Ummmm yeah just no to Blake. No

Griffin is such a good FA on paper. He could instantly turn the Heat into the 3rd best team in the East and would pair well with Whiteside.

Those injuries though just can't be looked over.

Of course they can.

We have cap space and we need to use it on a whale, even if that whale has an injured fin. Eventually the fin will be fine and we'll be balling.
I remember when the Dolphins were perennial contenders

No way I'd take him over JJ. JJ is impactful on both ends.

Edit: Plus he has your back:

I think in the end. The pull of Brad Stevens connection with his former player and recruit is going to be too much for us to overcome. Boston players already seem to be recruiting him hard with IT and Horford following him on instagram and Smart throwing praise and pointing out the Stevens connection at his camp yesterday.. He has zero player/coach connections down here other then his agent. I'm thinking the meeting with us is for courtesy. Just like the Durant meeting last year.

I pulled this caption form an article during allstar reunion.

That growth, both in terms of his game and the attention that came with that improvement, has led him to being an NBA all-star, an undeniable acknowledgement that he is among the best in the NBA. And making it all that much sweeter is that he’s getting to enjoy it for the first time with Stevens, a man whose role in Hayward’s life and ascension to this point should not be understated. While Hayward acknowledges the role Stevens played in his steady improvement as a player, the role Stevens played in his life was even more significant in his growth as a person.

“For him to get a chance to be among the elite players in the game is a special opportunity that was earned,” Stevens said. “It’s earned with your individual success and what your team is able to do. Their team is having such great success. I’m happy that he gets a chance to experience this, and that they look like a team that’s going to make a deep run in the playoffs.”

To hear those words is not at all surprising to Hayward.

“He’s such a good coach and such a great guy and mentor to me,” Hayward said. “I’m happy we’re here.”

Idk if its the belief that Griffin won't come here or people really would take JJ over him

So if we meet with Gay, would we take him to the steakhouse in Miami like we would do with Blake and Hayward or would we just order some Jimmy John's?

I fail to see what makes Blake more appealing. His numbers don't result in meaningful victories and he plays no defense, plus he has a history with with injuries. I don't see him and Whiteside meshing very well.

Gay is making teams fly to Texas to meet with him. Pretty pathetic of teams having to fly to him if you ask me. I think he's on the bottom of the radar at this point.

I like JJ as much as the next guy but he isnt better than Blake Griffin.

I don't think it will matter anyway as I think Blake stays now that CP3 is gone.

No matter what else I hope we resign JJ.
I don't see Hayward as a difference maker...
seems like next season is still about collecting assets. ... :blank:

I think he is the plan B with the leftover money if we bring back Waiters and JJ. Hes an injury risk but can REALLY play.

This team would be exciting as hell in our system:

Dragic/TJ/ JRich
Waiters/ Ellington
Gallo/McGruder/Winslow
Bam/JJ
Hassan/Reed?

Would love Gallo. His skill set fits in perfect with what we are trying to do. Feels a lot more realistic then the others.

I understand Injury concerns but I'd take 60 games + playsoff with Blake than 70+ games with JJ.
Blake is an overall way better offense player than JJ and yes that includes passing he'll fit fine next to Hassan on offense.
Blake gets a bad wrap on Defense but the numbers show that JJ and Blake Griffin are pretty much equals on that front.

Defense rebound % JJ: 16.6% Blake: 20.2%
Defensive Win Shares JJ: 3.8 Blake 2.4
Defense Box +/- JJ: 2.8 Blake: 1.3
Block% JJ: 3.2% Blake: 0.9% (only category JJ got him beat by alot)
Steal% JJ: 1.8% Blake: 1.4%

Brooklyn will probably throw a ton of money at him. I think he likes the New York area and has ties to coach Kenny Atkinson from Knick days.

Fit matters.... Blake is not fit here...
I think last year proved it. Fit matters...
I hope we continue to build on last year...
I don't see Blake as one who would.
And I am on the fence with Hayward too..

I think an overstated problem is using our capspace on JJ and Dion if we miss out and becoming a treadmill team.

The key is to have contributors worth their contracts. E.g. Crowder is an asset for Boston because he is a starter on a good contract. Dragic is an asset for us because he is a semi-star on a good contract. These guys are positive assets and are as good or better than cap space. I guarantee you that if we wanted someone tomorrow and were willing to move Dragic, we could either dump him or pick up a pick in the process at this point.

So as long as we sign Dion and JJ to at or below market deals (which they seem amenable to) and they produce in the vein of last seasons contributions, they are assets that a team will want to pick up. There is a price point at which either is probably a risk but at 8-10 for Dion and 10-12 or so for JJ is asset territory to me. Dion carries a little more risk to me because of injuries.

Part of my trepidation with Hayward and Griffin is they are asset risks at 30 mill a year. I.e. if they don't pan out completely, we would need to expend assets to move them later. Blake worries me most because injuries and defense are major risks. Hayward seems a safer bet, but I do have slight Szcerbiaks about him

If we lose out on the whales, I would be fine bringing back our own players and adding a guy like Rudy Gay.

Pg: Dragic / TJ
Sg: Waiters / Richardson
Sf: Winslow / McGruder
Pf: Gay / J. Johnson
Cc: Whiteside / Bam

My problem with this, however, is it severely limits our ceiling IMO. We cannot push past the second round with that group unless Waiters suddenly becomes the player that he believes he is.

Return to Miami Heat
