Conflicting Information: Hayward to Boston?

Post#621 » by Ranma » Tue Jul 4, 2017 6:43 pm

Personally, I think Hayward is going to Boston and just wants to inform the Utah Jazz in person or personally over the phone before making it official.

Why the Celtics Didn't Go After Hayward and Gallinari

Post#623 » by Ranma » Tue Jul 4, 2017 7:01 pm

Ranma wrote:I actually thought Gallinari would wait until at least tomorrow after Hayward's anticipated decision. I figured the Celtics would also pursue Gay if Hayward passed on them but Wojnarowski is reporting that they also offered Gallinari the opportunity join them if Hayward didn't. I'm actually curious why they wouldn't go after both at the same time since they fit together as a pairing in a starting lineup. Maybe the presence of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum has Ainge reluctant to add more than one vet wing player.

Boston would now need a series of transactions to create cap space for Gordon Hayward. The Celtics would have to pull the qualifying offer on Kelly Olynyk, renounce free agents Jonas Jerebko, James Young, Gerald Green and waive the contracts of Jordan Mickey and Demetrius Jackson (or trade). The Celtics would be left with $27.6M in room and likely need to move the contract of Terry Rozier or Marcus Smart. Trading Rozier would have the Celtics short $1M of a max salary a lot.

The Heat now will get salary cap relief of $25.3M and $26.8M with the Chris Bosh waiver. Miami as projected has $12M in cap space that could increase to $37M. Free agents like Dion Waiters and James Johnson would need to be signed with room.

Contract Details and Celtics' Cap Situation

With Gordon Hayward now agreeing to a four-year $127M max contract, Celtics management now has a series of transactions to do in order to create cap space. The Celtics would have to pull the qualifying offer on Kelly Olynyk, renounce free agents Jonas Jerebko, James Young, Gerald Green and waive the contracts of Jordan Mickey and Demetrius Jackson (or trade). The Celtics would be left with $27.6M in room and likely need to move the contract of Jae Crowder, Terry Rozier or Marcus Smart. Trading Rozier would have the Celtics short $1M of a max salary a lot.

After the Gordon Hayward defection to Boston, Utah now has $82M in guaranteed contracts, $8.9M in non-guaranteed money and Joe Ingles $4.2M cap hold. Utah could have $11M in cap space if the were to waive Boris Diaw.

I think the contract has to be going into the final year to do an extension that would then convert the last year into the super max salary. I'm not sure though.

The Dirk Nowitzki two-year $10M contract once again gives the Mavericks cap flexibility. Including the Nowitzki $5M cap hit and Nerlens Noel $10.9M hold, Dallas has $11.5M in room. The room could increase based on $7.2M of non-guaranteed contracts.

Yes, but you can only renegotiate up, extend the contract, are eligible three years after the initial contract was signed, AND you have to have cap space to do so.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

The Wizards now have two days to match the four-year $106.5M Otto Porter offer sheet signed with Brooklyn. The Nets cap space will be tied up for at least two days until the Wizards either match or decline the sheet. The Nets cap space now goes from $28M to $3.5M. A match and Washington will be in the luxury tax for the 2017-18 and possibly 2018-19 season.

Miami is right at the cap after the Kelly Olynyk four-year $50M contract. The salary factors in the $4.8M cap hold of James Johnson and $1.5M Luke Babbitt hold. The $6.3M Wayne Ellington contract becomes guaranteed on July 7 and the Heat have an expiring $6M contract of Josh McRoberts. Miami still has the $4.3M room mid-level exception.
