When we traded JR Smith the narrative was he was a difficult contract to take on because at the time, JR had up to 2 years and ~12 million remaining.

Sure enough, JR had a decent (not great) year and ended up opting out of the second year of his deal.

Melo also has a player option after this year. Barring some crazy injury or tremendous drop in production, it seems unlikely to me that Melo won't opt out. He'll be in a much better position to get a 3-4 year deal at 34 than 35 and there's still a lot of interest in him.

Don't take on garbage long term deals (Anderson) in a Melo trade. A low first rounder isn't worth 40 million. Keep Melo or buy him out at the deadline with an agreement that he opts out. I hope this team can learn from past mistakes.
