We liked him at 48 million. 71 million closes the door on matching.

In hindsight that trade was yet another failure. THJ had his moments but we basically traded a cost-controlled rookie for 1.5 years of him (and only a few months of actual production).

My thing is if Bazemore wasn't here with his contract, we might have inched up a few more on matching offers, but I also doubt they would have still tried matching the Knicks offer sheet. See Bazemore really throws things out of whack because If they really wanted to keep THj around, they would have at least extended him when they did Schro and been confident he would have became worth the extension during the season. Their mistake was giving Bazemore 15 million instead of waiting on THj.
Which is why I also don't see it as a failure either. I mean as much as I wouldn't have wanted the Hawks to match the Knicks offer, I think THj will actually play up to that contract. He was coming around last year after the AS break, and I'm sure other teams were going to offer him something lesser than the Knicks after the big names made their moves. Something tells me they really wanted to keep THj, but not at the price the Knicks wanted to acquire him.

I get how the Bazemore contract handicaps us but this is a new regime with Travis Schlenk. Even if we could've found a team to straight up dump Bazemore's salary on I still don't think Schlenk matches this deal.
In terms of Hardaway playing up to this contract, I doubt that, but there's no way of saying he will/won't for sure at this moment. Even if he does play up to that contract, though, he won't be playing up to it for us. No matter what happens with him from here on out with the Knicks, I think we failed at that trade.
