We did that last year - and failed.

Ugh why do I feel we are being used by Hayward so he can stay in Utah, get max money and get a sister wife?

Hayward doesn't need any other team to help him get max money from Utah.

Hayward would actually be a continuation of the purgatory. With Hayward we still don’t stand a chance to beat the Warriors and i don’t know about the Cavs that’s a toss up at best. Even if we could magically get Hayward for free, resign Waiter and JJ we still are so far behind the Warriors its not even funny and that’s getting Hayward for free. Our most realistic option would be to become the pre Wade heat or in other words the Atlanta hawks, a team that makes the playoff but has no chance to contend.

So we could choose to bring back Babbitt at the 4, and look to add a backup PG. however, we seem to not be keen on adding backup PGs the past few seasons and opting for combo guards instead.

Depth options at the 4 and 3 would probably be it. Not sure who would fit the bill? Would rather go for large 1yr deal to keep space for 2018 if we strike out on Hayward.

Beas, Tyreke, TRob - does it for me. Waiters was just a 6 week walk on.

Danilo Gallinari is a good fit and he is still available. He can probably play both PF and SF but has injury problems. It might take $20 mil per year to get him though. A cheaper option would be Patrick Patterson or Ersan Ilyasova.

Mailbag: Could the Miami Heat pull off a sign-and-trade if they land Gordon Hayward?

Image

ORLANDO – The Miami Heat should know sometime in the next 60 hours if they will land Gordon Hayward.

The Utah Jazz forward completes his three-day tour today by meeting with his old team and then will decide between Miami, Boston and Utah.

If Hayward chooses to play in Miami, a sign-and-trade with Utah is possible to shed more salary and add more upgrades to the roster. We explore that among our mailbag questions.

If you weren’t able to ask a question, send your questions for future mailbags via Twitter (@Anthony_Chiang and @tomdangelo44).

From @anthonyquillian: Could the Heat not just do a sign and trade with Utah for Hayward for McBob, Wayne and TJ to have money for other FA’s?

Pat Riley would drive Josh McRoberts, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Johnson to Utah if the Jazz would agree to that deal, although he likely would prefer just McRoberts and TJ in that deal. That not only would save them about $12 million from McRoberts’ and TJ’s contracts this year – Ellington’s salary is not figured into the $35 million of cap space being reported because the Heat have yet to make a decision as to whether they will exercise their team option. And just as important, about $38 million would come off the books for 2018-19 and 2018-20 seasons combined without TJ on the roster. If they were able to include McRoberts and TJ in a sign-and-trade, that would then open enough space to bring back James Johnson and Dion Waiters.

But, your point is well taken and yes, there may be an avenue for a sign-and-trade with the Jazz. Utah is not a popular destination for free agents and if the Jazz know they are losing Hayward then they may want a nice young player who is under contract for a few years in return. That being said, I believe it will be very difficult to convince anybody to take TJ because of that contract. But because McRoberts’ deal is expiring maybe throw in Justise Winslow, who could be very enticing for a team to make sure it does not lose a player for nothing.

McRoberts and Winslow would carve out about $9.5 million extra which would get the Heat closer to being able to bring back Johnson and Waiters to go along with Hayward. Not quite there, but closer.

From @AsherWildMan6: How does this Tyler Johnson contract if traded work? I keep seeing he would have a cap hit and a salary increase? How does that effect either Heat or Future salary cap if he is traded?

TJ’s contract is an albatross on the Heat’s payroll in 2018-19 and 2019-20. After making about $5.9 million this season his number climbs to $18.9 and $19.6 the next two years, which is why no matter what the Heat do this year – whether they sign Hayward and James Johnson or don’t get Hayward and bring back Dion Waiters and James Johnson – with the guaranteed salaries of players like Hassan Whiteside and Goran Dragic the next few years, Miami will be capped out.

Whether TJ is in Miami or part of a sign-and-trade the $44.5 million remaining on his deal – he will make close to $6 million this year – will be on that team team’s cap.

Not sure if this was posted yet.

At 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the official start of free agency, the Heat showed Haslem another example of how much they love him by decorating the gates outside his Southwest Ranches home with four large banners.

That'd be a great fit for him tbh. Beasley would get to play behind his good friend Kevin Durant, and the philosophy of offense offense and more offense is perfect for a guy like Beasley.

If he doesn't come back here,I would love for him to get a shot with the Warriors.

If the Miami Heat can pull off a sign-and-trade with Utah in exchange for Gordon Hayward, we still have enough to make a trade in exchange for Carmelo Anthony. But if we do choose to acquire Carmelo, then we have to decide between Dion Waiters and James Johnson. Unless, we make the trade in exchange for Carmelo around the month of January.

Hassan Whiteside (age 27)--------$23,775,506
Carmelo Anthony (age 33)---------$20,915,008 (via trade to earn a salary of $26,243,760)
Gordon Hayward (age 27)----------$23,680,000 (via sign-and-trade to earn a salary of $29,700,000)
Goran Dragic (age 31)---------------$17,000,450
Total------------------------------------$85,370,964
