Sign of Life in International Signing Activity

Post#481 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 6:55 pm

Given the restrictions imposed upon the Dodgers, I'm not surprised that we're not really in the running for any of the top-30-rated international prospects, but I do expect a bunch of smaller signings. Our lead international scout, Ismael Cruz, is known for doing well with the under-the-radar type signings so I'm looking forward to seeing our final haul despite not having any idea who we're targeting or even who they are right now.

Jesse Sanchez noted in his video in the MLB.com article cited below that the Bahamas and Brazil are emerging markets for baseball prospects, so I'm curious to see if have a significant presence in those territories.

I'm so glad we attacked the 2015 International deadline the way we did given the new rules have taken that advantage away from us.

Would have been perfect if the Giants didnt get butthurt and steal Lucius Fox at the 11th hour.

What About Otani?

I am too, but I am concerned how that affects our ability to go after Shohei Otani. If he wants to come over for next season and won't wait the few months, I may actually regret our 2015 activity as Otani looks to be worth our entire haul from that year's signings. That sounds a little strange given that Yadier Alvarez has such a high ceiling almost comparable to Otani's as a pitcher but it's highly doubtful that he'll ever develop the full arsenal that the Japanese phenom possesses.

Obviously, a bird in the hand is worth two in a bush, so I shouldn't really be playing the second-guessing game.

BA International Signing Tracker

Post#485 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 8:22 pm

Longenhagen mentioned in his FanGraphs article, that this year's international class is weak since scouts prefer prospects who are projected to stick at shortstop while the strength of the talent crop seems to be with outfielders. Most of the prospects may have less projectability but are supposedly more developed physically.

While more signings are sure to come, it's interesting to see the Dodgers already loading up on SS prospects with 4 commitments and 2 OFers in the fold so far.

Ben Badler, Baseball America (7/2/17)

George Heredia, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000.

Eddys Leonard DPL Profile

David Swerdloff, DPLbaseball.com (5/8/17)
Analysis: Eddys Leonard has the ability to make consistent contact with gap to gap power. His above-average speed allows him to fully utilize his contact and power giving him the ability to extend singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Combining his speed with a high baseball IQ, at 16-years-old, and you get a player who will have the ability to steal bases at every level. His speed also gives him good range at short, while his arm strength and quick hands will allow him to be an above average defender.

Amin Valdez DPL Profile

Post#488 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 9:43 pm

David Swerdloff, DPLbaseball.com (5/8/17)
Analysis: Amin Valdez is a flashy shortstop with a very quick release and soft hands. He generates effortless pop with smooth mechanics. With an immense amount of polish already in his game, he is more advanced than most middle infielders his age and even older. Expect Valdez to make an impact right away in pro ball after he signs in 2017.

Moving J2 International Signings to Separate Thread

Post#489 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 9:57 pm

Hey, guys. I'm copy-and-pasting posts regarding international signings to the 2017-18 J2 International Signings Thread so that it won't get lost in the shuffle of the season-long discussion. It will make it much easier to go back to for reference for future discussions.

Back to Bullpen After Pitching Batting Practice to Padres

Post#490 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 10:44 pm

JOrel was talking about how Maeda's approach was less aggressive and accurate. I've discussed how he needed to get his approach to MLB hitters in order and was hoping that he'd figured it out recently. His lack of control today is concerning since that normally isn't a problem for him. I wonder if there's a physical ailment hindering him given that his medical records had classified red flags when we signed him. It'd also be troubling if there is a mental block given that he's a veteran professional pitcher albeit coming over from NPB.

Donkey Punched

Post#491 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 2, 2017 11:38 pm

Arguably the best team in baseball couldn't even get one of our players voted in as a starter for the NL All-Stars. I strongly suspect Cozart's voting totals were boosted because of the story of teammate Votto's promise to buy him a donkey should he be named to the team.

^Brandon Morrow is doing fine, even with yesterday's 2 runs that he was responsible for.

his WHIP and FIP is looking incredible so far this season. per 9, he is currently matching his career high of 10.4K to go with .5 WHIP and 1.2 FIP.
ehhhhh f it.

How has this organization not moved on from a guy like Van Slyke yet?

It's unbelievable
