceiling.

there just werent alot of teams who needed a center and the ones that did seemed to go with guys who can shoot or have higher offensive ceilings

Seems like Patton was really the dream pick, but if you guys had the choice between Allen and Giles, which would it have been?

After seeing Allen speak in the press conference, and looking at his elite combine numbers (especially speed), and seeing videos of him playing, I am very excited about him. I'm also impressed by Marks and how the management team finds value in so many ways.

Looking forward to the FA period next week, and then starting to predict win-loss records.

Right? Fluidity, a little Brook Lopez in his game but ALSO will not hesitate to thunder dunk as needed. (Booker can coach him up a bit on that too)

He'll need time to bulk up and adjust to the NBA, but he'll impress fans enough in preseason and will probably put in AT LEAST 10-15 mpg out of the gate if not 15-20. I think Atkinson really does feel like he won the lottery on this one.

As impressed as I am by how the FO finds good talent and value, I am equally impressed by how they play their hand. We don't get Allen if we give Lakers pick 22 instead of pick 27. So many good decisions by Marks in last year .

With Tim Duncan comparisons being floated, Jarrett signed with same agents as Tim Duncan (and also Grant Hill, J Lin)

I think Marks might have a legitimate steal on his hands.

This is the player, at least from what I've seen, is the guy we've been clamoring for at center all season. I think our future is brighter than people realize.

This offseason has been an A+ for the Nets. Literally everything that could have happened right for us has happened.

Patience, patience, patience guys... Allen has all the tools you could hope for in a modern big but we can't expect him to dominate from day 1. All I ask for is effort and hard work and the rest will come.

He reminds me of Marcus Camby with a smoother offensive game but that's absolute best case scenario. We need to give him 2-3 years at least before we can make a proper assessment IMO.

Also, I really hope he keeps the fro-n-stash

When I first saw his highlight clips, I thought he was a bit lead-footed but after seeing his combine results he can definitely play much bigger than his 6'11 frame. I like his positive demeanor too, think he's going to be a great fit for this team.

Still pondering how we got Allen, ... it's probably bc of the Nets being able to wait on his development

Like the Vertical guys said in their draft comments Allen has incredible promise.

But he will take a while to develop his full potential

But teams don't usually have the time to wait - look at the teams that picked centers ahead of BKN - Portland (Zach Collins) Heat (Bam Adebayo) Wolves (Patton) - the Kings have time and took Giles but they are Kings

Bam might not have a good jumper yet but he is NBA ready strength and body wise

Collins and Patton might need work in bulking up but they have good offensive skills already incl good outside shots

The PFs that went ahead of Allen (Markkanen, Wilson, Leaf, John Collins) also are further along in development than him on offense

Nets though can afford to wait on Jarrett Allen's development - In fact it gives Kenny a chance to really mold him

As long as Nets are in the hard position they're in, it's good to see them being able to reap some of rewards of this situation

Nets more than happy that Jarrett Allen fell to them
http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/nets/nets-more-than-happy-that-jarrett-allen-fell-to-them-1.13760108

Marks said he explored trading up for him but was “thrilled” that it wasn’t necessary.

Sounds good
Atkinson said Allen’s shooting fundamentals show he eventually can be stretched out to develop a three-point shot.

Beyond basketball, Jarrett said he is a computer geek who got that interest from his father, who works for Dell. Leonard Allen emphasized interests beyond basketball to his son, which is why he developed a more well-rounded outlook before recognizing in high school that his hoops talent was elite.

No wonder he sounds like Lin! (his father is a computer guy I think?)

Brook is a nerd and sounds nothing like JLin LOL

just a weird coincidence

Sounds like Marks was PREPARED to buy up for Allen, but in the end, the Don't Spend Money! contingent here was more than pleased he didn't have to

Don't spend a DAMN DIME.

I keep telling you guys, let these eggs hatch. We have some young guys who all have upside.

Allen is going to be a stud in 3 seasons. i think people have no understanding about what has happened in the last several days. the Nets are going up.

It's definitely just a weird coincidence but I was referring to the fact that both their fathers work in the computer field.

I laughed when during the draft broadcast they cited one of his accomplishments was building his own computer which he'll bring with him to Brooklyn. Even looks a bit like the character from the IT Crowd :)
