Yeah, I mean, I get it, Morris is on an insanely cheap at 5M for the next 2 years. But man, a Beverley/Bradley backcourt is the stuff All-Defensive dreams are made of.

yeah, it is nice to dream about, but in the end, we still got Milos with career 3point % at .385 with the last 3 seasons better than 40%, and Patrick beverly with 37.5% in his career. we will be fine with its perimeter catch and shoot. I worry about the overall team defense but not the offense it can generate.

Oh, I love Milos and can't wait to see what he does. But I was picturing a lineup of Blake/Iggy/DJ/Bradley/Pat a couple of weeks ago just because. That would've been INSANE.

Are we still going after Tony Allen or is that over with?

Brand new team. Even if we re-signed Luc and Mo's ~3000 minutes, we'd finish no higher than 26th.

Prodigal Son's Return to L.A.?

Post#505 » by Ranma » Wed Jul 12, 2017 4:57 am

In his predraft video, he noted that Kobe Bryant was his idol, but all remarks at the time referenced the Clippers as his favorite team. Now he's saying he grew up a Lakers and Clippers fan. His interest of joining the Lakers this summer is well-known, so while he may have liked both Los Angeles teams, I believe he only noted the Clippers as his actual favorite.

Part of that may be because he was trying to angle for the Clippers to draft him. His pre-draft DX video interview does show that he says that he idolizes Kobe. George also goes on to estimate that he'd be taken 8th overall at the earliest (Clippers) with 13th overall his projected floor (Raptors); he ended up going to the Pacers 10th overall. Some suspect that he may have just been saying the Clippers are his favorite team in order to get drafted, but I'm not aware of him stating on the record that the Lakers were his favorite team, only that he was a fan growing up.

It's clear he wants to come back home to L.A. and, with the safe assurance that both teams in that market are anticipated to go after him, he can now focus on joining a winning situation, which could include OKC, but the odds are better for the Clippers and Lakers. It will likely come down to which of the two Staples Center home teams will offer him the best chance to win next summer.

Lee Jenkins, Sports Illustrated (7/11/17)
“I grew up a Lakers and a Clippers fan,” George says. “I idolized Kobe. There will always be a tie here, a connection here. People saying I want to come here, who doesn’t want to play for their hometown? That’s a dream come true, if you’re a kid growing up on the outskirts of L.A., to be the man in your city. But it’s definitely been overstated. For me, it’s all about winning. I want to be in a good system, a good team. I want a shot to win it. I’m not a stats guy. I’m playing this game to win and build a legacy of winning. I’ve yet to do that. I’m searching for it. If we get a killer season in Oklahoma, we make the conference finals or upset the Warriors or do something crazy, I’d be dumb to want to leave that.”

George will get four eyefuls this season of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and the young Lakers. Superficial measurements will matter far less than max slots and won-loss records. “It’s too early for L.A.,” he says. “It would have to be a situation where the ball gets rolling and guys are hopping on. This guy commits, that guy commits. ‘Oh s---, now there’s a team forming.’ It has to be like that.” But the same is true for virtually every locale outside of Oakland. “I’m in OKC, so hopefully me and Russ do a good enough job and make it to the conference finals and love the situation, why not recruit someone to come build it with us? I’m open in this whole process.”

With teams such as the Los Angeles Clippers (his favorite team growing up), Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies and Milwaukee Bucks all looking for a dynamic swingman who can create, shoot and defend, the chance of George being picked in the 8-15 range looks very good at the moment.

He sounds excited to go to OKC to play with WB.

Thinks their defense will be very good and if they have a good year, like win 50 or more games, get into the WCF, he may want to re-up there, maybe with the prospect of the Thunder signing another big FA next year.

Of course, he hasn't lived in OKC yet.

But if the season goes well for them and Westbrook signs his extension, you never know.

okay, lets entertain the potential scenario of signing Paul George next off season.

could in today's small ball NBA, Galli+Blake+DJ+PG13 can exist on the same team and actually win games? not being sarcastic one bit, I am genuinely asking if that can actually work.

i think it's important to define what you mean by "win games" or at least rephrase it in terms of how high of a ceiling you are currently pondering.

