Re: Is Daryl Morey the best GM?
i'm actually interested to see how David Griffen does wherever he ends up. Chris Grant set him up with tons of cap space and assets that he did a good job of turning into a championship team. He definitely overpaid a few players but I think that just goes along with the pressure of running a LeBron James team. But the trades and signings he made to fill roster holes were generally great.
I would love to see DG run a team without a LeBron James sized shadow looking over his back.
As for best in the league? I'd go with Myers with Pat Riley right up there

GSW: Bob Myers
SAS: Popovich/Buford
BOS: Ainge (that fleecing of the Brooklyn lol)
CLE: Griffin (gone now)
MIA: Riley/ Elisburg
are all better.
i would say he's on the same level as Ujiri, Hammond for now.

Or maybe it was Hinkie who was secretly pulling the strings in the shadows and using Morey as a mouthpiece?

he plays the game and is aggressive and relentless which i admire, but at some point the advanced statistics and trade wins have to start producing meaningful playoff wins for him to be considered a top GM, the rockets didnt look like a contender in the playoffs last year, and it remains to be seen how they'll look with cp3 and harden.

Re: Is Daryl Morey the best GM?
When he puts together a championship team then we can start asking that question, when he's built a mini dynasty then you can debate the question but for now he's just another GM that seems capable of putting together amazing deals now and then that end up not being what the team actually needed to get over the hump

Lawson played for the minimum... not much rish
Jsmoove was an embarrassment, especially the second time around. Lawson cost real assets to acquire... there's more than one meaning to the term "expensive" in this context. Not mentioning the horrible extensions Morey handed out to McHale and Brewer (and Anderson, for that matter) was just me being nice. Not mentioning that he peddled away both Nic Batum and Chandler Parsons for peanuts shortly after they'd been drafted was also me understating the point, but if you want to throw down for Morey, there's a lot of his record which is not pretty, at all.
No one knows what would have happened with Dwight on another team, but what actually happened in Houston was that he was surrounded by poor shooters and given a terrible coach who couldn't get him to play efficiently and instead indulged his worst instincts and allowed him to go on demanding touches and acting like a pre-teen. That inexplicably toxic locker room which caused the Dwight Rockets to implode? Morey put that group of puds together.
Like I said, he's a great 2k gm.
You are really embarrassing yourself in this thread. Dwight's first 2 years, Houston won 54 and 56 games and made it to the conference finals. Wasn't exactly the train-wreck you are describing.
Also Dwight's struggles had more to do with his physical decline (in particular his back) than any of the other random stuff you posted. Keep fishing though.

The Houston Rockets have a single conference finals win...as in one game...in Morey's entire 11 season tenure. **** a championship...he hasn't even fielded a contender.
The toxic nature of the Houston locker room was well-known, and ultimately Morey was at fault for putting that group of people together. They were a sad-sack circus...with Dwight egging, J Smoove smooving, Corey Brewer being bad at basketball and Harden setting turnover records, all while folding up like a cheap tent against the first real contender they met.
They were less than the sum of their parts, which is precisely the criticism of Morey's record.

Would I rather have him than Myers?
No thanks
Would I take him if I was GM-less?
Yes thanks - Few i'd rather have
For those who question Myers. Seems general consensus is Jordan Bell is a steal. So he's 1/1 post-West right?

Talk about overrated. He has faced 0 adversity as an executive... he inherited a fantastic pick and two future stars just entering their prime in Curry and Thompson.. who blossomed into great players (lucky for him)
People act like he built the franchise from scratch... he inherited a great situation.
Know what Morey inherited? The hobbled corpses of T-Mac and Yao and some spare tires. No future stars... no good prospects... no good picks... and he has managed what he has had pretty well. Congratulations to Bob Myers for inheriting a team with two young emerging stars ... He drafted a future max level player in the 2nd round? Cool, so did Morey.
Just looking at end results is of course ridiculous... you can only do so much with the hand you're dealt. Morey has done A LOT with absolute garbage.

Re: Is Daryl Morey the best GM?
He is a very good GM. Its difficult to build a very good team without tanking or having much assets.
He didn't have the luxury or starting with good, young players like other GMs did. He didn't start off with a Steph Curry and Klay.
He literally had the corpses of some washed up stars and virtually no assets. Thats more impressive than what Myers managed.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Re: Is Daryl Morey the best GM?
I haven't read through this thread, Im sure it's full with unbiased and intelligent takes. Anyways, Morey can't be considered as "the best GM". He just can't be right now. But, he is a top 5-6 GM in the NBA. If he get's Houston a title, that argument becomes a lot easier to make. Either way, Im glad he's my favorite team's GM.

Re: Is Daryl Morey the best GM?
Myers has shown he's an upper echelon GM, but without Jerry's pick's, there's no Championships, Finals appearances, MVP's, cheap ringchasers, or KD. But Myers has still done a really good job in his tenure as GM.

You make it sounds like Morey just got hired by the Rockets. He's been in charge for 11 years, he got his franchise player James Harden 5 years ago who Rockets fans believed should had been 2 time MVP, and Morey still haven't transformed Rockets into serious title contender.
You said how lucky Myers was inherited Curry and Thompson while drafted Green. He took over Warriors 5 years ago, same time when Rockets got their franchise player.
He signed Curry to one of the best bargain extension of all time , he traded for Iguodala and Bogut , he sacked Mark Jackson for Steve Kerr and of course he signed Durant .
Myers transformed Warriors into one of the greatest team of all time in 5 years , that's not LUCKY !!

Not true. The beginning of the 2008-09 season when the Rockets acquired Ron Artest many people had the Rockets as contenders. The only problem was that year McGrady completely fell off a cliff and Yao Ming got injured in the playoffs. That core never recovered.

The year before the imploded they made it to the conference finals, so focus on a 1 year of Dwight's tenure if ridiculous. Josh Smith played 23 games and was signed for the vet min. Corey Brewer wasn't even a starter. So I'm not even sure what you are talking about. The problem with Houston during Dwight years was a) coaching b) Dwight's physical decline. All the reports of the broken locker room were completely overstated and not the reason they lost.
A GMs job is acquire enough talent to give the coach a chance to compete, and that's what he has done for over decade. But I'm just a Rockets who has followed the team for 25+ years. You obviously know more about them than I do.
