...it’s better for almost everyone involved if Millsap and/or the Hawks decided to move on, even though it may hurt.
Here’s why: The Hawks are stuck in no-mans-land with their current core...
Atlanta is a pretty good/average team but not bad enough to net themselves a decent draft pick. They’re not a championship team nor look anything close to the sort. If Millsap stays, Atlanta’s ceiling for the next 3-4 years is this: a slightly above average regular season team that could make the playoffs but will ultimately lose in Round 1, maybe Round 2 if you’re lucky.
The Hawks were incredibly bad when Paul Millsap was sidelined with injury for a spell near the end of the season and went 3-10 in his absence. If Millsap walks, it would give the Hawks the opportunity they need to change directions, a change that has been looming on the horizon for a while now. It would give the Hawks an opportunity to re-arm in the draft and potentially draft a player the Hawks could build around.

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
Trav has gone from subtly hinting to outright telling us...
“We are going to make Paul our best offer,” Schlenk said this week. “Will he have better offers? I don’t know...The reality is, he might get better offers than we can make him.”
Millsap led the Hawks in scoring at 18.1 points per game last season. He was also second on the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and a top defender. In determining Millsap’s overall value, there are several intangibles that must be considered. Millsap was a leader and team spokesman on many occasions. His involvement in the issue between Dwight Howard and Dennis Schroder was important to keeping team chemistry in the midst of a playoff run.
It's a necessary approach that makes it all the more likely Millsap leaves.
And it's the primary reason we should have traded him last summer.

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
I think its still possible to help out Millsap and the Hawks. The only team that can out right sign Millsap for the money he wants is Denver and Miami, but both teams don't seem interested in Sap.
Hawks can still help out Sap and get him to a good team like the Blazers or Pistons by doing a sign and trade after the draft, with the Hawks taking on a few bad contract and who ever they get at the 12th or 15th pick.

I like this idea a lot.
I do hear there could be mutual interest between Millsap and Denver.
I guess he grew up in the area, considers it a second home and views them as a young, talented team on the rise.

Hawks can still help out Denver if they want to get Sap and still resign Gallinari . #13 and Faried, or #13 and Chandler for Millsap.
This would give Denver a front court of Jokic, Sap, Galli.

The pick in a s&t is risky because we have to be sure we like whoever they take as there would be no guarantee with Millsap.

It's not risky, because its a free pick, and at worst case scenario, the Hawks get a bust on a rookie scale contract.

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
Does the trade of Dwight Howard for table scraps guarantee that Millsap leaves in Free Agency?
You might be on to something:

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
Multiple reports surfaced on Wednesday night that NBA teams have been informed that the 2017-18 salary cap is now projected to be $99 million.
That is a $5 million increase from last season but a $2 million decrease than the once projected $101 million.
Max deal for Millsap now stands at 5 years, $200,970,000.
With Millsap making $42.9 million in year four and $45.7 million in year five.

Seriously, why did we not trade this guy a year ago?

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
Spurs management approaching the LaMarcus Free Agency a year early...the way Atlanta should have addressed it with Millsap...and Horford:
How did we make the same mistake two summers in a row?
ESPN"He can opt out in a year," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford told ESPN last month. "There's a point in time that we'll have to address what's next. At that time, we'll deal with it. As you build a team, you make decisions along the way."
For the Spurs, working to consummate a trade now is more advantageous than potentially losing Aldridge after next season with no compensation in return.
How did we make the same mistake two summers in a row?

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
AJC...the high number of young players that will be coming means chemistry and veteran leadership is even more crucial than before for the sake of development.
Paul Millsap would be great for that role, but the Hawks are not going to give max money for four seasons (let alone five) to a 32-year-old, just so he can be a steadying influence.
Millsap has been the Hawks’ best player. But that doesn’t mean he’s a building block for the future. If he re-signs as a free agent, it will be because he took less – a lot less – than he could have received on the open market. That just doesn’t seem likely.

Re: The case AGAINST keeping Millsap
Desperate teams with plenty of youth, trying to compete. Sounds about right.
NOTE: Millsap in Minny makes them (IMHO) the second most talented team in the league. Not second best, but second most talented.
I'd love to see that happen and would root for that team all season long.
Add'l NOTE: By year 4, each of those teams will regret the contract.
Add'l Add'l NOTE: If we can move Millsap for Gorgui Dieng, Trav Schlenk will have earned my undying loyalty as a Hawks fan.

Minny has to cut several contracts though, unless we can do a sign & trade with then

I'd consider a sign and trade if we can get Gorgui Dieng.
Dieng and Taurean are the blue collar forwards this team has needed for years.
I'd even give them back their draft pick plus the CLE pick if they included Rubio. (Who I believe has more trade value.)

See I played around with the idea of sending Rubio to Utah and picking up Favors, Deng, and Exum with Sap going to Minny. We just make up the value with our 1st round picks we have, if we need to(Minny first, Cleveland first). Also included Baze going to a team with cap space for one of our own first round picks. That gives us a running mate in Exum next to Dennis, and young, experienced, & talented frontcourt players to play with Collins in Favors and Dieng. Match THJ.
We could roll out:
PG- Schro
SG- Exum
SF- Prince
PF- Favors
C- Dieng
Bench: THJ(6th man), Dorsey, Moose, Collins, Plumlee, Marco
More than likely lands us in the lottery, but there's plenty of potential and upside including extending Favors, while being young. I could get behind taking a step back to hope that core becomes the next big thing in Atlanta and in the league. Exum is a guy I have had my eye on for a while.
