Pistons might dodge bullet on KCP contract offer.

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Sat Jul 1, 2017 12:47 pm

The two biggest threats to offer KCP a contract were NJ and Philly. NJ traded into Russell who they want to commit to a starting role. Philly is appearing to want to keep enough 2018 space for two MAX contracts to add to their young core (they might actually be a good FA destination by next year if their young core stays healthy this year as they are loaded with young guys on cheap rookie deals). For NJ Otto Porter makes a lot more sense given their lineup. For Philly we just need to hope that JJ Redick agrees to a huge one year deal with them.

He is a key player for us so many other teams may also be fearful if giving him an early offer and then having to wait it out for us to potentially match. Even other teams with room aren't seemingly mentioning KCP as a backup plan at the moment

Redick is looking to get paid. It will take a two year deal to get him to go to Philly though, but I've seen 2yrs 40M+, where Phila overpays on money to get less years.

Rumor is the Nets meeting with Ingles today. Appears they are targeting him as a Vet presence and a cheaper alternative to KCP.

If Phila and Brooklyn get Redick and Ingles respectively and no bidders on KCP what do we offer that is both fair and reasonable? I say the money is $18M per season, and ideally only four years, maybe making it a PO to get four years instead of five agreement from the KCP camp.

$72M over 4 yrs, (4th year player option)

I say that's about right and I would be ok coming out of this with him on that deal.

Also not a guard. Like I've said before Caldwell-Pope to Brooklyn after acquiring Russell doesn't make sense to me.

Philadelphia on the other hand might be a problem if they don't get Reddick. It sounds like the 76ers are intent on adding a free agent and if they are going to do it anywhere it's at shooting guard. Their frontcourt is loaded and now point guard is set with Fultz and McConnell. Philadelphia has some options at the two as well, but they can't be particularly happy with that spot if they're thinking about spending the kind of money that has been mentioned.

I still feel like somebody will offer him something big eventually.

This is a universe where Jrue Holiday can get 25 mill per. I think its time to abandon all hope.

I would think SVG has a line he won't cross with a contract but what this is is what scares the hell out of me.

Most of the reported deals have been much more reasonable than the past couple of years. NOP only had like 12 million in cap room to replace Jrue if he left. He was the only PG with leverage in this market.

Redick just got $23 million for one year from Philly so KCP no longer on their radar it seems.

I sorta called this on the trade board. Philly should go up to $25M for one year rather than paying for a second year to get Redick to sign.

Now we just have to worry about Brooklyn.

Hopefully Brooklyn throws a huge deal at Otto Porter. He fits better than KCP for them.

Washington could match that though.

I'd imagine they're prioritizing Porter, and we could see some development on the KCP front later on.

Yeah it's a smart move for Philly. They have money to burn this year with all their rookie deals, need a shooter/vet, and next year could be a top FA destination if this year goes well... and they'll have tons of cap space again.

Redick gets a huge deal, just has to not get hurt and can sign a longer deal next year. Or maybe he'll just keep taking these 1 year expensive rentals lol

Dude's old and gets hurt often, I think this may be his only short big deal. They only paid him because it's the Sixers and they had stupid amount of cap space.

Otherwise, interesting things starting to unfold for KCP. If we can get him under 20 mil, I think we're in great shape IMO.
