The negativity here is absolutely ridiculous.

Post#1 » by Bakuto » Mon Jul 10, 2017 5:49 pm

I'm honestly getting sick of so many of these posters. The hate that the team gets when they were two games out of a God damn playoff spot is pathetic. I wonder if the site's creators picked the wrong name for the site, because it seems to have implanted in the brains of many people here that they are the GM of their favourite team, despite the fact that they're nothing but keyboard warriors.

I'm going to address the things I think are ridiculous for being massively hated on here. There are a lot of places where I can start, but I'll go with the most relevant.

KCP is gone FOR GOOD REASON. Most people didn't wanna be tied up with his 20+ million is projected to be getting. We make a fantastic trade for a player who is not only better than KCP, but cheaper. If and when we pay Avery Bradley, he might make similar dollars but we'll be a lot more consistent, and therefore popular and less frustrating. For those crying over the fact that we didn't make a sign and trade or whatever ... It takes two teams to trade. What makes you guys think that other teams are willing to give things up for him? What makes you think that a potential return package would even be worth a sign and trade? Furthermore, I'm pretty sure KCP was on 90% of every poster's chopping board, and now he should have come back? Please make up your God damn minds. I'll admit I wanted him back for a fair price, but with Bradley here I'd much rather him.

Next, Langston Galloway. Seriously guys? The cap is 99 million and we gave 7 to a 3 and D combo guard. There's no reason to hate on that. Either you don't know who he is (which is fine) and/or you don't bother to learn (which isn't fine because you should know players before knocking a signing). Everyone here wanted shooting and better defenders. Galloway is that and he's only 25. It's not as if we signed some old stiff who's bounced around the league like a kid on a trampoline. I could even see him starting like Courtney Lee did for SVG's Orlando team if Bradley leaves next year. 7 million for a starting role player who can shoot and play defense in a league and system that relies on shooting? Even if only a temporary/stop-gap sign me up.

Third, Reggie. He was everyone's hero in 2016. He has a messed up knee. We all know this, and the only person we have any business being frustrated with here is SVG (the coach) who thought he was ready for full time minutes when he clearly wasn't. He should have been brought back off the bench slowly to make sure everything was feeling alright instead of being thrown into the fire. I get that he dribbles a lot, but with a more reliant offense with more spacing and movement, this should be different. I still think we're going to make another trade for a frontcourt shooter. Having that in the starting line-up with Bradley and Tobias should make a huge difference. It's not Reggie's fault that he's not surrounded by shooters. If you wanna be upset at that, then you can be upset at the lack of shooting we have, which can potentially be attributed towards Van Bower, but we don't know if there are many shooters available for a comfortable asking price either.

Next, Dre. Believe me here, I get the frustration. But we can't sit here and act like it wasn't inevitable. The biggest knock on him coming into the league was the lack of a motor. I do feel that if the team is better next year then he would find his motor again. We just have to hope. But it's undeniable that when he's engaged, he's a monster. I wonder if Bradley will be the team leader here and lay it into Dre that he has to focus more. Cheap vets would have been nice options for that too. That's why I really appreciated Blake, Tolliver and Anthony during their time here. You could tell that they provided a good influence on the team.

Finally, drafting. A couple points here.

Yes in hindsight we should have taken Booker in 2015. Maybe even Turner. But hindsight in 20/20 ... We need to stop acting as if Booker was the obvious BPA because if he was then Charlotte would have taken him at 9, and laughed because he shouldn't have been there at 9. If you guys wanna blame this on anyone (even though you shouldn't) ... blame Coach Cal. I think if Booker started for that Kentucky team than his exposure would have been astronomically higher and he would have looked a lot better playing next to Towns, Lyles, and WCS.

Ellenson. Not everyone here hates on him but some do. Just wanna say to them that Henry was definitely the best player there at 18 last year. I know Brogdon won RoY as a second rounder, but I know I wouldn't have advocated drafting a six-year senior with the 18th pick. Many had Henry in their top 10s or at least in the lottery. That kind of value at 18 is perfect. Not a bad pick by any means.

Kennard. Yes Mitchell probably seems like the sexier pick, but none of you (as far as I know) are professional scouts. We wanted and needed shooting and went and got a guy who shot 44% from three on very high volume. For the brief amount of time Detroit was 7th seed and was slotted at the 18th pick I wanted Kennard at 18. Happy with him now at 12.

Now, I'm not saying you guys have to agree with me, but I'm saying a lot of the hate here is ridiculous. I mean people are still bitching that Monroe isn't here ... It's almost as if some of you are trying to find reason to bitch and complain. SVG and Bower certainly haven't been perfect, but they're also not Joe Dumars.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I didn't bother reading this, but heres my thought. We had one of the highest team payrolls and even if Reggie had been healthy...i don't think we would've been a factor in the playoffs (would've made it though). Team doesn't play team basketball, many key players play like they couldn't care less.

SVG loves shooters and this is the first year he has seemingly tried to get some, entering his 4th season.

It just doesn't seem like theirs a plan outside of the trade market. When we make trades, hes good. Everything else, I don't think there has ever been a plan.

The season they made the playoffs was fun and exciting because it showed growth from a young team.

