Big question with Detroit so far up against the cap. What if Detroit could take advantage of Boston,s desire to leap Cleveland.
1. New Jersey offers Pope max. Pistons let him walk.
2. Detroit now is a destination for salary shed. Boston unloads Smart, Crowder, and more salary to Detroit, and gets Drummond back.
3. Detroit insists on one of Boston acquired first rounders next year to sweeten the deal.
4. Pistons get a few decent pieces, and would likely have two top five picks nextra season.

Re: Rebuild plan should New Jersey offer Pope max
Everyone on every RealGM board in the world thinks Boston is going to unload talented players for free or on the cheap. Never going to happen. If anything, they may package players to bring on a center or make a run with what they have. But, they are not unloading salary on the cheap. These are assets, not freebees.

Crowder and the Brooklyn pick both have more value than Drummond. Not sure if all of the Pistons assets combined would get the Brooklyn pick tbh

Detroit doesn't have any cap room even if KCP walks. We're still capped out.

Certainly not with how Boston values it (ie unwilling to give it up for Butler/George).
They seem pretty set on only doing deals where the other team gets destroyed.

Re: Rebuild plan should New Jersey offer Pope max
Plan should be to reach out to Brooklyn and say if you plan on offering x amount or under we will match - if you offer more we'd rather trade him to you but if you don't want to do that we'll match as well. Maybe they take on Leuer in another trade for capspace and then we S&T KCP to them for a equal size TPE.
We'd be about $10M under the salary cap with the subtraction of KCP's cap hold and Leuer's $10M off the books. We could sign somebody for $10M and use some of that TPE to bring in a cheaper SG from a team looking to shave salary.

Waiters just got 52 over 4. I'd take that over anything near 22 plus per year for Kcp. Hopefully this wakes both sides up to agree to a reasonable deal.

Waiters is something of a contract (half)year wonder though... With a history of being lazy and selfish on top of that. I'd say most teams think he's fools gold.

It's less about waking up both sides and more about what Brooklyn is going to offer. What's reasonable for Caldwell-Pope goes out the window if the Nets are fine with offering him a ton of money as a RFA in hopes Detroit won't match. Like they have been with Allen Crabbe, Tyler Johnson, and Otto Porter over the last year.
And for what it's worth Kentavious should hold out and see what the Nets will offer. If they're going for a 4-year max, and Detroit is only offering something in the neighborhood of $18 million per season, that's like a $30 million difference. Not hard to figure out which one would be accepted for any player, let alone one just about to hit his first huge payday.
For the topic, there is no rebuild plan if Caldwell-Pope isn't matched. Teams have made their moves in free agency so cap space is harder to maneuver around. Not that the Pistons have any cap space. Regardless of what happens with Kentavious they're going to be over. The team isn't going to be interested in dumping players either. Their clear stance is to win games and make the playoffs, not enter a full rebuild. Might not be a great stance but it is what it is.

How is Boston shedding salary if they take Drummond back?

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

The TPE counts against the cap. If you want cap space you have to renounce the TPE. So you can have 10 mil in cap space or a 20mil TPE.

Re: Rebuild plan should New Jersey offer Pope max
1.) Boston never going to throw in a first round pick
2.) This deal doesn't make us better
3.) You guys all want a top 5 pick so that in 3-4 years we get back to exactly this same spot but probably be worst off as a team.
4.) Crowder+Brk for Dre is a joke
