Nice pick Mav fans. I think you got a good one. Brings back memories of 3 Js when Kidd lived in my neighborhood his rookie year.
If he can help B Falcon up his efficiency with better spacing and live up to his potential, the Mavs have room to grow down the line.

Marbury when he was with the Wolves is a close comparison. Tim Hardaway Sr. is another good comparison I've heard.

I'm thinking 15/5/5 is a realistic expectation.. If he's an exciting rookie and we have a decent pick next summer, don't be surprised if free agents actually want to come here lol

For what it is worth, I hold a similar opinion to many that he is the steal of this draft, I was hyping him hard at #7 (along with Lauri Markkanan, if Dennis Smith Jr. was gone), as I have him as a top prospect in the draft (next to Markelle Fultz); I cannot wait to see him play for Rick Carlisle. Congratulations you all, he is a hell of a player.

I think he's probably a 25 mpg guy who begins the season on the bench. I know RC calls him a starter, but unless he is also committed to tanking he's not going to give serious burn to a 19 year old point guard.

He'd better be our day one trouble. I would consider him being benched only if he fails to impress during the preseason. It's not hard to start over any of our PGs. If he can't, I am really disappointed.

Re: Welcome Dennis Smith Jr.
If Yogi was starting last year and knowing the PG competition right now is between Yogi vs. JJ Barea vs. DSJ, there is no way Dennis Smith Jr. doesn't give us the best chance to win. Granted this assessment is based on a) his college game and b) there is the chance his game doesn't transition to the NBA (as with 99% of rookies) -- however, his natural talent, even with rookie mistakes, will easily give us the best team on the floor.
With the fact that we also have a 4th/5th "PG" in Seth Curry AND Devin Harris, both of whom can play the point when needed, it's not out of the question that JJ Barea gets moved to a team like Cleveland, Charlotte or Minnesota, all of whom could use Barea's instant offense and veteran experience off the bench (and with a great contract: 2 years, 7-million left). He's such a bargain these days. We probably just get a 2nd rounder, but pending how FA goes, it's likely on the table (though, ultimately, Dallas probably keeps him around as insurance with two youngsters at the PG position).

I'm all for reducing the glut we have at PG for a pick, a more traditional sized SGs, or a better backup for Dirk, but the bridge between JJ and Minny was burnt to the ground. No way do they welcome him back.

Hopefully, Dennis helps Dirk to get pass Chamberlain sooner or later. At this stage of his career, he needs space to shoot well. Not needing him to move his feets that often would certainly help.

I feel like Marbury was a bit quicker than DSJ both with his overall speed and dribbling ability. Especially in his earlier days.
Baron Davis is someone that comes to mind
Stout build, explosive athleticism and coordination to get where he wants yet he doesn't seem to ever be running overly fast, average 3pt shooter, decent facilitator, good at defense when he wants to be, lots of sportscenter dunk highlights, can get to the rim at will
Im curious to see if him and Noel can figure out a P&R game

Yea Baron Davis is a good comparison too. With his game he should thrive in Carlisle's offense. He's really tough on PG's but if Smith listens to him Carlisle will make him an all star. He needs to get on the same page with Noel, Barnes, and Dirk. They should be able to pick and roll teams to death. With Dirk and Barnes' mid range game Smith should have a lot of opportunities to attack the rim too. I see lots of lobs to Noel too.

Re: Welcome Dennis Smith Jr.
I went to nc state so i had the displeasure of watching this kid all season.
Ive always really liked the mavs and i love cuban but between barnes and dsj this has gotta be my least favorite team in the NBA now.
Especially since i cant root against kobe and the lakers got ball.
Just Wait til you see this kids defense. Its a darn good thing you got nerlens noel back there

Other than bad defense what made you dislike him so much?

Re: Welcome Dennis Smith Jr.
Sulked a lot, completely abandoned the team defensively, nonstop losing with a pretty good roster, didnt have the outside shooting advertised...
The rest of the team wasnt on speaking terms with him by the end of the season. Though some of that was jealousy and the way none of the team rules applied to him.
Hes got pretty large bust potential IMO. But hes a human highlight reel with his explosiveness.

