Ben Simmons isn't really going to defend point guards the entire game is he?

if you say Roco and Fultz will defend guards then just put Simmons at SF

I mean, it's all semantics to me, but I feel like the general opinion of Ben Simmons is that he is a real PG who does normal PG things during a game

I don't get the fascination on naming guys in positions. "Put Simmons at SF". What does that even mean? That he plays the 4 on offense and defense?

Just call Simmons the primary ball handler that can post up smaller opponents and will most likely guard the 3 or 4 or 5 in small ball.
Call Embiid the 5 can shoot from distance that will guard the 5.
Call Fultz a secondary ball handler that can play the 1 or 2 and guards the 1 or 2.
Call Roco the outside shooter who plays the 2 or 3 but can guard the 1, 2 or 3.
Call Saric the guy next to Embiid that will bang it in the post and become an outside threat when Simmons posts up... he will guard the 4 or a 3 in a pinch.

There we have it... 5 starters that can play and defend multiple positions.

The positions are generally only relevant for defensive assignments. Offensively, players have roles, and your smallest player doesn't have to be your distributor. Your tallest player doesn't have to be your best post-up player or rebounder. Your two guard doesn't have to be your shooter. etc.

Yes. Having the traditional sized players fill traditional roles on both ends of the court does prevent the need for cross-switching. However, Ben will initially play a traditional point on offense and guard a forward on defense. I prefer Cov defends threes, Ben fours, and Joel fives. So you really need a guy to guard twos and shoot threes to complement this starting group.

Man, I get the whole FEDS thing, but these guys need to start showing Cov some love. He's not getting benched for Dario.

Simmons at PG won't work... Can't have covington at PF... Can we?

Brett makes the lineup. These guys are squeezing names into a lineup with regard to fit.

Covington will guard the best wing. Simmons will guard the PF.

Fultz - lead and off guard/shooter/scorer
Redick - shooter, mover, floor spacer
Covington - 3 and D
Simmons - Facilitator, playmaker, shot creator
Embiid - dominator

I think the Sixers make most sense when you don't label positions with them and just go by roles.

that was perfect. at first i was trying to come up with other names other than the standard nba positions but i got stuck at embiid. dominator is perfect.

Covington is a good PF, he is surprisingly strong for his size. However, his role is best when he can use his speed and quick hands. Anyway, with all the switching, players have to be able to defend multiple positions and the Sixers have a few good ones, now.

Maybe to show how Simmons could potentially impact the Sixers in a similar fashion?