Last season was a rude awakening of a young team with a high payroll that lacked energy and Reggies injury didn't help.

This season is a make or break year for this group. I'm optimistic the team can get back to the level they were at during the playoff year but I'm afraid that this group will never be good enough to content and their lack of a plan is what's frustrating.

There's plenty of valid things to criticize or be concerned about, but for the people who take it ridiculously too far it's easier just to add them to your foes list and hide their posts imo :)

Hard to be positive when the team regressed back into the lottery, we lost one of our key starters for nothing in return, and we didn't get a starting caliber playing in FA. Also, when we're banking our future on Dre and Reggie who have played so inconsistent and shown a lack of passion/heart/smarts/defense/etc... I'm not sure I've been this unhappy with our future since year one of Ben Gordon and Charlie V.

Yep, seemingly forever stuck in mediocrity.

1). We have an owner and coach unwilling to commit to the youth and being bad bad enough to stockpile franchise-changing players via the draft.

2) With the contracts we still have here, we are strapped with what moves we are able to make. So much so, that we just sent our starting SG (arguably a top-3 player for us last season) walking for nothing in return.

I'm a pessimist through and through, but I haven't been this happy during Summer happenings since the Pistons drafted Greg Monroe.

I wanted Morris gone. = Happy!

I did not want the Pistons to overpay KCP, and really wanted to let him walk. = Happy!

I originally wanted Kennard during the season, but as I much more wanted Morris out, I pined for Leaf. Got Kennard. = Happy!

Never cared much for SVG, but if he finds a way to send Jackson out the door without bringing back another nuisance, I'll have to write President Trump and tell him that the date should be memorialized by a National Stan Van Gundy Day.

I really don't care how well or bad this team does until one of (or both) RJ and Dre are gone. These two are the main culprits to whatever problems that people speak of. They don't play right and never passed the eye test with me each passing year. Even if one is engaged or whatever, or healthy.

It's as good as any to invest in a second team this year for me.

We don't have good answers to:

1) why we overpaid for Galloway? didn't seem like we were competing with anyone else.
2) why we didn't keep KCP with the QO as an asset?
3) why we signed a scrub C when there are seemingly less-scrubby Cs on the market dirt-cheap?

Bradley for Mook helps with some of this, but not all, and it's clear that SVG wasn't in the driver's seat on that (else he'd have never signed Galloway in the first place, which makes the overpaying him more ridiculous just days after the reported signing).

I'm quite pleased with the offseason.

AB is elite defensively, KCP isn't even close to AB on either side of the ball.

I was disappointed Monk or Smith didn't fall, but I was excited with Kennard, who I think is going to have an impact this season.

Perfectly fine with opening up a larger role for both Tobias and Stanley.

Galloway gives us a defensive option at PG that we haven't had in quite some time.

The PF spot is pretty gross IMO. I am not a Leur fan and I am not high on Ellenson as some are. I just think he's going to get wrecked on defense and isn't a knockdown shooter.

Would like to see us add depth at the 3 and 4. Adding Bullock and a defensive-minded PF and I'd be pleased with the offseason considering we entered it capped out and unlikely to unload the contracts of AD and RJ.

Childish fan base who think we had a legit chance to build a championship roster. It's pretty ridiculous if these guys are really +21 years old.

Wow. Brevity is the soul of wit, dude.

Talk about a Great Wall of text.

If you watched the second half of this season and don't understand why there would be negativity here I'm not sure what to tell you. We just see things too differently.

And I don't think anyone expected a championship team last year. We wanted progress and got a massive step backward.

For the record, the only part of this offseason I hate is the Galloway overpay. Was fine with the draft and the way the Bradley/KCP thing played out.

Yeah, the Galloway signing seems head scratching after the Bradley trade. I'd imagine Galloway still would have been there if they waited.

Then again, the Boston trade probably came about fairly quickly after Hayward agreed to sign there.

Now we'll either have a logjam of guards, or a lot of overpaid guards.

I never said I didn't agree with all of the negativity or disagreeing with decision making but some of the things people are complaining over are ridiculous. People still upset over Monroe not being here? That's reaching and literally just looking for something to complain over. Not wanting to overpay KCP but getting all pissy when the Pistons make it clear we don't want to pay him more than 5/80? Come on.

I also never said anywhere that anyone expected a championship team. I'm not sure how you got that out of my post. I definitely agree that progress was expected and not made. However I think it's fair to say that a healthy Reggie would have made things easier.

And if you didn't want to read the Great Wall of text, no one was making you. My goal was to address many points at once and to let some of the people here know that their claims are ridiculous and ruining the board, for me at least. Sorry if adding what I feel to be a justifiable amount of opinion/information is bothersome. But again I'm not making anyone read it.

The thing about expecting a championship team was a response to In SVG We Trust and his post attacking our collective maturity, which I felt was absurd.

And if you're interested in people hearing what you have to say and taking your arguments at face value, a giant wall of text is a bad way of doing it. Opening that wall with a generalized attack on other posters then eliminates those who might have wanted to read. It certainly did me.

And if you just want to sound off and don't care who reads it, a personal blog is a better venue. This is a place for discussion, and you created a topic that lends itself poorly to that.
