Deveny: Hornets interested in Jordan Hill, Ilyasova, TJones, and Willie Reed

Post#1 » by yosemiteben » Wed Jul 12, 2017 11:56 pm

One player the Hornets have shown interest in, a source said, is Jordan Hill. Hill was waived by Minnesota at the end of June after appearing in only seven games for the team last season. The previous season, Hill averaged 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in 20.7 minutes with Indiana. Hill played for the Lakers in 2012-13, when Hornets coach Steve Clifford was an assistant for L.A.

Also on the radar as the Hornets consider big men are shooter Ersan Ilyasova, versatile young forward Terrence Jones and former Heat center Willie Reed.

I like Ilyasova and Jones. Ilyasova would probably be my ideal choice of that bunch. If I was confident Jones could get his 3pt% back over 30% then hed be pretty intriguing as a stretch big that can play PF and C, but with Ilyasova you know you are getting 35%+ from deep and 75%+ from the line and overall stability and solid play. If he an Frank were both to play well that might give us the luxury of moving Marv if we end up needing to make a trade for a wing or a PG/combo at some point before the deadline. Im not really into Hill because I can't see him working as a PF in Cliffs offense and I don't think we need another center who plays purely inside the arc. If there are injuries to Howard/Zeller then Frank can fill in at center paired with Ilyasova, or Jones could play center paired with Frank. Don't know **** about Willie Reed.

I like Jordan Hill and Terrance Jones, but I feel like Jones is too good to be playing limited minutes. Is Jones a SF/PF hybrid? I feel like at one time he was once a SF/PF hybrid, but now is listed at PF? If hes a hybrid, with MKGs health issues and inconsistency on the offensive end, Jones may be the perfect fit for a backup SF/PF.

so we're definitely looking for an extra big then? I'll take TJ out of that group. Ilyasova would be nice too. Hill is an overrated guy who should be in the D-League and Reed is a guy who is in the D-League.

I forgot TJ at times has played some SF. That makes him a bit more intriguing since we could potentially end up having depth issues on the wing.

Between MKG, Batum, Lamb, Monk, Graham, and Bacon, I don't think we're going to have any problems with wing depth lol

That's not even mentioning the inevitable Kemba/MCW backcourt that we'll get for 5-10 mpg.

Fair enough, but we don't know if Monk will actually have a role til later in the season, if at all. I have a lot of faith in Graham already being good enough for a 4th/5th wing role, but hes still pretty unproven. I'm not giving the benefit of the doubt that MCW belongs in a rotation for an NBA team with our playoff aspirations. I'm also not ready to say Bacon is a rotation player yet. Either way, it would be nice to have some extra insurance in case all of those situations break the wrong way.

Guessing Ilyasova would be a S&T target. Reed is a legit 2nd defensive C so I'm skeptical CHA lands him. Hill and Jones are "in case of emergency break glass" kinda guys. I'd avoid both but forced to choose I'd take Hill.

I would rank them (my preference):

1. Ersan - Cliff would love a player of his style.

2. Willie Reed - Small sample size but had some beast games when Whiteside was out hurt and wasn't bad as a backup, tbh. (I had NBALP mobile this past season so I saw him play a good bit.)

3. Hill - I think Cliff could help him like Dwight but still not my first choice.

4. TJ - He kind of seems like a left handed Marvin so no matter how much I like him he seems redundant.

It's refreshing to know we may not be done with the roster, though.

Ilyasova is coming off a somewhat sneaky decent season. Compared to Marvin, Ersan averaged more points in less minutes and on a higher percentage. Shot more threes and made them at a higher percentage and had better assist and rebounding numbers.

I'm sure Marvin is a much better defender. However, fun fact for the day... Illysova led the NBA in number of charges drawn last season.

I read that Hill was just collecting a paycheck last year and Jones has well documented issues, I'd avoid both if given the choice. I'd also assume that Ilyasova will warrant more than we're able to spend, so a S&T definitely makes sense.

Ilyasova > Mbah a Moute >>>>> Jones >> Hill for me.

I don't know much about Reed, but the Heat fan I know had good things to say about him.

Reed was in the Heat rotation pretty much all of last season, you must be confusing him with someone else.

We are up to like a 40% agreeing rate. We are getting there. It must be my new medicine.

I honestly don't get the Ilyasova interest in terms of how he fits the rotation. Cody, Dwight, Frank, and Marv are all locks for minutes barring injury. I don't see us having the PT or the $ to offer to get Ilyasova interested.

I like a TJones experiment, and would be happy with Reed and Hill.

I don't claim to know how that works but unless it's a Marv sign and trade I don't see it either. I don't see Coach Clifford agreeing to get rid of Marv anyway.

I'm a little surprised we haven't been linked to Tarik Black. We tried to claim him a couple years back when the Rockets released him, but the Lakers had priority.

He and Reed are similar but like MA said I doubt we could outbid someone for Reed, Black does some of the same things, I'd be fine with him. I'd slide him between Ersan and Hill on my list on the first page of this thread.
