I've been pretty consistent about not thinking the *team* you can build around Hayward with the available salary is much better than the alternative. Hayward is a good - not great - NBA player and I can see players that we have now able to match his level. I'd rather have Hayward the Rudy Gay or Danilo Gallinari. Let's flip your observation around. Wouldn't you have preferred to get Butler? I would. What about Paul George? What about Kevin Durant? Where does Hayward fit here? At the top? I don't think so.
Butler and George were unrealistic though. Both nabbed in trades when we have no tradeable assets besides TJ and giving up dragic/winslow wouldve been a risky move. Also the bulls wanted butler out of the east probably wouldnt have been trade partners with us and with PG you ran the risk of a rental for a season before he goes to LA to be the man. Hayward was by and large the best free agent of this class many people underrate him because hes in utah and white but the guy can easily put up 25+ here. I think hes worth the max and was worth fighting to get him. If we miss out hey we can still get dion who up until the second half of last year had been a bust his whole career and JJ was a journeyman. But hey this board is so convinced that with those 2 dudes its more than enough to be great. If we miss on hayward it will be a bummer but tbh i dont see us making it to the ecf, maybe the second round id like to see how winslow improves and if bam can contribute immediately
