Pistons Sign Luis Montero to Two-Way Contract
Not 100% convinced on the source, but no reason to doubt it for now.
Interesting... bleh signing. Montero isn't really the developmental prospect in terms of age I thought the Pistons would focus on for the two spots. He wasn't exactly lighting the G-League on fire either.

Re: Pistons Sign Luis Montero to Two-Way Contract
he's got great size for a wing at 6'7 with a reported 7'1 wingspan.
he's more of a defender than anything else, you can't expect much from a 2-way signing.

It's less expecting much and more expecting somebody worth developing. Size alone doesn't really count for that in my opinion. The vast majority of two-way contract guys are going to be fodder, but this is an opportunity for NBA teams to actually utilize a minor league system. Would like to see the Pistons capitalize on that.

Re: Pistons Sign Luis Montero to Two-Way Contract
Really liked his defense in the summer league, aggressive on ball and help defense, can get hot from 3 as well, very loose handles. Probably doesn't have a high ceiling but I can see him getting some time at SF this year if Stanley continues to struggle.

Maybe the idea was not to get anyone good really. Rather someone good at defense so our guys have to improve their game in practice. I am not defending the idea, just trying to make sense of it.

I guess this is what happens when Sir Mixalot gets a job at the combine.

Practice player?
Maybe he's a really good defender and SVG wants to see if he can develop other skills?
Maybe SVG doesn't view the 2 way contracts as a chance to find a diamond?
Until SVG comments on the signing it's hard to read between the lines

Re: Pistons Sign Luis Montero to Two-Way Contract
Some guys who have been signed to two-way contracts so far for comparison:
Yakuba Ouattara (Nets)
Eric Griffin (Jazz)
Monte Morris (Nuggets)
Torrey Craig (Nuggets)
Matt Costello (Spurs)
Antonio Blakeny (Bulls)
Chris Boucher (Warriors)
Kadeem Allen (Celtics)
Alex Caruso (Lakers)
Josh Magette (Hawks)
Bronson Koenig (Bucks)
Luke Cornet (Knicks)
Jamil Wilson (Clippers)
Michael Young (Wizards)
Jalen Moore (Bucks)
Johnathan Motley (Mavericks)
Kobi Simmons (Grizzlies)
Devin Robinson (Wizards)
Malcon Miller (Raptors)
I'll be honest, of course as a Spartan fan I know Matt Costello. Also Koenig because he is from the Big 10. Aside from that I have heard of Chris Boucher (the guy who got injured for Oregon before the tournament) and people have been talking up Caruso on the Lakers based on summer league. A few may end up rising to the top. I don't expect that much from anyone who signs one of these deals, though.

Are you suggesting that we sign Gary Neal to a two-way contract?

Montero played for the Kings' summer league team in Vegas. Here's a Sac report card on him.

At the end of the day, we'll never see him, or any other 2-way signee, except at Drive games.

I'm pretty certain that the guy has to have 3 years or less of NBA experience.
We got a young wing with minimal NBA experience. Based on Montero, I'm guessing we broached the subject with Michael Gbinije
and he wasn't interested.

we're talking about a 2 way contract player. Anyone with any real upside isn't signing one of these this year. Maybe in the future, but not the 1st go round.

Exactly. Why the f*** we didn't even attempt to get LeBron, Durant, or Steph on a Two-Way Contract completely boggles the mind. BOGGLES THE MIND!
