Re: Knicks sign Hardaway
On one hand, I'm incredibly upset that Mills is making long term decisions for our franchise that will impact us for years. 17.75 per is a hefty contract that puts a lot of pressure on THJ to reach value on that deal.
On the other hand, THJ is a completely different player than Knicks THJ. I don't know if it was the improved coaching/scheme, but his numbers across the board were excellent post ASB. He's just turning 25 and we'll have him for prime of his career.
He has a scorer's mentality and wouldn't be surprised if he was 2nd on the team in PPG next year with 18 or so.
THJ excels in transition and Hornaceck loves to run. Ntlikina's value on defense allows us to have a pure gunner at the 2.
This is NOT the same THJ that Knicks fans remember. I'm telling you guys.

Re: Knicks sign Hardaway
I don't really buy that Waiters is a better player. A year ago maybe but now no. It's hard to justify that stats wise. Not that I'm loving this Hardaway signing but I don't think waiters would have been a great move either.

DAWill1128 wrote:Does this move make more sense than the Noah deal or less? The Noah deal last year made more sense to me in that the organization thought it could be competitive. But Hardaway Jr on this deal at this time? Always seemed to me like a Nick Young kind of player with less NBA success than JR. That Rose 1 year rental looks pretty good compared to 4 years of Hardaway Jr. Why bring back a guy who didn't work out last time?
Why didn't the Knicks go hit or miss on big 1 year deals like the 76ers? These big 4 year contracts are a mess for teams if the guy isn't an all-star or your not a contender.
Sense is relative. There's the potential impact the player can bring vs. the cost associated.
Had Noah not already shown that he was breaking down then he'd actually have been about as perfect a signing as you can get. I mean the Knicks lacked defense, they lacked toughness, they lacked leadership, they lacked intensity and they lacked someone (at the time) to protect their prized draft pick (Porzingis). And Noah was NY born and bred so they'd also be getting a great marketing tool and a guy that you would expect to have an uptick coming back home. But the problem is that most everyone (except Jackson it appears) didn't think he was going to be physically viable to be worth a big contract. A big part of Noah's potential impact was tied into him being healthy and it was pretty clear that that was going to be unlikely. Noah at half that contract (4 years $36 million) IMO still would have been reasonable and would have been worth the risk. Not at what they paid him.
Hardaway is healthy and he's on an uptick. His strength (offense) is what the NBA is focused on. And you always want to be coming off the best half season of your career heading into free agency (and Hardaway was extremely good the 2nd half of last season...18/4/3 or something like that). So there is the chance that he could sustain that throughout a full season and going forward. He's also healthy and young (unlike Noah). Now he lacks the intangibles from the makeup standpoint that Noah has but if Hardaway was also all those things that made Noah unique from a mental standpoint, Hardaway probably already would have been averaging 18/4/4 and on his way up even more.
Ultimately it's about production. With Noah it was hard to see Noah returning to prime time Noah. His injuries appeared to be chronic, he was on the wrong side of 30. At least with Hardaway there is the potential that he can replicate the 2nd half of last season and/or improve overall off of last season (his best by far in the NBA). The Hardaway contract IMO is less of a gamble than Noah's and therefore a tick better with the potential to be much better. Even from the start I didn't see any real chance that the Noah contract would turn out to be justified.
Now by no means am I saying that it was a good deal or that I would have offered it...but compared to Noah...there's at least some justification to it.

Tim Hardaway is not Kobe but he has that Mamba Mentality. I want to see than in NY. As of right now he is the only assassin on the Knicks if ATL does not pick him up.

Lee would have one year less, is cheaper, and might fit their style of play
We already signed Tim outright. If we're trading lee then we're getting something else in return for him.
Call Utah. Courtney Lee and either Kyle O'Quinn or Lance Thomas for Dante Exum and Derrick Favors or Joe Johnson. The whole purpose for this would to be to shed salary and get an unsolicited look at Exum getting a shot to run a team in his 4th year. I know he's been playing well in the Summer League but with Rubio and Donovan Mitchell already in tow, Exum is expendable, IMO. You send Utah Courtney Lee, who will fit them perfectly as a 3-D and can either start or be the 6th man while backing up Burks, and whichever one of Thomas or O'Quinn they'd like.
D.Exum is beasting in SL so don't see them trading him. They've been patient with him and it's looking like next year will be his year to show out.

I am just afraid after he returns to the Knicks, he back to his old shell.
It is not the first time we witness Knicks player like this.

nobody really wanted either. all the knicks had to do was roll this money over to the next year by waiting and giving anyone left 1 year deals.
