So much to love about this team right now

What should management do to solidify the team?

No obvious holes outside of getting a top of the rotation right hander (and that's minor considering the dodgers surplus or quality starting pitchers)
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

It is surprising as hell to me that Chase Utley only has 1,000 RBI in his career.

I've always maintained that his peak performance is on par with the top 2Bs of this generation and I think all time. So I knew there wasnt a super long record of being elite. But I thought he cracked 1,000 RBI easy.

Give Kershaw a changeup?

Honest answer is bullpen imo. Setup man.
I trust Kenley to be nails. I'd like to trust someone else to be nails.

I do not trust Hatcher, Baez, Romo. I'm willing to give Dayton another shot but I remember Chris Heisey taking him deep in Game 5.

Ranma has suggested we find our setup man internally. I tend to agree:
1) We have the talent.
2) After the Royals' 2014 and 2015 runs, I think bullpens became trendy and the cost of acquiring those arms became too high. See, last trade deadline. See, 3 closers (more??) all getting the biggest deals for relief arms this winter.

48-0 with a lead after 5 innings, could be a lucky run, but that seems to indicate our bullpen is performing...

Contagious Yips?

Post#509 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 9, 2017 12:47 am

Geez, man. Grandal can't catch the ball. His passed balls are responsible for the run against McCarthy in the 5th inning. Granted McCarthy has also thrown a wild pitch, but Grandal directly cost us a run.

Everyone has been concerned about McCarthy having the yips but Grandal was clearly suffering from them. McCarthy has been pitching a strong game for the most part, but if Grandal is hesitant to call a slider or any other pitch, that would affect McCarthy's performance.

We have to make a title run this year. We are so good. Forget next year. Let's get this one

Love it (that we are on pace for 100+ wins) but there's another half of baseball, plus postseason, plus the monkey on Clayton Kershaw's back.

Cautious and guarded optimism here.

oh barring any major injuries, I think we will get there this year. we are too good offensively, too good and have more depth than anyone else with our pitching staff, and still have money and prospects whom we may trade with, or promote.

and I still don't think we are hitting in all cylinders yet.

Kershaw is being Kershaw, Wood's rise was a pleasant surprise, but I still expect one or both of Ryu and Maeda to regain their form as for the former, as his shoulder grows stronger, and latter as his mindset gains confidence. McCarthy has to stay mentally tough going into the playoffs and not pull a Rick Ankiel, but I expect not the usual 3 men playoff rotation but to run out a 4 men rotation.

didn't expect Chris Taylor to be anything but a useful bench piece, he is Alex Wood of position player for me. but Joc/****/Puig are all hitting .210 to .250 BA. Puig's on pace for 30 HRs this season and yet his OPS is still just slightly above average. SVS fell off and was a forgotten man until the latest call up, which I am not sure if he can make the most out of.

need to add a piece to our bullpen. I think we can make a trade for Oh from St.L for a lower level prospect as they know they are not getting him back after the FA hits, and with the Cards out of the race ( they are not gonna get a wild card, they will have to win that division) and they could use some young blood. and we can have Oh set up Jansen along with Pedro.

I really hope Gonzo can make it back, not to start but to become our professional pinch hitter come playoffs. the other NL playoff contenders don't have too many strong lefty bull pen pieces, we will have our share of chances to bring up Gonzo to the plate and they will have to pitch to him, right handed.
ehhhhh f it.

Like Neddy, I think the Dodgers have enough to get to and win the World Series. On paper, I don't really think we need to add anything significant by paying a premium. I like the talk of us being "opportunity buyers". This team is built to not only compete this season, but for seasons to come, so I'm not inclined to make sacrifices to change something that doesn't really need to be fixed. However, I'm certainly open to making a deal if the price is right. I've mentioned before that our prospect depth in the minors is reaching a point of overflow, so we can afford to deal away quantity for quality.

I'm right now focusing on targeting Brad Hand from the Padres to solve our LHP hole in the bullpen. While I've advocated treating Alex Verdugo and Willie Calhoun as trade assets, I'm not inclined to trade either for just Hand. However, I love your suggeestion of also acquiring Seung-hwan Oh from the Cardinals. You know I wanted him even over Kenta Maeda when both were available as import free agents. He also wouldn't be worth either of the aforementioned prospects.

I also posted about acquiring Andrew McCutchen in the Prospects/Trade thread as a Puig contingency, but that is also likely to be a cost-prohibitive deal and, frankly, not a priority right now. Of course, I'm open to Quake's suggestion of going after a #2 starter if an opportunity presents itself, but given the premium price tag at the deadline, I don't see it as being a realistic possibility for such a trade to materialize.

I also like your idea of a healthy A-Gon serving as a pinch-hitter for the postseason.
