Cause I didn't think we could afford him, but we got rid of mcbob and may finesse Ellington. Olynyk is a good player and that's solid money. I just assumed that if we kept jj and waiters that we'd have to target someone a step down from him.

Yeah ESPECIALLY the jj deal. Dude is 30. He's not gonna be worth his cap number by the 3rd or 4th year. This could get ugly

JJ’s games/minutes played for his career...

• 474 regular season games at an average of 19.7 minutes per game
• 19 playoff games at an average of 8.3 minutes per game

...he’ll be fine at age 34.

You should probably go back and look at the Dion Waiters signing and you will see something different

Oh yeah I was like yo that's good value and waiters has upside it's a low risk move and a lot of people were like wth is riley thinking Jesus Christ waiters is trash

For my part, Daffy, I am not a huge fan of Olynyk, but it's undeniable that he's a better player than I thought we were capable of squeezing in after Waiters and James Johnson. I thought we would pay a little more for Waiters (especially after the Lakers made the 1/$17M offer) and hoped we would pay less than James Johnson (while suspecting we would maybe even pay more.) This team is going to be making money and be motivated to prove themselves. I like a team that plays with a chip on its shoulder. Nobody is giving us a chance. That's perfect.

It really looks like we have two angles:

1. Keep the team competitive enough to make the postseason to give our team opportunity to grow.
2. Have a second tier of youth that we can build around (but our "older" players aren't really that old at the moment.)

Like you, I am stoked to see Winslow (along with TJ, Richardson, McGruder, and Adebayo) take a step up. They will all have a chance I'm sure. I'm intrigued about Hammons too. He's not terrible at all. He can block and hit 3s. I had no idea he had that range.

A few posts slipped in while I was writing this... Look, McRoberts is gone. The Offseason is a success. I don't care that he was an expiring and that we had to pay to dump him. He's gone. He's gone. He's gone.

How are you calculating the annual raises? I thought it was 5% per year

I didn't realize it was 5% raises per year instead of 4.5% under the new CBA. Thanks

I'm still learning things too.

Check this out:

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q86

For "low" salary players (up to $6.5M) trade matching is 175% + $100,000 for matching. For the next tier (up to $19M) it's salary+5M. Having players that you can trade allows you to jump levels.

Previously, teams could take back 150% of the outgoing salary in a simultaneous trade if they are not taxpayers and the outgoing salary is less than $9.8 million. That's huge.

That's why I keep getting the per year numbers wrong! I was using 4.5 raises instead of 5. Are bird rights raises 8 instead of 7.5?

Ha! It's not really. You take the 5% raise of the first year and add it to the other years. So it's cumulative, but not geometric. You don't get the raise on the raise.

Y1: X
Y2: X*1.05
Y3: Y2 + (Y2-Y1)
Y4: Y3 + (Y2-Y1)

Bird raises are 8%.

Olynyk is a good player and I like James Johnson as well, but this team screams treadmill for the foreseeable future.
