Magic Waive C.J. Watson

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Mon Jul 10, 2017 8:27 pm

As expected, The Magic have waived C.J. Watson.

Only $1 of $5 million was guaranteed in this the final year of his contract.

It was rumored The Magic wanted him years earlier but Golden State had planned to match any offer for him.

Injuries derailed Watson during his time here but he was a decent backup.

Nothing but the best to C.J.!

To be fair, Watson did get paid 11 million dollars for 2-year's work.

It's a shame we couldn't use his contract as an asset in a trade...

Looking back at his stats, Watson was liked because he was a 38% 3-ball shooter. That's over 8 years of work. In 2-years with the Magic, he was a sub-average 30% 3-ball shooter. I am not sure how that is possible, but it is there reason he was waived.

From the O-Sen:
By waiving Watson, the Magic now have $8.9 million in cap space remaining.

It started earlier. Ewing, Kemp, Dominique Wilkins - they all finished their careers in Orlando.

Had Mario been drafted by GSW and they would have no need for Durant.

All the best, CJ. Never read a line about him complaining about his role, as diminute as it was sometimes. Good pro and that's enough to earn my respect.

So while some teams were desperately needing to shed cap space, our front office couldn't figure anything out, huh?

1st knock - Poor use of late draft picks
2nd knock - Shelvin Mack
3rd knock - Not knowing how to make use of Watson's immediate expiring contract

hmmm...

I agree that this makes little sense to me too. (as does the Mack signing and the trade of the #25)
Having CJ contract, even if he's simply a 13th or 14th man right now and having the chance to later in the season trade it for a second rounder from some team trying to shed salary for the offseason would have been better than getting 4M in cap space right now but still owning 1M anyway and getting nothing else in return. It's not like we're going to sign anyone with the extra 4M that will make
us contend, right? So why waste the money like this?

The FO change was needed, but so far I'm not really impressed with the moves.

Addition by subtraction.

The following players are no longer on the Magic roster.

Wilcox: -8.6 BPM
Zimmerman: -7.3 BPM
Onuaku: -5.9 BPM
Rudez: -4.6 BPM
Green: -4.6 BPM
Watson: -3.6 BPM
Meeks: -1.8 BPM

These seven guys combined to play 3,842 of the 19,805 total minutes for the Magic -- that's 19.4% of the minutes that weren't just bad, were horrendously bad.

Figure out a way to replace DJ (or replace Watson/Meeks with a FA if Mack is DJ's replacement) and you're talking about 27% horrendous minutes being upgraded.

Combine that with increasing our best players (Payton and Gordon specifically, but also Fournier/Ross/Vucevic) from 28-29 MPG to 33-34 MPG and...

You get the picture.

Don't get it too mixed up... Everyone wanted him gone... But it was his value off the court (expiring contract) that contained value.

This was not like trading for a guy who's contract expires next summer... this was IMMEDIATE cap savings for spending right now. At one point Boston and Houston were aggressively looking for cap space. Many teams are... couldn't we have gotten sooomething???

That's why I didn't get the Vogel apologists last year. He definitely deserved some of the blame for playing some of these dudes an insane amount of minutes compared to their production. I can criticize the guy without wanting him fired.

Yeah, if we want to have EP/AG/Mario/whoever to get more minutes (and we should) we should simply let them play more minutes, and that was on Vogel. Waiving CJ won't give the others more minutes if we now use those 4M + some of the remaining cap space to sign someone else who we'll need to play in order to justify the investment.

Keeping CJ to try and trade him later would have been wiser, IMO. He wouldn't need to be in the rotation anyway...