West's BluePrint a Work-in-Progress

Paul George is excited at something new playing with Russell Westbrook while still being free to pursue opportunities after the upcoming season. Yeah, he's dangling hope to possibly stay, but despite all that OKC has going for it, Durant still left them.

I'm not saying the Thunder are not in consideration, but even George is hinting that for him to seriously consider staying in Oklahoma City, another star would have to join him and Westbrook along with what seems like a caveat that the Thunder shows itself to be formidable going against the Warriors' juggernaut. I'm rooting for that to happen, myself, but that's a tall order to accomplish in a single season with a new key player joining the team.

Westbrook also seems to be hedging his bet in not agreeing to an extension that is already on the table for him from the Thunder front office.

The way I see it, we'd have to get rid of DJ for sure and likely at least Gallinari and/or Griffin. The cap is not going to increase much moving forward and a lot of what we'd have to offer will be dependent on who performs well and stays healthy next season. PG13 might like the idea of partnering up with BG. Or he might prefer bringing Westbrook along with him. I stil suspect West wants to make a run at Klay Thompson in 2019, so that could be another selling point to George.

It likely will be up to George and/or LeBron what the team will look like. LeBron is noted for wanting 2-way players, but both will want to team up with the star player of their choosing, so they'll be doing some recruiting themselves. The Lakers may have more cap flexibility, but we have assets that can easily be moved to accommodate whatever roster needs to be constructed in order to pitch free agents.

To answer your question somewhat, hypothetically, I don't see a Gallo+BG+PG13 working as a postseason contender; DJ is gone regardless in my scenario. BG+PG13 works better than Gallo+PG13 but a 3rd star would need to be added in either scenario.

West needs to get in on this and try to sucker Morey into giving us Zhou Qi... I can dream, right? At very least, this could be an opportunity to move Lou Williams for someone who fits the team concept better and can defend.

Add me to those who would welcome it. While it may interfere with West's plan to pursue Klay Thompson in 2019, EJ would be an expiring contract with only 1 season left on his deal at that point. Plus, Doc being the coach makes it unlikely he'll deal his son away, but it's technically possible and would work for all parties involved.

Yeah, but we're unlikely able to afford him. We'll see how free agency plays out, though.

love the guy, but without CP3, I don't think Luc fits in any capacity for us. we have Blake and Gallinari, with Dekker, Brice, and Harrell behind. Luc would offer a sure backup 3/4 player without offense. correct me if I am wrong, but defensive specialists work when you have a prolific offensive starting unit and the defensive ace gets enough minutes to hinder the opposing ace.

Are there any updates on Willie Reed? We still need a backup C and he would be great. Plays a lot like DJ.

Defensive specialists off the bench have a lot of value, and disregarding that has been one of Doc's main mistakes since he's been here imo. If we're gonna play guys like Lou, Brice, Harrell and Dekker off the bench, we better anchor them with someone who can play defense or it's gonna be the same scoring-some/allowing-a-lot that our recent bench units have been. Look at how Aldrich's been pretty much our best bench player of the Doc era by playing solid defense. Or how the Raptors have had one the best bench units in recent years by playing mainly defensive guys around Lowry.

If I had any say, first thing I'd do would be trying to trade Dekker and/or Harrell for a big man project that can play both ways (Diallo of New Orleans is my favorite), then re-sign Luc to help the 2nd unit. My ideal team coming off the bench consists of Beverley/Lou/Luc and two big men that can play both ways, even if they're not too polished. I can live with one of those being Brice, Dekker or Harrell, as long as the other one can play good defense. Otherwise we have the same problem we usually have with the bench, but with different people.

That's before getting into staggering the starters by the way, which will also be a necessity.

I've always liked Diaw's game. If Doc feels the need to do his annual washed veteran signing, he could do a lot worse than Diaw.
