Fultz vs. Tatum: What do you think now?

Post#1 » by sam_I_am » Tue Jul 4, 2017 3:13 pm

I loved the trade at the time and after last night I still do. I think both Fultz and Tatum will be studs. Fultz really looked like a guy who can score from anywhere and proved worthy of the hype. However, I think last night Tatum proved Ainge's point that picks 1-4 were comparible talents and therefore trading sideways to get another lottery pick was very wise. It's still early but I think Tatum showed me enough to believe that Ainge was serious when he said he would have picked him first.

I'm really curious to see what others think.

I was uneasy after he made the trade, but I came to realize that DA wasn't gonna pick Fultz at #1 anyway so he must know something I (we) don't. Very happy overall. We got Pierce 2.0, as my brother calls him.

I'm a little dubious about the trade but willing to see if Ainge made the right call.

Not knowing anything about both, I trusted Ainge with the notion that the new pick would be more than worthy any drop off from 1st to 3rd.
I am really excited about the possibility that the Lakers pick might net us Doncic. If that happens, Ainge is a God.

If we kept the pick and drafted Fultz, I'd have been fine, but Tatum was just one of those guys that would have made me keep looking over my shoulder doubting myself.

Looks like Ainge had zero doubts.

Think it was one game and both guys looked good. Still think Ainge could've held out for a better deal though

As of this post, 11 of the 13 votes are for option 3. Bunch of revisionist history going on here.

They both looked great, but Tatum looked great at 6'8". And if you think they both look great, getting the future pick on top of one of them is amazing.

Like both. Love tatum's length. Where was Fultz's explosiveness? That surprised me how ordinary an athlete he looked. He has great separation wit the dribble and on his shot though and he will be a knockdown shooter.

Either that or the fire Ainge crowd are just waiting for the news that Gordon is staying in Utah to overreact again.

A great trade. That pick next year could be the 2nd overall pick. If that happens, we end up with another elite prospect.

I still want Fultz, but Tatum looks as good as advertised. Can get his shot off from anywhere, high release, clean stroke. Gonna be a good player.

But I feel like the same can be said for Fultz. He shot the ball with supreme confidence. Every time he goes up for a shot, it just looks so smooth. Not to mention, I thought those stories about Fultz's "lack of defense", was nonsense and it while it's only one SL game, he looked solid on that end. Those long arms of his makes up for a lack of a quick step and allows him to bounce back and contest. He'll rack up a ton of blocks in the NBA defending many smaller guards than him.

Not sure the poll options really capture how I felt about it (or continue to feel about it). I was pretty down on it at the time and one summer league game isn't really a large enough sample size to change that much (but it was certainly encouraging). If Tatum and Fultz end up being roughly equivalent like they appeared last night, then I'm very happy to admit I was wrong - getting the taller player and a pick is obviously fantastic.

The two best offensive players in the draft. Been saying that since like this time last year. I think Fultz is the best prospect because of his elite physical tools at the PG position combined with his advanced offensive skill set. His length is freakish as demonstrated by some of the blocks he was getting out there. If he realizes his defensive potential, then we're probably gonna be looking back at this trade and questioning it for years to come.

Was upset at the trade, but I got over it pretty quickly when we drafted Tatum. Probably the best 1 on 1 scorer in the draft, his shooting stroke is pure (despite the percentages), and his physical tools and athleticism are underrated too. If Tatum is even a comparable player to Fultz, we win the trade. The pressure is all on Fultz to prove to be head and shoulders above the class. If he isn't, Philly will look bad for giving up another lottery pick to move up to #1 and not select the best player in the draft.

I liked the trade but wanted the Celtics to draft Isaac, which I still would have preferred but Tatum looks great so far as well.

I don't think Philly will look bad if Fultz isn't "head and shoulders" above the rest. He's a much better fit for their team than the players that would have been available at 3 - they took a gamble on rounding out their roster, which I think in this case is respectable. The scenario where they look bad is if the Celtics land a superstar with that pick, but that's why it's a gamble.

Fultz is going to score in this league and he has a chance to be special.
Tatum, however, is a modern day 3/4 that could absolutely terrorize the league for years to come. He is a big boy...silky smooth too.
I think Fultz & Tatum both become big time players in this league.

I get that, but fit might not matter 3-4 years down the line. We don't know how the roster will look then, or if some of their other guys will even be able to stay healthy. To give up another lottery pick to move up from 3 to 1 you have to be pretty sure you're taking the best guy (for the record, I still think he is). There is a lot more pressure on them than us IMO.

I think it's one summer league game.
