Essentially, we take on Deng and get assets (2020 1st/Nance/Hart)... We then use those assets to get Boogie.
I.E.
Wiz in: Cousins, Deng, Nance
Wiz out: Gortat, Morris, Smith, Frazier & Filler (CMC, Ochefu , etc.)
LAL in: Morris, Smith, Ajinca, Frazier, CMC
LAL out: Deng, Randle, Clarkson, Nance
NOP in: Gortat, Clarckson, Randle
NOP out: Cousins, Ajinca
*** Sweetener for NOP could easily be added by us giving away future pick, routing Hart to NOP, or sending them Sheldon Mac.
I think this has some legs.
LAL gets out of Deng's contract by giving up Randle who is about to be a FA. They get Morris at a cheap 8M and save 19M next year minimum. This summer I see them having no problem dumping Ajinca and his 1/5M contract.
They would have the following team with 2 Max roster spots...
Ball
Hart
Ingram
Morris
Zubac
NOP might be a bottom 10-12 at the deadline in the smallest market in the NBA. Im not sure what teams give anything of value for Boogie at that point. Gortat, Clarkson, and Randle are nice pieces and they dump Ajinca
Rondo / Clarkson
Jrue / Moore
Hill
Randle
AD / Gortat
We go all in with this squad and hope Deng has a nice resurgence as a backup 3/4.
Wall / Sato
Beal / Meeks / Mac
Otto / Oubre
Nance / Deng
Cousins / Mahinmi
I think the Lakers really like Nance. I'd say they would rate him above Morris (as would I) -- especially given his age & cost. The trade does get them out of Deng's way overpriced contract, but in their salary situation I don't think that contract hurts them much. Ditto Clarkson.
If they pick up all options for next year, they're at $58m/10 guys including Deng. After the proposed trade, if my quick arithmetic is anywhere near right, they'd be at a total of @$42m in salary for 11 guys. Including a bunch of guys who aren't good.
Pelicans get killed in the trade of course. Randle's looking like a bust, Clarkson has an enormous contract for what he produces, & Gortat goes into next year expiring & 34.
Even though I'm not the Cousins fan a lot of people are, there's no question this trade is good for us! We give up the about to be a 34 year old expiring Gortat & essentially nothing else of any value. For which we get Cousins, Nance & Deng. !!
At the same time, how would we handle the new salary situation the trade put us in? We send out 5 guys who make about $30m combined. We take in Deng/Nance (@$21m) and Cousins who expires this year. How do we retain Cousins?
