If the Wiz trade for George and don't have a guarantee from him that he'll re-sign...

Would rather free up as much money as possible and make a play for Cousins next year.
Wall/Beal/George/Cousins can challenge G-State.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXIII
If Hayward stays in Utah and Blake goes to Phoenix, then the Celtics aren't intimidating at all and the Cavs are a year away from possibly breaking apart--I would do the Otto sign and trade + protected first with no worries and go all in.
If George leaves then I trade John for picks and get ready to rebuild. It's a huge gamble, but what sways me is the idea that John will probably want out if we don't make a big move this year.
Smart thing before doing this deal would be to wait a week where you get more information. John will have a chance to sign the extension, Hayward will have made his decision, etc.

No way to free up the money but a sign and trade of Cousins for Gortat/Mahinmi/Oubre would not be a bad combination if the Cousins experiment fails this year

Shades of Rip for Stackhouse. Of course, the Wizards will do it.

I'd do it without the guarantee. You have to take a chance in this league. Better to have tried and failed then to lose Wall because we didn't do anything to keep him.

I'm not sure we have the assets to drop Gortat and Mahinmi and more, plus we would have to give Wall the super max and resign Paul George to a full veteran max. Only way that would work is if we use assets to dump our two centers, wall leaves money on the table, like huge money, and Paul George also leaves big money on the table

I agree that the making Wall happy part is the important part here. Also having Paul George over Otto Porter (even if he's not really better) would attract another piece to come play with a big 3

I don't like the deal, but if they can get a solid player with the MLE, that team could definitely win the east. Boston still isn't all that great, lebron is one year older, we will rely on better younger players this year.
We could sneak into the NBA finals

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXIII
Wow, that's a rather surprising snippet and big enough news for me to emerge from the summer hiatus for a post.
That idea had been posted a number of times on this board and my position was it would always be....awkward....to approach Porter about it without ticking him off and seeing him just sign an offer sheet with Brooklyn or Sacramento or whoever (and then of course we match that deal bringing Porter back which launches into awkward spin control session replete with Ernie crooning and Melaniaesque body language analysis).
I guess it would be a matter of discussing it with David Falk with a lot of posturing and code words. Falk absolutely ripped into Wall around 2011 or so and might not even like Porter on the Wizards for whatever reason (such as preferring a higher usage rate or just really liking the synergy of Porter with Monta Ellis and Al Jefferson).
Anyway, it's quite interesting though it seems like a decided long shot that anything happens.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXIII
With CP3/LeBron/Melo/Wade all free agents in 2018, I think chances are good that the Cavs as we know it will be no more very soon.
Apparently without an extension guarantee the best Boston is willing to do is Smart + Crowder + mid first

This is different. Paul George has already told Indiana he is going to LAL.
If he was on the fence, if he was not sure, if he was going to be swayed, I'd absolutely do it too. But he's dead set on becoming a free agent next summer and the incumbent team isn't going to have the typical leverage. He wants to go home.
I also don't think Wall has great recruiting skills even though he is tight with PG. I'm very pessimistic on this matter.
I'm all in for trying to get Demarcus Cousins here.

Well, this is a nice pipe dream and all, but here's to hoping Otto's agent isn't a vindictive SOB...which he has every right to be.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXIII
Well Brooklyn is the only team I know that would offer max. Would I rather play in Indy or Brooklyn? Brooklyn, particularly with D'Angelo there now. But Otto is a low key guy so I don't know.
The thing is, he'd be risking getting moved to someplace else down the road because the Wiz wouldn't let him just walk. They'd keep him, the George deal wouldn't happen and they'd look to move him later.

Hated that trade more than any other deal we've ever made (at the time) because it was a selfish move by Michael Jordan and Rip was a rare quality draft pick. The main difference between that deal and if this trade was ever made (highly doubtful) is that Stackhouse is not Paul George.

Agree completely. And let's be honest, Porter is never going to become a huge impact guy. He disappears too much for my liking.
Awesome glue guy, but George is worth the gamble. Also, Wizards may simply not feel Porter is worth the max. I know I don't.

There is 0 chance we lose Wall. Now that he is an All-NBA player, we can offer him so much more money than anybody else.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXIII
I am not in favor of this trade. George is better than Porter, but not by too much. The positives don't outweigh the negatives:
Positives:
- George is better than Porter
Negatives:
- George can leave in one year.
- Porter hasn't peaked, he will improve over the next two years. George has peaked. In 2 years, the difference between the two players will be even smaller. And there is a chance that Porter will actually be better than George.
- Porter would be signed long term to $22-25M a year. If George is retained, he'll cost $30-35M a year. That $10-12M a year difference could mean another quality player sacrificed.
- We lose a future 1st round pick.