His relationship with his team and his lack of effort during a losing season was the knock on him in the draft. It's also likely that is only reason he wasn't considered 1 & 1A with Fultz.
Coaching also had a lot to do with NC State's down year correct? Wasn't the whole staff let go mid-season? Coaching won't be an issue in Dallas. There are also plenty of leaders in the locker room so Smith Jr won't have to carry that weight right now. And Carlisle is widely regarded as the second best coach in the NBA and has done wonders with guards throughout his career. The Mavs also run a heavy P&R system that is perfect for him. Then look at the support he has from his family and that he's going to get from Mark Cuban he has every reason to succeed. There is huge bust potential but he would have to completely go off the rails to not be a success in Dallas.

Re: Welcome Dennis Smith Jr.
Dallas is a good a setting as anywhere for him i agree. I just don't think hes ever going to be a good starting NBA PG.
Deanondraft summed up my thoughts on him pretty well. He reminds me a lot more of dennis schroder than russell westbrook.
He's definitely a boom or bust prospect for sure. I was REALLY high on him coming into college but it only took me a few games of watching him to reverse my position.
It will be interesting to see what dallas fans think of him. It will help that hes in a non playoff expectation environment for a few years. Gives him time to develop a little

Re: Welcome Dennis Smith Jr.
DSJ played on one of the most dysfunctional and poorly coached NC State teams I've ever witnessed. The UConn team that Drummond played on looked like the Showtime Lakers in comparison. Mark Gottfried, the coach, got canned mid-season because it was readily apparent that he could recruit but he couldn't coach to save his life and State wanted to start the coaching search early. Guess what happens when you have a lame duck coach in a lost season? Really **** team morale. Somehow this got twisted and put on DSJ because it was easier to blame him for not turning a turd into a polished team than it was to point the blame at the actual crappy roster and coaching. I'm not being hypocritical either when I say that Gottfried was a good recruiter that brought in good players and State's roster was still ****. One of the big problems was that good players kept transferring out b/c Gottfried was such a lousy coach (Purvis, Martin twins, etc). So there was always major roster flux and DSJ got the keys to be PG of a roster in flux. Another major factor in State's suckiness during DSJ's year was the other really high prospect, Omer Yurtseven, sat out the first 10 games or so of the season FOR DOING WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO. Yurtseven did everything he was supposed to as a pro player in Europe to not violate the NCAA's ridiculously nebulous criteria for keeping amateur status but he made too much money simply because the NCAA felt that a kid living and playing in the city with the highest standard of living in Turkey should be able to get by on the wages of someone living in a place like Iowa. so instead of eating Ramen every night Yurtseven had to pay $1000 to a NCAA charity and sit out the start of the season. The result was he was rusty as hell and sucked big time adjusting to college ball and didn't have many cupcake teams to work it out through before being thrown into big matchups. The rest of the team just sucked in earnest, the only floor spacer was Maverick Rowan and he couldn't keep his shadow from getting by him. Honestly DSJ's stats are pretty good considering how badly he was misused and how inept his teammates were.
Here's what DSJ will bring to the Mavs. An absolute terror in the P&R, especially if he can get going downhill. He can explode to the rim and either finish around the contact with difficult layup made to look easy or absorb the contact and get a controlled shot off for an easy And 1. His body control is probably his best asset. His handles aren't CP3 ball on string tight but they're not too far off; he does keep it nice and low and has a very shifty first step. His floor vision is underrated as is his ability to set up his teammates (6 APG on that NC State team is a testament to this). He's more inclined to be a scorer than a facilitator but not usually to the detriment of the flow of the offense. The bad stuff is basically that he's a streaky shooter and the long range shooting probably won't yield good looking %s right away. He has the same problem that Kemba Walker had in that he shoots it differently constantly instead of consistent mechanics. Strangely enough he'll hit big shots though. The defense could be a problem area due to lack of length but he's active and good at picking off passes and muscling opponents into a lost handle. He does get stuck on screens a lot. Hopefully what defensive shortcomings he has will be overcome with good coaching, he had a reputation at State for studying his game tape on defense constantly. It will be a lot of fun to see DSJ on a team with spacing and a lob threat in Noel, he should have enough room to really flourish in the P&R and get wide open looks for Dirk and Barnes.
