Why did Montrezl play? Hasn't he proven himself to be an NBA player?

Montrezl 18.2 PER, 4.1 WS, 9.1 ppg in 18.3 mpg
Marreese 17.5 PER, 4.2 WS, 8.7 ppg in 15.7 mpg


BTW, Montrezl is only 152 days older than Brice Johnson!!

can't shoot 3s though. Speights is not super good at it, but he shot above average and was able to space the floor.

True. But a stretch 5 isn't really necessary, and the stats say Montrezl is a better defender [+0.2 vs Mo's minus-0.8 DBPM]. Mo also fell off badly after the All-Star break, 31.6% from distance. And Montrezl is still only 23. He checks a lot of boxes.

Sindarius has an NBA heart but at 6'5" not an NBA body because he's really not a 2

He's 6'5", 212, with a 6'10' wingspan. He plenty big enough to play the 2 and small ball 3. Thats basically the same measurements as Wes Matthews, a guy who has played 32% of his career minutes at SF. I had this argument with Arizona fans all year about Rawle Alkins.

Cracking the rotation is a whole different debate, but I was a fan of the selection and will certainly be rooting for him to get some burn this season.

So he's going to have to change his game. He's just starting to make threes, and does not have deep range—they're all right behind the three-point line. He makes a ton of plays from mid-post, etc.

"At the NBA level as a wing, you want players who shoot threes, and can make plays in pick-and-roll, and I worry about a guy like Thornwell who needs all of the physical advantage as a matchup problem at the college level.

"Having said that, he really defends and he needs that to be his calling card."

BTW, I'm perfectly ok with him being an elite defender with some scoring ability.

Me too. But at 6'5" I don't know if Sindarius can defend SFs who will almost always be taller than him, and in college he was actually a "small 4," a 'combo forward'---which does not exist in the NBA unless you're Sam Dekker at 6'9" working down, not looking up.

Thats exactly the way the league is moving. There are plenty of undersized guys who play the 3 as a 2 and the 4 as a 3. I do agree that Thornwell is going to have issues defending 3s, because thats the superstar position in the NBA, the league's toughest covers.

The last thing we need is another small 3 being forced to play the position because we lack a legitimate 3 (Jamal, Austin, Bullock, ect.). Thornwell needs to acclimate to the 2 first, let alone the NBA in general. My comment was only that he is big (long) enough to play the 2. His shooting doesnt determine what position he plays. Wingspan matters far more than size when it comes to guards/wings. Same with standing reach and bigs/wings.

At 6'5" with a 6'10" wingspan, Sindarius is oversized for a 2. Certainly quick enough to blanket a JJ and theoretically an OK matchup with 6'7" Klay Thompson. Can he keep with Harden? McCollum?

And we seem to agree SF is not in his NBA future, at least for quite awhile.

On the other end, either as a 2 or a 3, I don't see how he's going to get by without an NBA 3-ball, which I don't think he has yet.
