Is Daryl Morey the best GM?

Post#1 » by wfiles » Wed Jun 28, 2017 8:26 pm

He was able to acquire 3 superstars in the last few years. Harden, Howard, and now Paul. There's also talks of him trading for Paul George. No other GM has been able to get superstars like Daryl Morey.

His team had not won any rings. Not even reached the finals. Enough said.

Howard hadn't been a superstar since his short and terrible stint in LA.

Harden was him taking advantage of Oklahoma for refusing to shell out the big bucks. Can't ever refute it wasn't a great trade for them.

Paul was out the door, this is the Clippers' way of saving a little face and getting something when they could've easily gotten nothing.

Harden used the "master ball" to catch CP3

By this measure, wouldnt it be Riley? He build the Zo team, then the Shaq team (after drafting Wade) , then the LeBron team.

He has to have at least a Finals appearance to be considered the "best GM" imo.

The GB has been taken over by teenage homers today.

Morey is more a great 2k gm than real life gm, meaning he is super at acquiring talent, but not so super at assembling functional teams.

Spurs GM because he knows how to build/gel an even better team with only one superstar at a time. Also Myers because he's got 4 stars (If you wanna count Dwight, then Klay and Draymond are both better than he is)

Morey's a top 5 GM the last decade for sure though.

I suspect OP is reverse trolling just to make the Rockets look bad, or gathering funny memes? Stop.

Morey is not the best GM period.

He is one of the GMs I respect the most because under his watch this team never tanked over the last decade. Going deep in the playoffs or not, we always stayed competitive. While some other teams saw GS and Cavs and went **** it no point competing lets just prepare for the future, Morey constantly goes for the home run even if there is only a 10-20% of chance beating this current Warriors team. He is taking that chance. I think we need more GMs like him, then league need more GMs like him.

It's not only that he gets things done, it's how he gets it done too. There was quite a bit of shennanigans that went on behind the scenes to get the CP3 trade done. 11 players were involved to get this trade done. Count 'em, 11 people plus a pick and cash. Even I don't quite understand what happened in totality.

Chris Paul
Patrick Beverley
Sam Dekker
Lou Williams
Montrezl Harrell
Kyle Wiltjer
DeAndre Liggins (from CLE)
Darrun Hillard (from DET)
Houston’s 2018 first round pick, top 3 protected
And $661K in cash to cover Paul’s trade bonus
Ryan Kelly (from ATL)
Tim Quarterman (from POR)
Shawn Long (from PHI)

https://www.thedreamshake.com/2017/6/28/15888292/houston-rockets-will-consummate-chris-paul-trade-with-clippers-now-james-harden

All of these players have non-guaranteed contracts for the 2017 - 2018 season. Meaning they can be traded to the Clippers as a half-a-million cap filler to make the trade work. Then L.A. can unceremoniously cut the players they receive.

To make the trade work from a salary and roster perspective Houston included Harrell and Wiltjer, who were not discussed in original trade outlines. Dropping Wiltjer in at the last minute likely avoids a roster hangup. Any NBA team can only hold 20 contracts at this time. Sending Kelly and Quarterman may have put LA over that threshold.

On the whole this is a Bond-villain level of shrewdness from Morey because starting July 1st non-guaranteed contracts will have no cap value in future trades under the new collective bargaining agreement. Using Liggins and Hillard to get this done is an exploitation, plain and simple. The rules will forbid him from doing exactly what he’s doing in a few days.

You know you can do something similiar for every GM in the league right?

They take advantage of circumstances..

Every team with room was lining up to sign Howard (including GSW) so spare us the Howard wasn't a good catch stuff.

This is about as spot on as it gets

I actually think the Rockets parted with a lot of minor assets that could have been useful this year to get CP3, and may have to pay him a crazy amount so that he's not a rental. So I dont think he's the best GM but he's definitely one of the better ones, and is also one of the most creative/aggressive ones.

No, now if he lands paul george with the garbage they have on that roster outside harden and cp3 i might change my tune but im sure at least 25 teams can offer better packages so i doubt it
