Most of humanity is an employee to someone though. I think this will be a big topic of conversation going forward. Not on this exact case, just 1st amendment rights on social media in general. It should be at least, imo.

If the NBA wants to turn into pro wrestling or the MMA world, then they may allow their publicly recognizable employees to drop f bombs on social media or in interviews. Social media is media, so his comments are the same on instagram as they would be on CNN or ESPN. Privacy kind of goes away when you put your comments out there for the world to see. 1st ammendment still stands, but there are always consequences for your actions/comments.

It's because there different, Hinkie with his approach to being a GM and Embiid with his personality. NBA is an organisation that want everyone to be cut in a specific way, and if you aren't then they target you.

Nonsense. They didn't target Embiid. And they didn't fine him for just using the F-bomb. He's a star player in the league, that people follow. He said something inappropriate about the parent of another high profile player in the league. They got in between that before it got out of hand. If Westbrook said 'F' Durant's mom, and posted it on social media, he would have been wrong, and everybody would have seen that as outrageous behavior. When someone is directing something towards the family of another player, that can escalate quickly. They didn't fine him for throwing out a harmless F-bomb. They fined him because he directed it towards another players family member, it got out to the public, and they don't want something ugly playing out in front of the fans, between 2 Stars in the league.

The NBA is correct for stepping in. If the players start policing these insults themselves it will get ugly. Where I'm from, Ball is supposed to smack the ____ out of Embiid the next time he sees him. And I guarantee that's what would happen if Embiid said that about Z-Bo or Cousins' people. They stepped in before this (or something similar) got ugly.

Heh, the slope isn't all that slippery. Athletes should know that their social media feeds are basically public communications. The NBA will decide what the standard is, and they just need to be consistent in how they enforce it.

If athletes use the F word or the N word in a general sense then they should be warned. If they use it against a person then they should be fined.

Embiid was raised by his father to know that what he did was wrong, and now that the NBA drew the line, I don't expect him to do it again.

I think that level of micromanagement by the league would cause needless friction with the players and they should think long and hard about picking their battles.

Would Embiid have been fined if he said "screw Lavar Ball"?

If not, then he essentially got fined for using the F word, which in 2017 is absolutely asinine. It's not even the worst F word. The F word that disparages homosexuals is actually offensive and hurtful, yet for some reason in this country, the other F word that just means "sex" is the infamous one considered so bad that it was dubbed the "F BOMB"

Some of our social etiquette makes no sense.
