Well Lonzo Ball is not 5'6, so there's that.

Well Ball can't shoot and drive past anyone, so there's that.

You say Ball can't shoot based on 2 SL games? The kid had like awesome efficiency during the whole year.

And Ball is a better passer than Ulis. Way better. Worse defender maybe, or probably, but has a lot of tools to be better on that end too. Can't judge defense from SL as well.

College ball is way different. Every G leaguer was an elite college player. You can't judge his horrendous defense in SL but you can judge his passing skills in SL? Make up your mind.

SarcasticSun wrote:I felt like Marquese played a little lazy, seemed like he kind of thought he could just dominate without really trying. Bunch of turnovers and a bunch of fouls. Also shot poorly, I think that may have something to do with the weight gain as he's probably not used to it. The weight gain could also be why he appeared lazy cause even he admits he isn't in season shape. Not too worried though, he'll cut when the season comes around and be fine, but I've tempered my expectations for him SL wise.

I was critical of queses inability to keep his emotions in check and some of the pouting vs getting back on d.

Im less worried about the turnovers. Its summer league and its a time to push the limits of what a player can do offensively so its natural for guys to try and do a little too much out there and things they wouldn't do in a regular season game.

Now from a coaching perspective I would like to see them tell quese to take a game where he focuses soley on rebounding and D. Challenge him to use the new found muscle to try and grab 15 boards. Because thats an aspect of his game that will go a long ways to determining what kind of career he will have. If he can become an above average rebounder his path to becoming a good player is so much easier.

Shooting wise of course you want to see more of the threes go in but really i thought both him and bender took 3s when they were open so no real issue there as that needs to be part of their games. You would like to see chriss take some of those to the hoop if he sees an open lane.

I dont judge him from SL at all. I am stating various obvious skills he has from his college days and/or measures. He has the size to be a good defender. He is a great passer and shoots pretty well.

EDIT: I don't feel like arguing about a Laker, and a very love-or-hate-him one btw, is really worth our time.
I understand why many dislike Ball. I don't. I am obviously fearful of his shortcomings and bust risk, but I think he will be amazing to watch for years to come.

Back to worthwhile topics -

It would bee great to see Bender play like a pure stretch center for a game or two against lesser competition. Be in the right place defensively, grab the rebound. Outlet if available. On offense, pick and pop. If the defender recovers, THEN make the dribble play. Get the ball at the top of the key and make the perfect pass. If you get great position on a mismatch, THEN post up. If you get a mismatch but don't have great position, pass it off, reposition, and trust your teammates to get the ball back to you. Don't trip over your own feet bringing the ball up the floor - slow down, stay strong.

Just that. Do those things and hit the 3, and you'll be the most valuable player on the court (other than Josh Jackson, obvi).

If you have a friend with cable, their login information can be used to watch the game directly on ESPN's website. Otherwise, I'm afraid /r/nbastreams is where you're headed!

I watched it. Lonzo played amazing. It's fun to watch. Tatum is gifted but does not pass the ball. Does. Not. Pass. Might be instructions by the coaches for SL but his teammates were clearly annoyed.

I would say the stat keepers were pretty generous on the assists given to Lonzo. Seems like a lot of after the catch dribbling was done by some of his teammates.

I was thinking the same. Media needs the hype... smh
But a good bounceback game for Lonzo nevertheless, although shooting is still missing. 5/13 overall 1/5 from downtown. The 4 made FG's were mostly dunks and layups on the open court.

Tatum is Melo lite. Good for them, I just don't see how they will play their 15 wing guys together. Hayward, Brown, Tatum, Crowder, Morris, Young, Semi... Ainge should trade more to get frontcourt help now that Olynik is gone... Horford is pretty much all they got, unless they go small for full time with Morris and Crowder as their small ball 4s.

Heat will trade Whiteside sooner than you can say weak-side-block. Bam has been beasting, the exact same way - and is on a rookie contract for 4 years. 17.5 points 8,3 rebs 2,3 bls, 1stl, good FT % in Orlando, as averages. First Vegas game: 18pts 10reb 2stl 6/6 FT.
Sure, FG% is not good, but he is trying to do more than he will be asked to do in the league. Dude euro-stepped and all! :o Really good pick by the Heat, if they can use Whiteside in a trade. :-? Question is: who/what are they getting back, and when does it happen.

I wouldn't trade Whiteside because Bam did well in summer league.

My take on Ball:

-Just like i said, his shooting is bad. He was able to get away with it in college, but his slow mechanics and shooting from the neck area allow defenders time to get close and effect his shot (not by blocking but by putting pressure on him, thus making him release it too early or off target).

-Defense is still atrocious. He was labeled as a decent defender in college, but that was when he was able to use his height and length over much much much smaller PG's (average college PG is 5"8).

- Great court vision! (Just as advertised).

- Good passing skills. I do find it annoying as hell how hyped up everybody is about them though. A simple bounce pass to a man in the paint and people go nuts, like Vince Carter throwing down a between the legs jam. Its like chill, yes some are nice, but anytime anyone scores off a pass assisted by Ball, they make it seem like some unworldly act. (Also think the stat keepers were being a little too generous with the assists, saw at least 2 where he was credited when the shooter took a dribble or two plain as day).

- Leadership? IDK, didnt seem to talkative out there.

To me, i see Rubio/Rondo, minus the defense. Honestly, i see a very close comparison to Marshall (Good passer and court vision, and pretty much nothing else).

-Didn't someone last year point out that scoring does not typically transfer from summer league, but rebounds and assists do? (Meaning that players who sore a ton in summer league may not actually score much at all when the regular season starts.

-Regardless of the above point, Tatum looks **** legit.

-Don't compare Ball to Ulis. Ball has had one terrible summer league game and one decent summer league game. What Ulis did the last 20 games of the season was really **** impressive. And he did it in the REGULAR season. I dare say that if Ulis had gotten more burn earlier on, he would have been in the top 3 for ROY. I wouldn't trade Ulis for Ball. I'm 100% serious.

-Chriss' attitude and body language is exactly why we need strong vets on our team to guide the youth movement. Tyson and Dudley will keep him in line. Hopefully.

Are we waiting on the Hawks-Pelicans game to finish, because that's what the Watch ESPN is playing when I click on the Suns-Mavs game.
SHAZAM!

Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

Hoping for a good game. I know summer league doesn't define how our guys will do in the regular season or long term, but I'm still nervous watching. Really hoping we can at least shoot a higher percentage this game

I wouldn't put too much stock into a couple summer league games. He was easily the best shooter in college from just about anywhere on the court out of all the guards coming out. Sure his form is funky but it went in at a very high rate. It remains to be seen whether it will translate. But yeah, there have been others who have compared him to Kendall Marshall. Though Marshall played a few years and was a reach in the lottery in an ok draft, where Ball was consensus top 2 in one of the best drafts in years, so obviously a lot of scouts like him. Of course I'll root against him though.
