What would Hinkie do?
I've been thinking about this for a few hours now..but let's just say by a miracle, Ernie Grunfeld gets fired and Sam Hinkie is hired in Washington.
How would he go about managing this team? What would he do? I'm trying to figure it out, but it's difficult given the situation we're in.

Re: What would Hinkie do?
There isn't much to do given the composition of the roster and our lack of cap flexibility. Perhaps Hinkie would look to trade Gortat and/or Morris for younger players and/or picks, but he probably wouldn't find that many good offers.
There is no grand strategy that will turn us into a contender. We just need a sustained period of smart moves where we find decent veteran talent cheaply, and make shrewd late round draft picks who can contribute.

Re: What would Hinkie do?
Why does Hinkie get so much praise on realgm? People are acting like he's some genius mad scientist or the east coast Morey when really he literally didn't do anything that I or anyone else in the world can do right now. Anyone can say that they are going to use the rules to allow me to put a d-league team on the floor every year in hopes of getting the #1 pick. Most of his picks weren't even great or didn't make sense which made them stink again until he finally got Embiid, Simmons, and Fultz but we aren't even sure if all 3 will be great and he didn't draft all of them anyways. Probably would've screwed the Celtics trade up.
I just don't see how everyone gives him credit for just putting a d-league roster out and losing full blown on purpose. Literally any GM can do that but most have too much respect for the game and their fans to go that far

Because being terrible is unfortunately a good long term strategy in today's NBA. The 76ers would likely have not gotten Embiid, Simmons, and Fultz without Hinkie. Especially since Hinkie did acquire that Lakers pick for practically nothing (MCW) which they used to trade up to acquire Fultz. He also fleeced the Sacramento Kings. Of course, I wouldn't praise the 76ers just yet because they still have to wait for their potential to develop and a few of their players who are injury prone.

Truth be told, the Wall era is already a failed rebuild. The fastest way to a Wiz championship is to blow it up and start over, which is what Hinkie would do if he were here and Ted gave him full control.

Sike, disagree. Our 3 best players are 27 or younger. We have talented young players at 4 out of 5 backup spots. 3 solid starters in Gortat/Mahinmi/Morris.
Lebron is going to get old and slow down eventually. The Celtics and Raptors best players are going to be leaving their primes very soon. We still have a real shot at the finals this upcoming season. Don't judge everything based on "championship or bust" nobody is beating GS until some crazy sh** happens like boogie announcing he's leaving the pels forcing them to dump him to D.C. For a couple draft picks and filler.
Right now what are we missing? An athletic big that can protect the rim inside the paint and guard the perimeter and simply a solid bench that doesn't get trashed. Mahinmi and Morris and maybe McCullough, hell, even mike scott was good defensively 2 years ago, could all help fill one void. The bench could be good next season with Sato and Mac stepping into the backup spots and Oubre taking another step(we forget the strides Oubre made last season because of they way the season ended for him)
Satoransky-Mac-Oubre-Scott-Mahinmi seems like a massive improvement from Burke-Thornton-Oubre-Nicholson(lmao)-Smith

When Hinkie took over the Sixers, he was faced with what to do with his lame roster, record, and draft position. I could see him trying to rebuild on the fly, and he would probably be a lot more open to dealing anyone on the team than EGgo is, but I don't think he would tear this team down to the foundation. He didn't have players like Wall/Beal/Porter in Philadelphia.

Re: What would Hinkie do?
I swear, you would think we had a 25-win team with the way people talk about this team. Is the owner cheap and GM pretty incompetent? Sure, but if we can win 50 games, that something this franchise hasn't accomplished in nearly 40 years. Remember, the Eastern Conference blows and many so-called experts are saying that LeBron is leaving for LA after next season. I remember so many rebuilding years and I'd rather finish in second place in the East then rely on some one-and-doner lottery pick that may be really good in 2-3 years.
I keep my expectations fairly low due to Ted and Ernie, but I am excited about this upcoming season unlike last year. Why? Because I don't expect 2-8 as this team should start out better as they won't have to adjust to a new coach. Now if Wall leaves in two years and EG botches it by not adding another quality player, we can talk rebuilding again.

Re: What would Hinkie do?
Back to original question, I feel Hinkie would operate this team much like how Morey runs the Houston Rockets. I doubt he sells off Wall/Beal for just assets although I wouldn't say that anyone on the roster is entirely untouchable and Washington would see more roster turnover. For instance, I could see Hinkie trading Oubre for another player and a future pick down the line. Brooks would be brought along to run a more statistically efficient offense and defense. I would imagine that Hinkie (aka Morey Jr) would keep roster flexibility by trading someone like Gortat for practically nothing. I'm guessing that Porter would be re-signed, although Morey did let Parsons walk on a similar looking deal at the time, Porter appears to be a more efficient and younger small forward.

I should say I think Hinkie would blow it up, but it's not what I would do. To Hinkie it's championship or failure with zero in between. As a Wiz fan I'm content riding out the rest of Wall's tenure here(however long that may be) while the Wiz remain pretty good but not a true contender. That might be a loser mentality, but the idea of a chip in DC is basically something out of a sci-fi movie, so I'll take 50 wins and a ECF appearance if that's on the table.

Re: What would Hinkie do?
You guys are acting like 50 wins is somehow in the stable already. It's not. We had an 18-3 run last year that was off the charts & incredibly great. We got the absolute most out of the team in those 21 games in a really unusual way.
Could something like that happen again? Sure, I suppose it could. Is it likely? No. W/o that run -- but, in fairness, also w/o the 2-8 start -- we were 29-25. Like a 44-win season.
To get a run like ours, obviously, you have to be on the W side of a lot of close games. That's what makes repeating the 49 wins something to want -- but not count on. Here's what I mean:
even though the Raptors only won 2 more games than we did, they were +4.2 pts/game vs. the league, while we were only +1.8 pts/game vs. the league. OTOH Miami was +1.1 pts/game & went 41-41.
In the EC, we were 5th worst in defense: only the Nets, Sixers, Knicks & Magic were worse (the Magic by only .2 points/game). League-wide we were 9th worst.
On offense, in the East only the Cavs outscored us. Overall, we were #5 in points scored. To me at least, it seems like defense is more a matter of ability & effort, whereas offense is more a matter of ability & luck.
Maybe that's wrong? Could be -- in any case, it's what concerns me.
Yet -- it's good that we have rid ourselves of almost 2000 horrible minutes b/c Thornton/Burke/Jennings/Nicholson are gone. That's 10% of all player minutes. If Sato & Mac can eat up those minutes, & especially if they show some improvement, that will help us get back this year to a 49-win record. The biggest help, however, would come from reducing Markieff Morris' minutes (well... if they are played by someone productive). He's way below average, & he's way way way below as a starter.

Oh I think we probably see Jesus come back before grunfeld gets fired. I'm serious He's coming down in the cloud like a lion and stuff... The King Jesus....
Ernie grunfeld probably be like a hundred seventy-three years old and still the GM of the Wizards...
I can't really wrap myself around this concept of anybody other than EG F in up this team
Awesome thread a adarsh 1!

haha thanks...to make it even weirder...i tweeted out a poll on twitter a few days ago with this question:
What happens first?
The Messiah Returns
Ernie gets fired.
I'm at that point with Grunfeld, but...what the hell we all know nothing is going to happen.
